Oil Filter Question

Need help again as I come up to speed owning a Viffer again.

Went to the local Honda dealer (that I trust as far as I could throw) and bought a new filter.  When I got home and compared it to the filter on the VFR (oil last changed in Oct), the filters are a little different.

The filter the dealer gave me is: 15410-MFJ-D01.  I have no idea what's on the bike now (bought used), no p/n, but it's Honda OEM and it's longer than the new one I have.

Searching the interwebs for this p/n I find no reference to the VFR.

Any gurus know if this filter will work?  Is it a common filter used by multiple Honda models?

Thanks.  :thumbsup:

I'm hoping this may be helpful in some way:

I run Purolator Pure One filters on my 6th Gen. There are two filters that work. One is PL14612 which is the same length as the Honda filter that came on the bike and the other is PL14610 (the one I use) which is about 1 - 1 1/2 inches longer at 3 1/2 inches total length (just put a tape on one as I have it handy). I use the longer one as I ASSume that it flows better due to the increased filtration area and have been using these for all of my oil changes.

Shameless plug time: I'm hoping that you might try and make it down to Vancouver, WA for the 2007 PNW VFRD Rich Merrill Memorial Meet this year. It's gonna be a good 'un.

I've been using these since day one, and Mr. VFR just burps once and keeps on truckin'.

>12 bucks each.  Can't go wrong, IMHO.

sirimiri,

okay, the 15410-MFJ-D01 I have is supposed to be a replacement for the 15410-MCJ-003 that you're holding.  I'm probably good to go.

I wonder why Honda feels the need to have 15 million different oil filter part numbers?   :goofy:

as was stated above, there are probably a few different size filters that will still fit the bike. i prefer the bigger filters as they will maintain better flow rates and better filtering capabilities as the oil gets older.

I run the Purolator, myself.  Can't remember which size I went with, but there was a good website out there that describes the different aftermarket filters, and this one seemed like one of the better ones.  Don't remember the website, either.  You can just ignore this post, and all my future posts for that matter, since I apparently can't remember anything.

Purolator PureOne Filter, #14610 (3.5") or #14612 (2.5").

EDIT:  I found the website: http://www.calsci.co...FilterXRef.html for the cross reference numbers;  http://www.calsci.co...html#OilFilters for a summary of oil filters;

I bought a new filter last week and was told that 15410-MFJ-D01 is the "new" part number that supercedes 15410-MCJ-003. Dunno why they keep changing numbers.

Honda Oil Filter is a waste of $, the dealer service jock has warnered me only to use a "Honda filter because.....blah blah blah" Yeah, right, and they recommend changing the oil every 7500 miles!? Like that's a great P/M schedule.

I've run the Puralator in the past, the easiest to get my hands on is the Fram PH6604 ($6 at Pep Boys), it does cross reference to the Honda part number, and the oil/filter changes are every 4000miles. Seems to be working really well - I use Mobil1 15W50 but that thread has been done to death several times too many.

The 15410-MFJ-D01 was a new number that came out for the '07 RR models.

Honda then issued a notice stating that the 15410-MFJ-D01 will now supercede the previous 15410-MM9-013 and 15410-MCJ-003.

So there you have it.

I do have one question though...why is it that some people have such a rabid attitude against using factory parts?

Like this comment........."Honda Oil Filter is a waste of $, the dealer service jock has warnered me only to use a "Honda filter because.....blah blah blah""

Jeez relax man. You like this Honda motorcycle so much yet you hate the parts on it? It may cost a tad more for the Honda filter but calling it a waste of money is a bit of a stretch dontcha think? For a few bucks more you get guaranteed fitment AND it actually filters the oil.
#11
Personally I've never understood the concept of buying a 10k dollar motorcycle and then using nonOEM parts, especially the oil filter.  I figure Honda has a substantial interest in manufacturing or outsourcing the best product for your bike, JMO.
#12
I've just never really understood period. Futhermore; I'm quite rabid about it.........

understanding, that is.   :unsure:

the 07 models are requiring 10w30 oil I thought, this may be the filter may have different flow characteritics?

