Most likely clutch. Can you help with a little more information - what year and how many miles? Has the bike sat for a long time by any chance? Did you or someone recently do a fluid change on the clutch? Have you tried to bleed the clutch slave cylinder?
It sounds like the clutch is dragging for some reason. To check, to put the bike on the center stand then with the engine off put it in gear, pull in the clutch and see if you can easily rotate the rear wheel. If not, check the fluid level, try to bleed the system. If this doesn't work you may need to check the condition of the clutch mastercylinder and finally the clutch pack itself.

The bike was registered in 2000 and has 16,00 miles. Yes the bike has stood for sometime. I haven't tried any fluid changes or bleeding.
I could be way off base here but I would try running some full synthetic oil ummmm Mobil 15 50 comes to mind (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif) Bleed the clutch line and go from there (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif) Keep us posted on your results too (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/unsure.gif)
if the bike hasn't had an oil change in a while, i would ride for a few hours and do an oil change and filter. probably just sticky clutch plates and some good exercise with fix the problem........or not! if it grinds every time, try second gear first to mesh the gears and then shift down. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif)
Err, instead of riding for a few hours, I would warm it up to normal op temp and then change out all the fluids. Dont ride it until its got new oil + filter at least.
I think you could have air bubbles in your clutch line. The air is compressing when you disengage the clutch resulting in maybe not a full throw from the clutch center pushrod, thus the clutch might still be slightly dragging causing the grinding when you engage first gear. There should be no grinding when you engage first gear with a fully disengaged clutch. A good fluid change and bleeding could fix it Alos check that your clutch master cylinder is in good nick. a leaking master cylinder (bad piston seals and/or corroded bore) could also cause the problem you are experiencing. Do it soon before you damage your transmission gears.
