What Is The Best Stock Color On A 5th Gen Vfr?

We just bought our first bike to start off our motorcycle "reconditioning" buisness... a 1998 VFR with 10k miles for $900! It's a theft recovery with a clear title and a lot of needed bodywork. She's a little ruff around the edges, but I think she will clean up very nicely. The biggest problem we are having right now is deciding what color to repaint it for maximum resale value. We we're going to just redo the standard red but got hung up on how awesome the yellow VFR's look. So now I'm taking it to my trusted team of professionals (VFRD members) to help us decide. Here's a pic of of the mangled beast...

After seeing Silver788's freshly repainted 5th gen in white, I'm going to have to say white, even though it's not a stock color.

I believe the only stock colors the 5th gen came in was Italian Red, Accurate Silver Metallic (Canada & Europe), Lapis Blue (Canada), Pearl Conifer Green (Canada & Europe), Pearl Shining Yellow, Pearl Cosmic Black (Europe), Pearl Prism Black (Europe), Sparkling Silver Metallic (Europe), and Candy Tahitian Blue (Europe).

Not sure about Australian colors though. unsure.gif

i wasn't sure whether or not white was a stock color... but i sure wish it was! wink.gif

I have a yellow Y2K, which I love. However the Blue version from Canada is a sharp (and kind of rare) color.

Even though some colors rock (like yellow) if you are looking for resale value you may want to paint it a color that would give you the largest possible market (like red). Speaking of rock... will the side stand support be sold with the bike?

With my vote for yellow as the best looking "stock" color, the Canadian Blue was a great looking color.

But, from the standpoint of resale, the car guys always vote for "Resale Red".

If your wanting highest resale of a stock 98 you only have Red to choose from! The 00 was Yellow, so in the US you had Red or Yellow(00 only). If you paint it any other color it will not be factory.
Now the best looking factory 5th gens are the Silver or blue Canadian Models IMO. fing02.gif

You used to be able to get a full set for Dynomohumm in CN for around $1500 including tank.

It's a tossup in my eyes between yellow (only yellow bike I like!) and blue. That blue is HOT, though.

Yellow is great, BUT, A european color may fetch you more. Not a lot of blue ones, in the states.

AFAIK, white was never offered on the 5th gens in any market.

Yellow (IMO) is the sweetest stock color.

But if you have an opportunity to paint it, I recommend trying to do something classy and unique to make it stand out from the crowd a bit.

Ultimately, your concern is to get it sold.
If you were selling it as a private individual, custom paint would be less of an issue.
As a business, however, it's a different story.
Even with the knowledge that it has been "reconditioned", potential buyers might see non-stock color as a red flag (pun not intended).

I liked the CDN blue the best. There was a photo of an orange VFR, not a factory color but it sure was perty.

The red ones are fasterer.

I would say blue (the Candy Tahitian Blue) as it (and the Satantune) is the reason I bought my bike, rather than the red or purplish (what the hell colour IS that?!?) 02/03 Vtec, but there's a really nice metallic British Racing Green (dunno what its official name is) that the 4th generation came in in some markets. I was thinking about repainting my bike in that, the next time it falls down.
Of course, the WifeAccountantPorcupinePillionist would complain vigorously. blink.gif Or mebbe not; she says the VifFerraRi is not OUR bike anymore, due to the unauthorised farkling I've done. 491.gif

I voted yellow, because I'm biased.
Every time I see a picture of a blue one, though, I think Honda should have imported them to the U.S. market.

The 5th Gen (Klingon) came in Red, Yellow, Blue, Silver, Dark Green, Black - Oz did not get the green or black though.
Japan has/had some White cop bikes.

If I was respraying mine I'd go the black, if I was spraying one to sell I'd go with stock for that year. The Yellow is very hard to colormatch, Red may be easier for you.

I think ALL the colours are not as simple to colour-match as you'd think. I recently tried to get some paint to cover the DumboEarBlankingPlates, and the automotive paint shop gave up. They were trying to provide me with a one-pot solution for what is a two-pot paint job. The first coat is a dark one, with metallic blue and black, while the second is metallic blue with a purplish colour added.
There's nothing to stop you painting the bike with some common (but pretty) car paint, of a non-Honda colour. Someone on here used a Mazda blue (very similar to the Candy Tahitian Blue) because they had a car the same colour. All you'd have to do then is replace the sticker under the seat with a new one saying what the colour code for the paint was. I was going to touch up my recent scrapes (post de-DumboEaring) with something like a Mazda or Ford blue, but all the auto parts stores here didn't have anything remotely close, and I couldn't be bothered going to a Ford/Mazda dealer and trying to explain what I wanted.
So I used the China Blue touchup paint for my wife's Peugeot.
Perfect match!

Why not consider an original color that nobody has tried on a VFR yet. I've never seen one in a nice champagne or goldish color. I bet that would look really classy on a 5th gen.

DAMN, that is a pretty blue. If you powdercoated the wheels white I'd probably go crazy; that would look so sweet...

This 00 looking at me in the showroom stole my attention and months of payments when I found it in 04 with 6000 kms on the odometer.

The yellow VFR looks great with matching yellow wheels. Seen several blue ones, never been too impressed. The green we got was nearly black. The silver looks great, but kinda boring after awhile. Black VFR's are pretty rare, and you can get the Euro VFR 5th gen decals with the gold background...

OEM will likely bring the most $$$ as long as you do it right - that means whatever you do don't try to get fancy making your own decals for it. Keep It Simple Stupid.

I had the black with gold decals until about a year back. Again, the colour's a difficult one to match because there's a very subtle metallic element to it; it's not just gloss black. Honda had a real problem getting the right shades of gold decals for it too, I bought a pair of wings for the tank when it had a little drop, and the left and right were slightly different shades. It took about 4 goes for them to get it right, although that could've been my local dealer who are pretty inept at times... here's it showing of it's gold stickers:

Sorry, don't mean to do a thread jack, but I really like that color of grey, do you remember which vehicle and year that it was originally on?

If resale is your prime concern then Red should be your choice, will your project bike carry a salvage title? If it does then you can consider other options. I have a yellow Y2K which I bought because it was not red, not that I do not like red, it is just that almost every VFR in the US is red. When I got my bike I was going to have a friend of mine change the color to a Cadillac color, it is called White Diamond, a pearl white, he quoted me $800 to do this and then he talked me out of it. He said that the yellow looked really good with the pearl, and that if I should have any damage to the bike then I could change it then, so far it stays yellow.

I've had mine white for about 4 years. Just recently I offered it to a friend and included a paint job because of some damage I did in my garage. Much to my suprise, he wanted it white again!

Here's what she looked like after a respray... cleared over the tank decals, but the rest of the stickers I gave to him to decide what he wanted:

After much pondering, (It was mentioned, by many), the best stock color, IS in fact, the color the bike came in.

I like Kevin's graphite bike, but yellow is still the best STOCK/OEM color.
