Hi everyone, I don't want to start any debates here but I've basically got a 6th gen vfr and I loved it when I first got it and I still do BUT... it's only when you've spent at least 3 months with the vtec that you start wondering .. put it this way, not ONE ride have I not forgot about the change over at 7k, I'm also constantly aware of it and that's not good right? I'm thinking of going back to a 5th gen for this sole reason. I'm not really sure which year is the best one? I'm thinking I might get a part ex on maybe a yellow, blue or black one.

I'm going to test ride this one tomorrow... http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikesfor...p;mfy=15.008780

What you think? My current ride is as stated on my profile pic.

Do whatever makes you happy. If you want to try something else, go for it. The 5th gens are great bikes.

I would opt for a 98-99 model if I had the option. No catalytic converter (more power), and a fast idle lever instead of the failure prone wax unit.

Which is better? A brunette? A redhead? Prove it!

There is no "better".

There is only personal preference.

Buy the one YOU like better.

hey I did that already.. smile.gif went from a 05 to a 00.. But I never once had a problem with the vtech thing..never thought about it, long as it went when i punched it..and they both went

I only did it because I had sold the 05 when i had my brain malfunction and bought that #%$^ camel thing!

I needed a bike quickly for a trip, and the 00 was available, and cheap. So I grabbed it.Now that i have the 00 and have 1/3 the $$ tied up in it and realize it works almost the same as the 05, I am happy with it.

They are both cool bikes, but I certainly wouldnt have gone back to the 00 otherwise..

One thing I will say tho..I will take a old vfr of any year any day over most of the new bikes i have ridden, (and owned), non vtech, vtech...whatever!! Id even ride a YELLOW one!! smile.gif

Lets see what you find out??

Interesting point of view. I think alot of it is because of the way it gets power below 7k.. it feels very calculated on mine and sometimes you can feel the bike trying to be clever in it's attempt to get better fuel economy.. I'm expecting the engine on the 99 vfr tomorrow will feel more livelier and better sounding, not to mention the fact that I spend a lot of time around 5-8k and it would be nice not to think of that very small margin between the kick where the bike just coughs somewhere around 6800, it doesn't always do it... but it's common particularly in 6th gear when your gradually moving up to 100mph .. it doesn't like it unless you power though the surge point... yuk don't like that at all!!

Let us know about your impressions...
I expect that you might notice a bit less grunt under 5k... The 6th gen has more. Not that the 5th gen is weak down there, its normal - just the vtec helps boost it in the newer model. Not an issue really, just noticeable back-to-back.
Anyway, post up your thoughts.

I've had my 98 5th gen bike since 99. Tried a couple of the 6th gen bikes before. I felt right at home.
Any year is good as long as the bike is in good shape. More recent does have some advantages.
Probably less mileage, less aging to rubber bits, paint, plastic, etc. fing02.gif

98 has catless headers. Thats a plus. I too am not a "vTek" fan. but again your not starting that debate.

Not sure how your used bike valuations run, but translated to USD, they're asking $6300 for it. (3,100)

According to KBB.com, the valuation of a 2000 VFR should be about $5280 USD or 2,595.

(Oh wait, I assumed it was a 2000 by the colour, but it's a 1999, should be even less that I stated then.)

$4915 or 2,415.48 for a 1999 model then

Again, I have no idea how the UK market valuations compare to the market over here, perhaps you could shed some light for us?

Are bikes more expensive across the board there, be it new/used/whatever?

I've got both and it makes absolutely no difference to me which one I ride.

One is as fast as the other, though the '99 comes with one more tooth in the rear sproket and turns a few more rpm's at a given speed. Theoretically, it should accelerate a little better but I can't tell any difference.

VTEC doesn't bother me at all whether it engages in the middle of a tight turn or anywhere else. Two things help a VTEC bike....run the snot out of it and the VTEC will smooth out and learn to have a smooth throttle hand (should have one anyway).

I like both generations... fing02.gif

I test-rode a 5th and 6th gen back-to-back before buying the 5th gen. I really liked the 6th gen (although I wasn't absolutely sure about the looks) but the thing that really put me off the 6th gen was the VTec. On the bike I rode (an '02, IIRC) , the VTec didn't always function properly, and it didn't add anything to the experience. In fact, it really detracted from it, due to the added noise and inconsistency.

Having said that, I have sometimes wondered if I made the right decision, as I could've had a newer bike, with better instruments and more 'modern' looks, better suspension and handling, etc. On the other hand, I HATE Honda camchains/CCTs.
On the other other hand, the gear-drive whine of the '01 took me 18 to 24 months to get used to. There were times it drove me nuts, being SO much louder than the VFR750 I used to own.
On the other OTHER other other hand (man, I feel like an octopus), it's hard to see the speed I'm going with the graduations on the analogue speedo being so small...

Like everyone else has said, because riding a bike is a very visceral thing (it's all about feel), it's VERY subjective. You can't really ask people what they think; it's fine to gather as much info as you can to make an informed decision, but in the final analysis, it's what does it for you that matters.
On the other other OTHER hand, one of the things my wife liked about the VTec is she could see what speed I was doing by looking over my shoulder.

I have never seen dyno numbers to back this up. I think the difference in feel is probably due to how Honda re-geared the 6th gen to not feel slower than the 5th gen.

After riding a 5th and 6th on vacation over 2 weeks, I came home and went shopping for the 5th gen, I just could not stand the vtec. The bump in torque if you were right in a corner just drove me nuts. The 6th does have better suspension, so I figured to just grab a 5th gen and modify it to my liking - up the suspension, delink the brakes, air filter/slip on and power commander. (See my gallery if you want)

- If you grab a 5th the suspension upgrade is almost a given, but the motor ROCKS, smooth throttle response bottom to top. Gear whine? I dont hear it over the slip on, so it not an issue.

- I alway thought the ultimate viffer would be a 6th frame and a 5th motor, throw in Ohlins forks on the front.

I don't think I will be buying this one as like you say it's pretty - (&) expensive for a mid-mileage 99 but it is coming from a Honda dealer so it's what I expected... it is however a handy opportunity to make them think I'm interested so I can take her out for a spin ... although I've woke up today and gone to work in pissing down rain - my vtec cut out twice nearly making me lose grip entirely (another subject). I would say the market is the same over here for buying used bikes.

'Ride' mag reckon you would pay up to 3750 for a int 2001 here in the UK.

I have noticed when my viffer behaves that the vtec is alot smoother these days now that I've ragged the shit out of it;)... but it's in top gear, 5th gear and every now and then it jjolts, when creeping up to the changeover the bike chokes for a second... after a while it does start to drive you insane and you get fixated and paranoid about it, esp in the wet.
