New K&n And A Valve Check

Guys, I just checked my valves and dropped in a new K&N filter. All valves were in spec. and I buttoned things back up and dropped in a new K&N afterward.

When I started it the first time, it ran really rough at idle and had a dead spot at the bottom. It cut off a couple times, and the FI light came on. After a few times of this, it began to act a little more normal, but I was getting a lot of black smoke out the exhaust.

Is this a common cause of the K&N flowing more air than the FI is used to or did I hook a vacuum hose up wrong or something?

I would suspect you hooked up something wrong. The K@N won't cause it to smoke at all (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif) I know it woul dbe easy to connect up a wrong hose somewhere with that spagetti of hoses wires and sensors (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/pissed.gif)

I checked the rear valves yesterday and almost missed a sensor plug I had to take out for the rear valve cover to come out/in...

Matt I just thought of something else. How much oil did you use when first treating the filter and did you let it soak in for awhile? (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/unsure.gif) If you saturated the filter too much maybe its restricting airflow causing a rich mixture?

You shouldn't need to oil the K&N's, they come preoiled. Like others I would suspect a hose or plug hooked up incorrectly. Let us know if you go through and still have no luck.

Bet you got an open vac. line, somewhere. Check your map sensor.
#7
Bump. Any luck?

Be sure to call into work, tomorrow. There are more important things,... LOL.

Read your PGMFI codes, it will probably tell you the problem (my bet is map sensor vac line unplugged or maybe IAT).
#11
Almost sure of it.

What does IAT mean Jeremy?

BTW, I didnt get around to the FI problem yet, I had to do the clutch first.

I will check the codes first this afternoon. Thanks.

Intake Air Temperature. It is an easy to forget to plug in sensor on the bottom of the airbox.

Alright the verdict is in.

I managed to forget two things when hooking up the plethora of wires and hoses.

1. The two large size hoses that hug the bottom of the breather box and connect near the throttle arm.

2. The MAP vacuum line that likes to hide down below the head covers once you unhook it! (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/biggrin.gif)

I went ahead and checked the bike thoroughly with the manual to ensure all things were where they ought to be and they are now.

Bike runs like brand new again. Good thing is, I can now look under there and know exactly what everything is and where it all goes, I couldnt do that a week ago. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/smile.gif)

My idle is still a bit high, not initially on start up but after I have ridden it for a short time, so I guess a Starter Valve Synchro is needed?

I hope that you are not a Cardi-Vascular Surgeon in the real world.

Lets pay a little more attention out there. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/wink.gif)

YAY! Map and pair valve ay? Turn the idle down, is your best bet. Folks are quick to jump on a sync, but unless you're at 10,000 mi.+, I would think it isn't too far off, if at all. It is a Honda. (Electrical is more than likely gonna be a problem before most anything.) LOL. The trick is to not open a Pandora's box, while doing mods, then correcting something, not even related to what you were screwing with. LOL.
