Exhaust Issue

Hi all, I Just purchased a '99 with some mods, one of which is a micron exhaust. Here's the problem on the exhaust end cap of the silencer the words "NOT FOR ROAD USE" are etched in plain sight. The bike is not loud or should I say obnoxiously loud I think it sounds beautiful music, But I'm not sure the local boys in blue will feel the same. Also since it is anout of state bike ( NJ I live in RI) I have to Have A VIN# check done by you guessed it, the local police. Your Thoughts would be Appreciated. BTW I think after the VIN# check I also have to have the Bike Inspected by a local shop/Dealer for emisions and safety, does anyone have any experience with this situation??? Can I Buy a stock pipe somewhere to temporarily get me through the bureaucratic BS??? Thanks Fred

You should be fine with your exhaust, unless you get pulled over and the cop really wants to mess with you.

I think very few (to my knowledge only Maricopa, AZ) requires emissions for motorcyles. All aftermarket exhaust systems are technically "offroad" and essentially illegal, however it is ignored in nearly all jurisdictions. Take the bike to State/county testing and you very likely will have no issues.

I don't know exactly what the law is for ME/NH but I think they can measure the noise level if they really want to be pricks. This is probably very rare and would only happen if you were caught doing something else. ( (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/squid.gif) )

There are always stock pipes for sale on eBay. Rather than going back to stock, a lot of VFR owners use Staintune aftermarket exhaust. These have a removable 'spud' that gives you the option of a louder / less restrictive performance exhuast and near-stock quiet with the 'spud' installed. It is a pricey alternative but a great improvement over stock.

If you are really worried about it, I'll trade my stocker for your Micron (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif) but that would probably be taking advantage of you.

Hey guys, Just getting back on the pipe situation. I took it to vin check and they never even looked at the bike nevermind the pipe, and the dealer doing the inspection thought it sounded great. All set, guess I worried for nothing.
