Any ideas on this one... I get a strange ticking noise when the clutch is pulled in. Here is a full description of the symptoms
Noise comes from between the tank and the forks Only happens with the clutch pulled in most of the way (when cluch is FULLY 100% squeezed tight, no tick) When bike is in nuetral, no tick Tick does not appear to be engine speed specific
My best guess is a loose valve inside the engine, but I don't know why the clutch/transmission would have anything to do with that. Second thought was loose spark plug/wire, but again, don't know what clutch/transmission would have to do with it.
I haven't really dug into it yet, just looking for ideas before I do.

Noise comes from between the tank and the forks ???????????? You sure? Only happens with the clutch pulled in most of the way Seems like the standard tick. (when cluch is FULLY 100% squeezed tight, no tick) This I don't recall having seen. When bike is in nuetral, no tick Seems like the standard tick. Tick does not appear to be engine speed specific Seems like the standard tick.
Second thought was loose spark plug/wire, but again, don't know what clutch/transmission would have to do with it. Won't hurt to check, but your right, it would have no bearing.

Clutch plates flapping against each other at a certain point in the lever? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)
I used to hear a sound like that, mainly if going around the block, no earplugs. Was never a problem. Wonder if the new clutch does it. I'll have to check. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)
I wasn't aware there was a 'standard tick'. What does this tick sound like? where does it come from? I've had the bike a few years, and it did it last year for sure, don't remember if it did it the year before or not. It seems to have gotten worse this year, I'm assuming because I changed the clutch /brake fluid, which changed the whole dynamic of the clutch lever. (it was the original fluid in Y2K VFR)

Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. Sorry. Couldn't help it.
They all do it. Has to do with Honda's V4 design. I paniced, when I first noticed mine. As long as it runs good, don't worry. Not sure if any threads are left, but, as of last month, there were a hand full, on the subject.
where does it come from? It's the plates.

Sounds to me like the flapper valve - doesn't tick when in neutral, nor when the clutch lever is pulled right in. I have lots of ticks on my bike - mebbe I should get some insecticide? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/goofy.gif) I have the flapper valve ticking, the scissor gears ticking, the injectors tick, the clutch rattles, and I think I have a noisy valve or two.
I have a similar "tick" sound on mine now. Never noticed it before...Seems to have started after I had the clutch fluid bled and replaced a month or so ago. It sounds like it's coming from the front end, near the bars and probably from around the clutch lever - which is a Pazzo (set) that's been on my bike for over a year.
At lower rpms (when I can hear it better), I get a small but noticeable 'click' noise when I release the clutch lever.
Last time I was at my dealer's shop I had one of the service advisors check it out with me in the parking lot. His thought was that it's the clutch sensor button or lever (sorry for lack of exact terminology here) that tells the bike when the clutch is in or out. That may or may not be true, but I haven't noticed any problems other than that audible click now, so I'm not too worried about it.
Noticed the same sound recently, from the same location on my 1998 and only when the clutch was engaged (pulled back). Seems like it has gone by the wayside for now.....really didn't notice it at all this past weekend (500 + miles of riding).
5th gens tick. Mine has ticked from the same area since day one. Sounds like it comes form the front of the bike. But the whole thing ticks. The front of the bike acts as a megaphone for sounds. If the fluids are good and the bike runs well, don't worry about it and just have fun riding.

It does sound like he is hearing the flapper valve. All he needs to go is lift the tank up and pull off the vacuum line to it, plug it and put the tank back down to confirm. Might take 5 minutes to do.
Correction: My 6th gen's clicking noise is heard upon opening the throttle. Not a clutch noise - it's definitely the throttle. I had a few minutes sitting at a long stoplight this morning and realized that's what it is.
Now, I'm not sure what is really causing that click, but it still doesn't concern me a great deal. The bike is running fine, so I'll worry about it if and when another issue pops up.
StumpyNB, May 13 2008, 10:34 AMIs the 'flapper valve' the flapper thing on the airbox, above the air-filter? Why would that be effected by clutch/neutral? I will check it out.
Yes it is. It is activated as you move the clutch lever just off the bar, while in gear. Sounds like a rattle, and only for a very short period of time, but everytime you try it. As I said, it takes less than 5 minutes to disconnect to verify that is the noise you have. You need only remove the two front bolts from the tank (and the seat), and raise the tank up. Use a golf tee to block the hose, drop the tank, and see if the noise is gone.

I bet that is what is is then... When I changed the clutch fluid, I also had the tank up and inspected my air-filter, wonder if I wiggled something loose so it flapps easier or something like that. What is the purpose of the flapper valve? Why would it activate with the clutch?
StumpyNB, May 14 2008, 06:33 AMWhat is the purpose of the flapper valve? Why would it activate with the clutch?
It opens at 5500 rpm (IIRC), to open another airway into the airbox. I'm not sure why - it's either to make the bike quieter at the revs noise and emissions testing is done, or it's because of Helmholtz resonances etc and is more efficient, or both. I *do* know that my bike seemed to perform worse when I disconnected it, so I put it back how it was. I'm not sure why it activates with the clutch, but for some reason it's linked to the clutch switch. It doesn't make noises when the gearbox is in neutral. I've read the explanation in the workshop manual, and it still doesn't make sense. as far as I can work out, what's happening is that when the bike's in gear, the solenoid is activated, and the fluctuations in manifold pressure at low revs make the flapper valve just barely open and shut (flutter), which makes the rattly/ticky noise as bounces of its seat.
Turns out it was the CCT, darn thing was rattling around with the gear driven cams and causing all sorts of racket.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
lol anyway...
Blocked off the flapper tonight and went for a quick ride, problem solved. I didn't notice any performance difference, but I also only went for a 5 minute ride. Thanks guys. Even if i did loose a tad bit of performance, its worth not having to listen to that annoying noise.
