In case any of you fifth generation riders are wondering, your bike should be perfectly happy spending 10 minutes pinned to the stop in 6th gear while you tear ass flat out cross Death Valley. Just keep you chin on the tank - sitting up to check out the scenery at a buck-twenty plus makes the ride a bit more rough.

Not that I would do something like that. I'm just sayin' ... biggrin.gif

Also, when the straight does finally end and you have to slow down, don't be surprised if you've applied the theory of special relativity to your dash clock.

Ps. My four day run from Oakland to Death Valley and back was insane, one of the best experiences of my entire life. Pictures and full report to follow. It's a long story, but the bastids I were riding with set my dash clock back 3 hours while I was using the rest room. Needless to say, the estimate I gave my wife about what time of day I would arrive back home was a bit off. laugh.gif

I hear you about the fuel. We were running with a couple of guys on 996 Superhawks, which have a gas tank the size of a cup of espresso, so I had plenty of opportunity to gas up.

Driving to work today, I took the car and went the posted limit. :yawn: Anyone ready to plan a trip to desert?

Is this true? A full tank in 30 minutes doing 150 mph is about 75 miles per full tank of about 5 gallons gives 15mpg.

Granted you're talking about a 1st gen, but I wonder what maximum fuel consumption is on a 5th or 6th gen. Any volunteers? goofy.gif

Yup, 33 minutes at WFO in 6th gear was the magic number in the 1986 VFR 24 hour speed record. Anything after that, you're flirting with an empty tank.

New 800 VFRs would be no different, Fi or not. You're punching a big hole in the air at 155 MPH and 11,500 RPM, eating fuel like there's no tomorrow.

The Panamint Valley is one cool place to do yur high speed runs; was that the one you were in?

I was humbled there a few years ago as I was do'n 135 mph+ for a long run and was think'n just how fast an SOB I was and then an F16 came over me from behind not more that 50 to 100 feet over my head. The noise was deafening and his speed made me look like I was stopped, he dipped both his wings to me after he passed before he ascended slightly and banked hard left and came around behind me for a second pass.

My understanding is they practice their bombing runs on moving vehicles in the desolated valleys in the Mojave. Two guys I know, the same weekend, had their radar detectors go off for no apparent reason , then seconds later a fighter jet went into a total vertical climb just above them. The assumption was the radar detectors went off after the jet acquired them with "Tone Lock" then went vertical as if climbing after a simulated firing.

As for be�n a squid: I will admit to peg�n the speedo on almost every bike I have ever owned. However, I save those speed excesses for when I�m out on the deserted two lane roads of the desert. You can see for ten miles in each direction and if any car is visible I abort the run. I figure the most I�m gonna kill if something goes wrong is me and some desert critter (non-human) that gets in my way

Well, if I really did pin the tach in 6th for an extended period of time, Panamint *might* have been one of the places on the trip where that happened ;D But if THE MAN is reading this, I have no association with those maniacs, I swear!

I didn't bother doing the MPG math because I didn't want to know, but can say just by judging the trip odometer against the fuel gauge that I wasn't getting 40mph any more.

The jet fighter stories are sweet. Nothing like that happened on my pass. I never pull stunts like that unless it's the middle of nowhere - though there's a couple of long on-ramps around here where I've seen how far around you can get on the 'busa speedo before you have to merge. goofy.gif

That's not so bad fuel consumption wise. According to a story in the Times today, the Space Shuttle burns the equivalent of a swimming pool of fuel in 23 seconds.

I have only been able to hold it at flat out the one day I did a track day at Daytona. Let me tell you, that is a trip. I was on the RC51 and the scariest thing was coming off the banking onto the straights and the g-force pulling you out right up to that big white concrete wall !!! >gulp<
My buddy and I got accurate speeds of 162 mph coming onto the front straight ohmy.gif
That track is made for cars; its way too bumpy to enjoy going that fast on a bike. My eyes were bouncing around so bad the track was out of focus most of the time around the banking. wacko.gif