Interestingly (or perhaps not), the Honda dealers here don't usually fit or supply "genuine" Honda filters, but Vesrah or other aftermarket brands that are practically identical, but easier to obtain and lower-priced.

Really good point, especially considering its only a waste of about $10 AT MOST to go OEM for the oil filter.  That said, I do have a Purolator oil (the website comparison seems relatively scientific) and K&N air filter (everybody's doing it??) in my bike.  And Targa F4i upper fairing.  And Two Bros exhaust.  Galfer SS brake/clutch lines will go on sometime this year.  Factory Pro shift kit and star install either this or next year.  Racetech gold valve fork emulator and springs......

I apologize for upsetting you, and after relaxing a bit Joe, I believe I've come up with a non-rabid response. Please keep in mind my intent is not to start a long ranting thread or exchange of flames:

I have a rabid aversion to paying someone's uneeded overhead expense everytime I walk through the front door. I do most all of the service myself, save the V-tec valve adjust as my wrecked back just can't take being hunched over all day. With the amount of miles I log, that's two or three valve services annually at $750 or so per, so I think I do my share of supporting the local Honda Shop. The only beef I have is that the mechanic doesn't receive a bigger piece of the bill - refer back to the previous comment about overhead expense.

As for the filters, and in consideration of a competitive market, I'll bet you a box of Bacon that all the brands are pumped from the same factories somewhere in China and I have trouble justifying double the cost for a Honda part number. I do not have a problem with buying filters of Chinese origin, lest someone else get offended at my comments.

As for the OEM parts that can't be sourced elsewhere for a better price (like Service Honda)- I've got the service manual and I don't hesitate to head for the dealer when necessary, and I don't complain when I get there. But $3.98 each for the lower fairing clips (those 'designed to fail' push connectors that break every time they're romoved) is bit lame when you have to romove four of them to change the oil. Solution? Buy a better product that screws in rather than pushes, is an exact fit, had on-line for $9.95/100 pieces. There's that competitive market thingy again....

BTW - where did you hear that the Fram filters don't filter oil as well as any other brand, Honda or otherwise? I'd be interested in reading that piece of research, I'm certain others would as well.

It is this kind of response that is designed to incite an argument. "I'd be interested in reading that piece of research, I'm certain others would as well." OMG please.

If you will kindly read what I said you will see that I never said any other product DIDN'T do the job. Nor did I give the impression that I was upset.

I just find it odd that some of you very strongly disapprove of using certain critical parts designed and made to fit your motorcycle. I can see when availability is a concern. But to save a couple dollars?

When I said this "For a few bucks more you get guaranteed fitment AND it actually filters the oil." I meant that you pay a couple dollars more and the product does the job it was designed to do, on the vehicle for which it was designed with zero percent chance of improper fitment.

I'm just curious about the mindset of being dead set against the factory part when, all things being equal, the one benefit is a savings of a couple dollars and the major detriment is a POSSIBILITY of non-compliance with factory specs which COULD effect the long term effectiveness of your engine.

I am all for doing it better than the factory when the benefits are many and there are no side effects. The clips are a good example. Great product, no worries. Stainless brake lines, tires, suspension and so on and so on.

I'm not saying don't do it, cuz you wouldn't care what I said anyway, I just found it odd that you were SOOO dead set against a Honda oil filter.

Just assuming that the oem filter is good or the best because it is made by the bike manufacturer is flawed. does it work? i'm sure it does. does it do a good job? i'm sure it does.

if you don't believe me, get a UOA on your bike wqith brand "A" filter and then with brand "B" filter.

there are differences. don't just settle for oem because it is sold with the Honda logo on it.

having said all that, I don't know what filters are better than others in the bike world. i can tell you in the caged world that K&N oil filters are perhaps the best money can buy. (unlike their air filters)

I've thought about buying the 110 reuseable micro-mesh filter....but I did the math and it didn't pan out...

