This isn't looking good..

Only 5000 miles of commuting so far in 4 months of ownership and I've got a cracked pipe which is hopefully going to get fixed under warranty. Now striking her up for work this morning, I turn the ignition and the dash only half lights up with a sort of buzzing, I switch the bike off and on again, same thing, try a 3rd time and she boots up fine hearing that whirring sound of the pump as normal.

I've still got an FI light that gives me 24 blinks, 02 sensor problem I believe, seems my bike didn't like the eliminator mod. Now I have got everything connected back up as standard but still get the FI light.

... then the other day the bike had a spaz attack on me as it was warming up just going about 40mph in 2nd gear coming from work and the bike stalls and the rev counter swung all the way round and back to 0 in a second. Could be a side stand switch problem??

WTF is going on!!

Perhaps time to say goodbye to this viffer before anything else happens (uno what I'm like) - it's not exactly encouraging me to keep it and I'm already tempted by a nice clean 5th gen.

Steve,
Fear not....take the left side lowers off and find a large blue connector against the frame under the left handlebar. In the bottom corner is a green/pink wire. That's the ground for the front of the bike. I suspect it is corroded inside the connector...I know mine was and gave me the exact symptoms you describe. I simply cut the wire on either side of the connector, spliced in a jumper and put a pigtail on that I landed on a good ground (neg. of the battery, frame, etc). No more troubles....give it a shot?

And this is the reason why I come to this site virtually every hour.

Nothing like our VFRD brotheren to give anyone a hand. :fing02:

Sure sounds a LOT like the grounding issue.

Have you had the recall done Steve?
#5
wow thanks for the replies already! I love that knight rider car, one day I'll get a flashing red L.E.D on the front of my viffer

I've supposedly had all the recalls done although when I mentioned the wiring harness recall to the UK dealers they looked at me like this..
then said we've never heard of that recall on any of our bikes. Perhaps this only effects US models?

I'll give this a shot Jon thanks and let you know, I'm pleased I'm not alone.

As for the FI light that's still a mystery at the moment, a new 02 sensor is 173!!!! I don't even want one, I just want that FI light to stay off running with the elminators.

Thanks again for your help, hopefully I can get through this without too much pain

Here is a bit more info on what happens.

I've just taken a spin around the local backroads on my lunch break, during de-acceleration the FI light went OFF, followed by a stinky rich smell and the bike just shudders right down to say 500rpm and tries desperately to keep going, you can rev it but it will eventually die, wait a few seconds strike her up and everything is fine again albeit the FI light is back.
#7
Sounds like the front harness issue. Here is a link from Dutchinterceptor when he had his buzzing noise. Is it the same sound as his was? If so, definitely the front harness.
#8
Thanks, I'll get it checked out this weekend and report back and let you know. Annoying how this is happening after all my recall work was supposed to be done and I don't think it's included over here.

Nice profile pic of your vfr btw, I got bored with my dark blue one very quickly but there's something about how silver looks on the 6th gen.
#9
As far as I recall (no pun intended) only the US and Canada have recognized the wiring harness recall so far. I can't imagine how the Euro bikes could be different...since they have the same issues! Mod is easy, you don't even have to cut the wires.

The Honda VFR Club forum in the UK knows about the wiring harness problem. It's hard to believe that European dealers don't know. It makes me think they didn't want to fool with it. As far as I can tell from reading the UK forum, our bikes are structurally identical.

turning a blind eye hey, that just stinks Honda!!

I've seen this topic here.. http://www.vfrdiscus...showtopic=34394

Is that what I need to do? I'm tempted to wait until my bike goes in for the weekend and have it fixed under warranty along with the pipe welding. If not least it should be an easy fix.

Thanks very much for all your help guys.

Steve, sorry to say but I'm 99% sure you have the dreaded Ground Wire problem which is covered in N. America under a Recall. Just do the simple repair by KKen in this thread and most if not all of your problems will disappear.

