Thinking About Getting Back Into The Vfr Fold

Hi everyone,

I lurked, and posted a few times, back in the summer of 2005 when I owned a 6th gen VFR. I had to sell that one due to my need of more reliable winter transportation(a car). That and the fact I was never comfortable with the VTEC aspect of the bike. In fact, I hated the VTEC to be honest. I liked everything else about the bike though.

Anyways fast forward to now. I went through last season bikeless and am now getting the itch again as this season looms on the horizon. I have been perusing the classifieds, bike trader, kijiji etc. and seeing what is out there and I have come across a few 5th gen VFR's for half decent prices. Seeing as how I loved my 6th gen minus the VTEC would I love a 5th gen?

I am mainly looking for something to commute on and do weekend rides to the twisty's(1 to 1.5 hours away, probably good day long trips all said and done). Anything I should check while looking at prospective bikes other than the usual things? There is a sweet red 1999 model for sale just down the street from my house which I am gonna try and have a look at if it is still available. 14k km's, looks stock and looks pretty mint in the pictures. Also there is a 2000 Blue one with higher mileage, approx same price also looks stock. And there is a Yellow '99(I thought yellow was a 2000 colour? or did we canucks get different colour schemes) which has a bunch of mods(pipe, power commander) and polished wheels(not big on the polished wheels). All are around the same price.

Any comments would be welcome. There is also a 91 VFR 750 for sale, also red near me, it is substantially cheaper than the 5th gens but I am not sure if I want such an old bike. Any comments on those is welcome as well. It looks to be in good shape judging by the pics but I haven't seen it in person.

Welcome back. You'll love a 5th gen. I can't stress enough a pcIII and cozye's map, if you don't like the vtech transition. BUT again, you'll love a 5th gen.

You will love a 5th gen. I've both. I don't mind the VTEC at all, not an issue. But if it is, the purely lineal 4 valved power of the FI will do the trick!! It weighs virtually the same, has virtually the same power to weight ratio, very similar riding position, just a slightly retro look. Go for it!!

The VFR is not the best commuter if you're talking slow speeds and lots of red lights. She runs hot and likes to be on the move. Overheating the VFR is not good for the longevity of certain crucial components, but if, like me, your commuting takes place on a smooth flowing highway at 80 km/h and above, your VFR will love you back!!

Love my '00!! I even prefer the looks to the newer ones. I have no complaints.

It's hard to answer a question when you don't know the person asking it. I've owned my 99 more than 7 years. I use it as my touring bike. I have other bikes but none that replace what the vfr does. Until someone makes something that replaces it, it will stay in the stable. I have looked at every bike that has come along since it and none fill my needs as well. That's the bottom line. What are your needs?

The '91 is collectible, but heavy and hard to find parts for, particularly accessories and suspension upgrades.

'91 is a beautiful bike but I personally hate dealing with carbs, and not many options in upgrades as mentioned.

Day long rides with twisties in between is the 5th gen's purpose in existence. You can't go wrong. Slap a powercommander, pipe and seat on it and go. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif)

Yes my commute is all highway and generally moves along between 60-120km/h. The odd time I may get stuck in gridlock when there is an accident but I find during the summer months the traffic is alot less heavy. And no snow days to worry about, we just had like 2 days of crazy snow here.

I am starting to really like the looks of the 5th gen, the more I look at it the more I like it. For some reason when I was shopping and bought my 6th gen I really didn't like the 5th. I guess our likes and dislikes change over time.

I kinda posted what I wanted to use the bike for in my original post. Mainly day trips to the twisties and riding to work weather permitting.

Wow we got green? I don't think I have ever seen a green one. Not many black 5th gens either for that matter. Seen all the rest for sale though. Yeah I kinda figured that would be the case with the 91. That's the kind of info I wanted to hear about it. Thanks. Leaning more towards the 5th gen unless something else catches my eye.

This is what I wanted to hear!! Thanks! Pipe and Seat for sure, never had a power commander or felt the need for one except maybe on the 6th gen but sold it before it got to that. Any comments on the power commander?

I've owned a 6th gen and now a 5th gen. I also didn't like the vtec and sold mine to get rid of payments when I was buying a house.

I do like the 5th gen better. Its lighter (although still not light like an SS), has the gear driven cam sound and has all the rest of the stuff you like about the 6th gen. Oh yeah, pipe is cheaper since there is only one. I must admit that the vtec bikes look better, but the 5th gen isn't bad or anything.

I don't know that stoplight commuting is bad, I commuted daily on my 6h gen in vegas summer for a year. That means sitting at a light in 100+ degree weather every day. The fans kick on and it stays between 200 and 225 degrees. How this might have affected the bike long term I'll never know, but I never had it shut down on me. We'll see how the 5th gen acts this summer. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/biggrin.gif)

All in all I think you'll love it. Buying used allows more $$ for upgrades and you can make it truly yours.
