Another Crazy Idea

I'm wondering How difficult would it be to mate a 02+ sub frame to a 98-01 frame? extensive welding? almost bolt on? what are we talking here any one want to photoshop one to see what a 98 would look like with an 02+ tail?

You will pretty much have to fit a dual under seat exhaust with it, the tail is so wide it would look really stupid without a couple of pipes to fill it in.

Time would be better spent riding and money better spent on gas, oil, tires. IMO.

I already looked at this, it would be a LOT of work, not a simple bolt-on. The attachment points for the two subframes are not even close.

And as has been mentioned, you'd be looking at fabricating an underseat exhaust to compliment it.

Seeing that I lack the knowledge of this, what purpose would it serve??

Why would you need to fab an exhaust, wouldn't a 6th gen exhaust bolt right on the 6th gen undertail? I would imagine the dual exhaust was part of the look he was looking for.

I always wanted to go the other way!
Put a 5th gen tail with a Wolf like under seat exhaust on my 6th gen and actually have some under seat storage(maybe not with the Wolf set-up)

Just kind of points out how funny we all are, doesn't it? The "tangelo" 5th gen on the front page right now proves that there's nothing wrong with the 5th gen rear end. It just needs some clean-up.

(IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/+1.gif) on it being too big a pain in the ass to swap tails. The 6th-gen-seat-to-5th-gen-tank fit alone was a big enough problem to stop me cold during the moment insanity when I actually gave this some thought.

In all honesty Its just a crazy Idea. you see I love the 5th gen engine. but I'm always looking into ways to make my bike look different. I like the 6th gen tail and the under seat exhaust would make my rear wheel swaps even quicker( i have one wheel for commuting and one for canyon riding) plus I can go to a 06 -07 rear comb. light. I've seen ZZR6 owners fab and swap 03-04 ZX6RR tails on their bikes. I'm pretty sure the two viffers(98-01 and 02+) are a lot more similiar than the kawis.

If it is what you want to do, you will find a way to get it done. I love these bikes, and anyway to make them "your own" is cool too. Take your time and do it right. Then tell us how you did it so we can do the same.

Yeah, JUST (Uh Ohhhh, I used that 4 letter word again) rip that subframe off the bike and start from scratch.

Sounds like alot of fabrication initially. One way you could approach it is to go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy some 1 inch square aluminum tubing and layout you width and length to get an initial rectangular layout, then cut cross braces where needed depending on what you need to bolt things to. It could be held together with clamps until you could mark the pieces to take to a welder to TIG weld things together. I'm trying to make it sound like it is not rocket science so that you'll start the project.....take plenty of pictures too. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif)

In san diego we can ride year round BUT, the primo part of the season has started and lasts thru july. sooooooooooo if you tore the bike apart now you can miss the whole thing! oh yeah, didn't you tell me this was your only form of transportation. not trying to dash your dreams but maybe think about learning to ride and maybe a track day? your dreams may soon change after one track day/school!!!!!

Like I said its just an Idea. If I green light this project it will start late in 08 I'm thinking fall.

I did a thread and photoshop on this very idea about a year ago I guess, but the thread was probably lost in one of the forum hijacks.

Let me search and see if I can find those pics on one of my HD;s.