Let us know! :fing02:

#13
one quick silly question, does it matter which sort of wire you use?
#14
best if multistrand wire of similar or larger diameter (guage) then what is on there. too small won't allow current flow and will not help with problem.

sorry, dont know guage off top of my head.

If it's still under warranty, recalls or not, it should be covered.
I got a new front harness when it got smoked and that was before the recall.
So, ask for a new subharness AND do the ground bypass as well.
The heavier guage, the better. (10-12?)

odear..

Last night I had no soldering iron so I've left the wiring harness in the hope I'll be ok to get to the dealer tomorrow...

now, tomorrow comes and I get up for work, start the bike... buzzzzz, manage to get it going, half way up the road and she dies and adamant of not starting again. So I walk my bike, complete with heavy topbox up the hill back to my house, take the fairing off (whilst ringing work to say I'm going to be late in the pouring rain) and check the wiring on the blue connector... everything looks fine, nothing fried and no smell. Well I turn my attention to the 02 sensors that don't actually work on my bike at the moment as I'm still getting the FI sensor error code. The sensors felt hot but that's probably normal, I decided to unplug them anyway, bike starts up no problems, I leave it running for 5 mins and she warms up nicely. I replace the fairing and ride to work with no problems and the bike felt fine... ohh and that VTEC point is soo smooth on this bike.

Not sure what to tell the dealer, maybe I need to get these expensive 02's sorted out first and make that jump wire on the harness another time to pre-empt that problem.

I am curious as to why you installed the O2 eliminators in the first place. Doing this without remapping with a Power Commander would seem to cause problems in the first place.

I hope that your problems don't return.

I don't think he installed any 02 eliminators, just unplugged the stock ones!

btw installing just 02 elim. and nothing else does and has helped many guys smooth their low end response by fattening up the mixture. :fing02:

Steve, you actually may want to buy some Dynojet o2 eliminators ($30 US) instead of factory o2's as running them unplugged will/should cause a Fi light.
#19
Well I'm still stuck at my girfriends friends and hopefully the problem will be sorted soon. I've asked the dealership to order me some 02 elminators, I am under the impression that I don't have to have a Power Commander to also use this mod, believe me with these horrible sensors unplugged the bike runs smoooooth, seamless vtec, better low end response and no dips.

The mechanic said it is possilbe that because of the crack in the pipe, this may be causing the FI light error as the sensors may be reporting a lack of pressure... I'll find out soon...

Is your exhaust pipe crack before or after the O2 sensors? If it's before the sensors, this is what is happening. Your exhaust is sucking in air though the crack, causing the O2 sensors to read high O2 in the exhaust. Therefore, the signal to the ECU is read as a lean condiction. The ECU makes the the mixture richer, and richer. Never ending cycle. You end up with fouled plugs. O2 sensors can get fouled also. I had this happen to me with a cracked header.

:+1:

Totally agree with the above. Those gosh-darn closed loop systems do all sorts of "wonderful" things when the O2 sensors get bad data.

odear (part two)

The pipe is now 'filled in' with a bodgy weld but it's filled in nonetheless. The Mechanic then spent a further 4 hours (free) trying to locate the problem... which is..

buzzing coming from under the clocks, if you leave it for 10 seconds the bike then suddenly boots up as normal... the Mechanic, under my instruction checked the wiring harness and everything was fine, no corrosion at all. During his voltage and plug checks the bike suddenly decided to run fine again with no problems. By this time is was getting very late in the day and getting very cold and I still had to get home (100 miles away).

The journey back was fine, nice smooth ride, the whole 100 miles. BUT just now, I've just rode the last 15 miles in the dark to my house with the girlfriend and suddenly... no lights!!! just pitch black road in front of me doing 70mph..... I managed to stop without going into the dirt. At this point I had to decide whether to turn back or try and battle on... Since the distance was 50/50 I decided to plough on and just as I got home, went to push the right indicator to go down my road and the whole thing cut out and in again aghhh!!!!!

Glad I've made it home, strange thing is, If I unplug the 02 sensors again tomorrow morning it probably will be fine.