As to the OEM vs. non-OEM argument....each piece is different.  Sometimes the manufacturer will chose a less expensive part, that is not as perceptible to the consumer, whereas the aftermarket replacement is in a whole other league. Or conversely, they sink a lot of effort into a certain setup (witness the BMW E36 series rear Z-link suspension) because costs aside, they believe it's worth it.

My bike came with an OEM filter, and American Honda warranteed the VFR for a year.  I slab/commute/occasionally get twisty.  The OEM filter is good enough for me :-)

For what it's worth. I just bought a filter from the dealer last week for my '06.  He asked me which bike it's for, and then he came back like 5 seconds later with the filter.  I was puzzled why he didn't seem to need to look up the part# for the filter, and he replied that Honda is going to a single filter for all it's bikes and "this is it".  Meanwhile, neither of the 2 local dealers sells the "cap wrench" oil filter attachment so you can loosen/tighten the filter with a socket wrench.  I found out the hard way that it's very difficult without that!
#21
What!? We're supposed to change the filter too?   :rolleyes:

I didn't say the OEM filtered better nor did I say I assumed it was better because of that. I said that I'd rather pay a couple more dollars for surety of fitment. Honda has spent countless developement hours with these filters attached to their engines. So I KNOW they fit and work properly. I highly doubt Purolator tested each filter for thousands of hours on a VFR, GSXR etc etc.

I'm just saying I'll pay a couple bucks for peace of mind because I know Honda makes sure that filter fits perfectly.

They have actually discontinued 2 filters, the MM9 and the MCJ in return we have the MFJ

The extra filter I got when I bought the bike says "15410-mm9-013"   Hope it works cuase I just drained my oil.

Ahhh, oil filter thread!
  (yea, I'm bored.)

I use a Wix (NAPA) 1356 filter.  I'd use it even if it cost more than Honda's.

There is nothing bad, nor special about Honda's filter.  Not made by Honda, just some vendor;  seen the same thing on Kawasaki lawnmower engines with a different paint job.

Once I cut open Fram, Purolator, Wix, Bosch, & OEM just out of curiosity.  Wix' design appeared superior.  Clearly it cost the most to manufacture.

Better design & I can get it at any nearby NAPA or CarQuest on a Saturday morning.
The fact it cost half what the Honda dealer charges after adding his gouge is just icing on the cake! :salesman:

For those who give two turds:
    Fram filter was cheaply made.  Plastic and cardboard.
    Purolator had the most filter area; but at a cost.  Bypass valve design was minimalistic and kind of cheesy.
    Bosch, STP, WalMart, & more -all come out of the same plant.

Will the longest Purolator PureOne (3.5") filter fit behind the header? I'm looking at ordering a few filters, tired of buying the Honda stuff for 3 times the price..

Regards,
Bruckner

For that same $12 you could own 3-4 filters of better quality then the Honda brand. I'm using the WalMart SuperTech ST7317,
   about $2. Made by Champion.  See info below:

Recommended filters.
All have superior
filtering.
Buy these filters
About 2.5 inches long.
    * Purolator Pure One PL14612, about $6.
    * Mobil M1-108, about $12.
      Made by Champion.
    * Bosch 3300, about $6.
      Made by Champion.
About 3.25 inches long.
    * Purolator Pure One PL14610, about $6.
    * Mobil 1 M1-110, about $10.
      Made by Champion.
    * Bosch 3323, about $6.
      Made By Champion.
    * WalMart SuperTech ST7317,
      about $2. Made by Champion.

Motorcycle Filters.
None are recommended.
    * AC Delco PF2135
    * AMSOil SMF103
    * Carquest 85358
    * FRAM PH6017A
    * Honda 15410-MCJ-000
    * K&N KN-204, about $13. Metric nut on end for easy removal.
    * NAPA Gold 1358
    * Purolator ML16817. Imported, not made by Purolator.
    * STP SMO 17
    * WIX 51358

BTW if you change the oil ofter enough any oil will do, BUT our old Oil Expert (20 plus years of testing oils) shared that the Honda branded oils consistently tested on the bottom end of durability against all other Dino's. :o
