What Color To Paint?

Well I think over Christmas break I am going to repair all of my plastics and have my bike painted. I can't decide what color. I like my options of metal flake black, flat black, red, white, or gray. I think I would only consider the metal flake black, white, or red if I go with one color. I may be willing to incorporate other colors into the scheme if I do something with multiple colors. A friend who owns a body shop is doing the painting for free so I don't want to get too fancy, I'm looking for something that is both classy and tasteful, yet different.

I know you say you don't want to get too fancy, but I was thinking a metal flake black, with some almost hidden ghost flames (or other cool icon) would be cool. Make the flames so hidden that you really have to try to see them...kind of like from a distance the flames wouldn't be flames...they would just be making the black a little different shade...I hope that makes sense...

If your going to keep the same pattern, 2007 dark red with black wings, or go back to your white, that looks pretty sweet :thumbsup:

I have not seen any white 4th Gens, I think it may look sharp. Any photoshoppers bored today?

I have always liked the dark blue best until I saw Toro's Lambo orange 5th gen. The white does look damn good w/ the white wheels tho. As for the pink one, it takes a real man to ride a pink bike.

Have you seen the '98 Lincoln Mark VIII cream? Beautiful color. Should be easy to find, and cost efficient, too. The Tri-stage pearl white LE is sweet, too.

I agree Trav, I think that white looks classy. I personally don't care much for the pearl though.

Plain white is great. The nice thing is, if you want to ghost it later, you can. If you want to add a splash of color, you can always add a pinstripe or 2, or cut vinyl accents, easily and inexpensively.

Here is my monthly plea:

We should have a sticky with a gallery of all the VFRs that are painted in a color other than the stock color for that model year!

Saw this on another VFR forum and thought if i ever paint one it will be an RC30 paint scheem as well,i love those colours

While you asked, heres my opinion. Take the blue from the anniversary 07 and paint yours that blue but all over (I really like that blue and thats what I would do if I won the lottery, or had a friend like yours). :thumbsup:

I have 10 years of auto body painting under my belt and I will tell you a cool trick to add to your color if you would like,

This works best if your paint job is not to color complex, I would say use this if you do not use more than 2 colors.

Lets take the Black and red paint job that was shown above. Once you have sprayed the base for both the red and black (assuming that thease colors are just straight, no pearls or flake. Let the paint dry over night to make sure that you have a 100% chemical reaction. when you mix up your clear coat dump a whole bunch of pearl into the clear coat before coating. with using the red and black paint job I would use red pearl since it is a nice flop color for the majority of a black bike. Do not be afraid to add a lot of pearl the more you add the better the end effect. Just make sure to note the amount in case of a need to re coat or repaint in the future. Once you have put about 3 coats of the clear with red pearl let totally dry, then take your bike out at night. Pearls are most sensitive to street lights. During the day your bike will look just like a black and red paint job, but at night when you pass under a street light you bike will flop to red as it passes under the light and people will not be able to see the black on the bike! Just an Idea, I did this to my last truck it was awesome!

Now if you really want a total custom paint job look at www.alsacorp.com they have some ground breaking paint, I also have a business contract with them so I can get you 5% of your total price sent back to you in a check! I have sprayed this paint many times and the end result is awesome, my favorite is the Crazer, but please do not use this paint for your whole paint job, just use it as an accent!

I took this next picture off another post. Although I'm pretty sure it's a photoshop job, it resembles the bike Nicky Hayden rode when he won the MotoGP championship last year. And remember that you don't have to get too fancy, either. Look at the bike in FotoMoto's avatar. I've seen pictures of that bike a hundred times and I still can't get over how good it looks.

Okay, here is what I'm thinking about doing...Sig Sauer, I need your input.... I want to lay down white with a red pearl, I don't want it to look pink, but I would like it to show red under street lights. I also would like to paint the piece between the headlights black, can someone photoshop this, I think it would look good and give it a 6th Gen touch. Thanksin advance for the work guys (Travis).

Good luck. I haven't been painting long, but I doubt you'll be able to do it, without it look'n pink in some lights. Need to recruit Seb., Silver, Blue fire, and others, on this one. My guess is prolly a LOT of silver fleck clears, with a deep red mica. As for the black, you shoot'n for the Eddie Munster?

Funny you posted that today, I JUST walked in the door and was looking for a refresher on wet sanding, I honestly haven't touched the bike in 2 months due to an extremely hectic school schedule, but this pretty weather is killing me and I HAVE to get it done so I can go ride. I stil have to repair the plastics and wet sand everything, will keep you posted!

Lots of opinions here. I vote for a stock paint scheme for your model/year. Every time I see custom paint I think, " I wonder how bad the bike was screwed up in the crash."

My .02 - I really like the Cadillac Metallic white I've seen on Escalades or whatever. It's white, it's silver, it's unusual, it's monochrome... Best thing is, no matter what colour you paint it, it's still a VFR!

I think the same a lot of times, but when I see a job that is well done I also think "Wow that looks good and different!" I have no plans to sell the bike, just wear it out, so I'm not worried about resell. I'm gonna take a venture to the custom side and have something a little bit different.

Yeah I remember you giving me the run down in one of the threads that I started about this, of course it was in the other one, I just wanted to read up to freshen up my memory before I did it wrong. Plastic epoxy is setting up on some of the parts right now with the drywall tape backing, we'll see what it looks like in the morning. I'm thinking of putting down another layer of the tape/ epoxy when everything dries to give it more strength, I don't see why this would be a bad idea. Any reason not to?

Should be good to go. Just be damn sure your epoxy's fully cured. AND, be sure to scuff it up with a 80 grit sandpaper. (If you don't, the layers will separate).

Doggone! That IS pretty! I loved the Ducati STs with that color - or one close to it. I love the splashes of red on the blue - the seat welt, the decal and even the tailight. Nice job!

Here I am with my third appeal for a sticky that features pictures of all the custom painted VFRs!
Any paint that is not stock would make the cut... even it if is the Italian Red for a 2001 on a formerly (slightly different) red 2002.

And, No, I do not have a custom painted bike.

Come on someone!... Just start a thread. Call it "Custom Painted VFRs" and post it to the body and paint forum.
NOTE: Post one picture of a reasonable size of your bike (not 17 giant images).
