Today I took delivery of my new to me 2002 VFR. I found this wire hanging out on the inside of my left fairing, next to my left front fork tube. I have no idea what it is. Could it be the outside temp sensor?

It's the cable that keeps you from tilting your tank too far back. There is a bolt on the left side of the frame that you attach that end to.

Oh, I just noticed the rest of your reply further below in your post. :) OK, let me go look. I didn't see anything in the manual...
Take the two bolts off the top of the tank and tilt it back. One end attaches to the bottom side of the tank near the front and the other side attaches to the left hand side of the frame near the steering head. By the looks of it you won't have the bolt so look for holes that are threaded that don't have anything in them! Oh yeah, I think you'll have to remove the left hand lower cowl to get to the frame. Looks like you'll be familiarizing yourself with removing the plastic right off the bat. While you've got it off, you may as well change the coolant cause I'm sure it's the factory stuff still in there from 6 years ago!

I'm going to change the oil Friday morning anyway. Going to take the day off and see how it rides...I hope.

Odds are it is it not the frame attachment, rather it is the tank attachment. There is no reason to ever remove the frame attachment because the left fairing must be removed to do that creating extra work. The tank attachment is the easy way as part of the process of removing the tank.
Just make sure you slip your fingers under those two rubber grommets you see in the upper part of the picture in order to catch and remove the two metal shouldered washers when you lift up the tank or they may fall out creating a not so fun search and retrieval process on your part. If your tank strap was left unattached by the last mechanic, there is a slight chance they never even installed the shouldered washers.

...which leads me to query...what was being worked on and what else isn't hooked up or installed per spec?
Hate to say it but you may want to have someone (moto mechanic) give this thing a once over before you start blasting around :idea3: $.02

+1 Definitely check this first, as it is far easier to check, just remove the 2 bolts and lift your tank up.
I took mine off and tossed it a year ago. If you're doing valve adjustments, PAIR valve removal, etc - it easier to just take the whole tank off IMO. The strap limits how far the tank can be pivoted back without causing damage. Personally, I rather go through the hassle of taking the tank off so I don't have to worry about it flopping sideways or scratching it. Plus, taking the tank off gives you a lot more room to work on the top of the engine.
It definitely falls under the category of "non-essential parts".

+1. Some people just remove them. I've left mine on, but only b/c I'm not crazy about disconnecting fuel lines, etc. and actually removing the tank. Haven't had to yet, but it would be a lot easier to do some work with the tank off. Replacing air filters for instance. ;)

I take it off each time, and religiously put it back on when I�m finished with my project. :laugh:
