Question - Wax Unit

I read somewhere (not on this board) about the "wax unit" that controls cold idle rpm on the 2000 & 2001 models (wish they had just stayed with the lever that was on the '99). Anyone happen to have a picture or description of where it is and what the part# might be?

it is located under the throttle body in between the heads. I had to take mine apart and clean it up a few years ago during a thermostat replacement. it had become stuck in place. after i cleaned it up and made it moved freely i have had no problems with it.

If I've got the Wax Unit identified correctly, it's part# 18 in the following:

HS, when I clicked on your VFRD link then clicked on the '98-01 title, it came up with the forth generation parts list.

The Wax Unit Looks like a bear to get to. Luckily mine is not malfunctioning.

I'm considering keeping my 5th gen (as well as my '01 ST1100) for another 5 or 6 years. Plenty of time for Gremlins to raise their ugly heads. I like to be prepared for potential problems ahead of time so that is why I'm asking about this.

Pat (pgreen) nailed it. I ordered a new wax unit for my y2k and once i disassembled the housing i found the problem was the outlet side of the housing was bunged up. A simple cleaning was all that was needed on the housing. If your not riding the bike daily it might be worth your while to get to the wax unit housing and have a look, it may just be gummed up like mine was. fing02.gif

I'm not really having any problem with my idle speed right now. I've just read about it several times on the VFR Email List. Just trying to gain knowledge about any potential problems before they occur.

Below is a PM from Gary concerning repair/replacement of the Wax Unit. I thought it would be good info to document in the public forum. Not having to remove the throttle bodies is a good thing:


"The wax unit can be reached without removing the throttle bodies. I thought otherwise until i got into it. Like i said in my post, check your wax unit housing for gummed up ports. It might be a easy as just cleaning them. You do have to remove the airbox completely with the 4 vac hoses but really no biggie."
