Lack Of Power....need Help

Gentlemen,

I owned a '98 and I currently own a 2003 VFR. A buddy of mine just bought a 2000 VFR. It supposedly has been "assmebled from multiple bikes but everything looks like it's where it is supposed to be. I have ridden it several times. It handles great, starts up immediately when you hit the switch, idles silky smooth, does not smoke, etc. etc. . The only problem with it is that it does not seem to make much power, especially in the lower rev. range. It just feels lethargic. It does OK in the upper rev. range although not what it should be doing....it pulls pretty good between 6K and 10K. It's really weak in the lower revs. though. Like I said....otherwise it runs great. Any common problems that would account for this? Today we will be changing the oil, checking the air and fuel filters.

I would have a little look at the timing if motor has been apart.

I don't think the motor has been apart. Is the timing adjustable?

Adjustable in the fact if you pull cams out & install one with one tooth out you can have your sort of problems.

Does it also have the correct ECU seeing it's a bits from here & there bike.

Well....I have NO idea.

If you back off the throttle quick under load does it give any indication of backfireing either out the exhaust or into the intake? I would also check the plugs and wires, it could be that the plugs are loaded up and you are not getting complete combustion. Normally you will know if the timing is off a notch, and if it runs smooth that is a pretty good indiction that its on. Do the wheels spin freely when its on the center stand, i.e. is there any excess drag in the trans or brakes?

We plan to ride tomorrow so I will check for freeplay. I thought about the plugs too and will check those soon. I'm just surprised that it fires up so quickly and idles so smoothly if it has bad plugs. It does NOT backfire at all when you back off the throttle. It did seem to be running pretty hot the last time we rode together.