Tomorrow I will make a break in the green wire and earth it, even though the wire itself is fine with no signs of burning.

Whats going on guys! I'm starting to get pretty pi**ed with all this!! :pissed:

tried the mod, same problem.

Although when I take the Lights fuse out fro the sub panel (right side) the bike runs fine again,. but with no lights
#25
well this is great stuff, running around at the moment with no lights or indicators!!

Need to get this sorted but running out of dosh already this month...

think this bike might be going....

Are you talking about the extra ground wire mod at the blue connector and if so what exactly did you do?

It's the front side of the blue connector that needs the ground not the back side if you didn't tie the two together with a wire and then ground to chassis.

Well, on a similar story with my VTEC - same story... rode around and then it just cut-out! Did it one time. I pulled it into the garage to disconnect them o2 sensors, and abracadabrea - 3 years worth of no such similar problems followed their removal... I have since replaced those sensors with no ill effects as of to-date... Running strong and reliable. Wierd HuH?

I have recently reconected the o2 sensors again, and this has resulted in no further issues of the kind. I dont know?

Steve, hundreds of members here have had very similar issues and your symptoms are the typical reasons for the Honda harness Recall here in North America. The issue is being covered/handled here, unlike Europe.
If you read the "Vtec Elec. problems" thread it will describe the same symptoms.
Again
Are you talking about the extra ground wire mod at the blue connector and if so what exactly did you do?

It's the front side of the blue connector that needs the ground not the back side if you didn't tie the two together with a wire and then ground to chassis.
#30
Hi Bailey sorry for seeming to ignore your post, I've spent most the night trawling through the net searching for anything relating to members here in the UK having these problems and Im missed your input. You're definitely right it would seem. I probably didn't do the mod properly.. well I didn't solder the point because of lack of equipment and the wire I used was probably too thin. You mentioned about earthing it from the back, I tried to emulate what I did in a picture that another member here posted, using the 1st part of the wire on the wire nearest the front, the second spliced part of the wire at the back then the end part to the frame with .. But no luck

I'll get hold of a few mechanics tomorrow and tell them exactly what I think it is and how much would this little fix cost me! I just hope this is the issue because it's driving me nuts!!

.. oh and I've just realised my bike is in fact a 2003, reg in 2005!!!
#31
well... spent about an hour with a mechanic, stripped it down, cleaned all the wires, moved them and.. huh? the problem has gone again... it may come back who knows...

We tried the earth mod before we 'fixed' the issue but it didn't make any difference. The problem is located somewhere in the light loom, but since then I've ridden to work this morning with a nice smile on my face with fully working indicators and everything!!!

Thinking it might be a good time to sell her this weekend before and IF the problem comes back.

Steve,
Yes it is and that is exactly what the North American Recall replaces, the front harness. There's only 3 harnesses on the bike, rear sub, main and front sub which runs the lights, dash, relays, etc. and it all grounds through a single wire(green) that runs through the blue connector.
We lost the original thread through one of the site crashes, but I re-started it a year or so later to address and log all the symptoms and issues we were having here:
http://www.vfrdiscus...showtopic=18560
This problem has been LONG know here in the US with symptoms showing as early as 03/04, Honda refused to acknowledged that a problem existed even though there were hundreds of bikes having almost exactly the same symptoms(like yours). Finally in late 06 or early 07 Honda accepted the reality that there indeed was a problem and redesigned a front sub harness and provided a RECALL to address the issue, but it seems like it was NOT a Worldwide Recall even though all bikes are the same!
VFRD members have worked on this issue for the last 4-5 years, found the problem and created their own fix "Blue harness connector fix" which seems to be unnecessary after the recall work is done.
I knew about the problem because of VFRD and had pulled every connector on the bike apart and added dielectric grease in an effort to reduce the problem, but one day I walked out to the garage to try and start the bike and nothing! Just a buzzing from behind the dash and no fuel pump priming so the bike would not start even if it did crank. I pulled the blue connector apart, but there was No sign of melting or problems because of the grease (I think), but because I knew about the problem I pulled up VFRD and did the Blue connector fix. 30 min. later I was riding again and have not had another problem in the last two years.
I still think this is the source of your problems and if the fix was done correctly would fix the problems for good! The few other harness issue seem to be related to sparatic shorting caused by the protective cover on a single wire or two that has rubbed through and occasionally shorts against a ground point.
This is most common after some service has been performed on the bike or after a crash repair and a harness wasn't run correctly causing it to rub.

My bike is covered by the Recall, but I have yet to have it done because my repair fixed the problem.

btw if I'm not mistaken the new Recall front sub harness no longer grounds through that Blue connector!

Hi Bailey, I've tried the blue connector mod twice, once on my own, then I printed off the excellent photo from here showing how to earth it and STILL no luck. After cleaning all the connectors from the front light loom assembly everything worked fine again up untill about a day ago. Now I know if I wiggle the wire at the front the problem is resolved (well untill you flash someone for being a numpty and the whole bike shuts down, say going to work this morning)

The good thing is the dealer has finally exepted that I can't go on like this so Im' taking it to them Tuesday and they are giving me another bike to ride in the meantime... I wonder what it will be? I'll miss my VFR though :(

Steve,
I'm glad the Dealer is going to try and help you out! It's obviously a poor ground issue IMO, but your 05 does have a different harness than my 02 with a few extra things that US models never got(such as Flash to Pass) so there's so other differences I'm not aware of, making my statement that there all the same wrong!
There may be another grounding source on your front harness that I'm not aware that could be the source of the problem.
Good luck and please keep us informed. :fing02:
#36
I wonder if he doesn't has a broken wire some place in that front harness. Broken inside the insulation. If he can wiggle it, and it works for a short period of time. Glad to see the dealer stepping up.
Hopeful you get a new front harness. Show the dealer all the things that are listed on the forum about the harness problems that have come up. Maybe the dealer (or UK Honda) will replace it for free. Wishful thinking.
#37
that's interesting, so there are some differences after all?

Well I'm basically at work till 4pm then I'm jumping on my bike and heading to the dealer, should take about an hour and half to get there, I'm going to keep topping her up with petrol, they've had plenty of my money and time already

I'll keep you all informed, it will be interesting to hear the outcome, plus then we will have this documented in case a similar issue happens to any other UK VFR's on this site.

I was doing some other work and decided to do the blue connector upgrade on my 05' a few months ago; to my surprise I found there is no green wire entering the front of the blue connector, just a green wire going out the rear of the connector. I could swear before my wiring harness upgrade there was a green wire in from the front and one leaving the corresponding terminal out the other side.

Did the 05' harness upgrade change the ground system at that point?

Yes, I'm pretty sure all updated (Recalled) front harnesses eliminate this green(ground) wire from the front sub harness at the Blue connector. I have No idea where the ground was moved to, but it's obviously been changed!

Well at the moment I'm running around on a Suzuki Bandit 600 with manual choke... The VFR is going to feel like a rocket after this thing, although I;m quite surprised how comfortable that big old seat is and she has plenty of character!

I'll get a pic up of it soon!
#41
update: the bike is going to a specialist on Tuesday to get checked out and tested and hopefully fixed, I've decided against the 5th gen now and I'm starting to miss the silver bullet I hope it's fixed soon.

In the meantime this is what I'm running around on... (picn taken from google images but exactly the same bike/colour)

the VFR will feel like a missile when I finally get her back!!

OH MAN!! 3 weeks (or is it 4) I've been without my Silver Bullet and I'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms! I've even had a dream about her last night, that never happens

The problem? A completely fried light loom cable. I'll try and get a pic of the damage when I FINALLY get her back!!!

At the moment I've still got the bandit, which is now struggling to start in the mornings and the suspension on the front feel totally knackered making the bike feel like's it's got a permanent flat front tyre!

I can't go on like this for much longer, I NEED my VTEC BACK!! :wheel:

OH MAN!! 3 weeks (or is it 4) I've been without my Silver Bullet and I'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms! I've even had a dream about her last night, that never happens

FINALLY

Have my bike back :wheel:

I've never felt so strange making a transtion than when I jumped on my VFR after riding well over 1000 miles on the courtesy bandit 600 this past month. The bike had a sort of charm and lovable character but boy am I glad I've got my viffer back - what kind of idiot reckons these things are underpowered... it felt like a rocket compared to the 600 and to be fair that had enough power for the street.

The thing that struck me most was the position, as I fired her up and remembered that beautiful V4 noise from my BOS pipes, pulling off plenty of other bikers were watching.. I felt like I was laid on top of it for the 1st 20 or 30 miles and feeling all that useable torque then... VTEC... Hell yea I almost forgotten what that felt like!

So no FI light or engine cutting with the turn-signals... all I have to do now is get a set of new Bridgestones on her and an oil change and filter and it's nearly christmas!!

Striking her up today the nifty temp gauge read -1c... I'm very glad to have used my gerbing heated gloves today and my Jacket is in the post (3rd one now).

Ride safe out there guys!!!

Basically to cut a long story short, going to the workshop (nearly 3 hour ride) to get this thing fixed AGAIN... This time a completely new wire loom/harness.. what they should of done in the p***ing 1st place :pissed: :pissed:

and I'm taking it there myself and STAYING in the workshop till they do it properly and I'm not letTing this bike out of my sight!

Hey Steve, sorry to say it but: Welcome to the club. My Blue VTECker is an '03, just like yours (BR: his was registered for the first time in '05, but is an '03). I've been a month without her now. Very similar symptoms, but mine died altogether from one day to the next. First day it would jerk around 8000 RPM, then the next day it died in the fast lane on the highway... jump started her and got another 4 km out of her. Battery was so low the FI would go wild. Stator's dead. I thought it was the wiring harness too, but it's easy to check... there's a thread around here somewhere... although I am leaning towards yours being the harness and not the stator, due to the buzzing under the display panel... and your battery seems to hold up. Have them check out the stator while they're at it as they are intimately related.

Bought all the bits from Tightwad... half the price or less than what it'd cost me over here. Has happened on one of my mate's '02 twice now... Honda Spain has turned a blind eye as well... I know personally 8 early VTEC owners who have suffered this fate... it's a crime.
Thankfullly yours is still in warranty and the shop is (finally) taking responsability.

We should hook up in France next summer... south of Brest would be about midway...

I know I had a hell of a time getting my recall fixed at the dealer. Cause my '02 VFR came from California as a write off, and I imported it into Canada. Honda America will not issue recall letters to anyone who is not a resident of the US. In other words it took me three weeks to get a recall letter, the dealer get permission to do the recall, and get the parts. It sat at the dealer for three and a half weeks.
I never had a problems with it before, or after the recall was completed. Although according to the import laws I had to have the recall completed before I could complete the import procedure. What a headache hahaha took about a month and a half of phone calls, and faxes just to get it legal.

Hi Auspanol thanks, I think I'll show them this thread when I go there tomorrow. It's nice in some ways that I really am not the only one with this problem, what I'm worried about is if I actually by some amazing stroke of luck get this fixed will it happen again?! This really is, to be honest a deal breaker on whether I keep my vtec because a reacurring problem like this is not only VERY dangerous, it will always be in the back of your mind... so I guess those 5th gen 00 + 01's really are the most reliable ?

It would be great to meet up in France, lets make it happen :fing02:

in short....

the mechanic replaced the yellow earth block and earth wires and took it to the frame... did a neat job of it too.

So far no issues but it took a few days for it to rear it's ugly head last time...

it's simple, if this happens again anytime soon... she's gone.

YELLOW earth block, replace wires and take out the block completely and find an earth to the frame, so far Bike has been a charm - thanks guys for all your help.

I think.. and hope I've cracked it.
