This pertains to me personally, I know some of you out there wouldn't ride without music.
A friend gave me a copy of the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic. There's some damn good stuff in there, which makes it another reason I can't listen and ride.
I would lose my license in a heartbeat! :fing02: As opposed to "thinking about listening to it", which for me equates to more of quick stretch of road, then getting back to sanity.
For you other 'tallica fans out there that haven't heard it, GET IT! Best stuff they've put out in years, "All Nightmare Long" would make an awesome track video soundtrack! :laugh:

Even on really long trips I just defer to the "mental jukebox", I find it's better/easier to soak up the scenery and the ride experience that way.
My kids bought me a Q2 to use with my phone (students complains when they can't get me), it has a built in FM radio. I listened to the old, 70's rock and roll and noticed my speed would creep up so I started listening to public radio, classical music when cruizing.
It's been quite relaxing and I don't have the "need" to listen. Saturday took a ride while opra was on and the leaves took on a new color and breathtaking aura. Either that or I kicked out some of that Acid I took at a younger age...
My personal philosophy: riding deserves our full attention so if one wants or needs additional stimulation, it's time for the cage, its A/C and great sound system.
I am one of those who cannot ride without music now (thanks to VFRD and the ERi6). And yes, the new Metallica is great.....FINALLY!!!! I liked St Anger too but didn't care for Reload or Load.....I thought they were both a LOAD!

None of it will ever be as good as the old stuff, but that's inevitable. They're old now! :fing02: The new album comes close though. I do like the Load album, Reload not so much. St. Anger was ok, and some of S&M was pretty damn good, different anyway.
This stuff really tugs on my aggressive chords, so it's definitely a no-no for riding music for me.

I've seen some videos with Joely Jordison of Slipknot on the skins, always wondered what that was all about. I do dig Robert T. on bass though. Plays with fingers, kinda like Cliff did.

I listen to music almost all the time I'm riding now. I load up the mp3 with all sorts of things, turn the volume up to where I hear it but it's not loud enough to drown out what I need to hear, put it on random and let it go. I concentrate better with something in the background. It probably means I'm ADD and don't know it. :-) I have found though, that the random feature somehow always matches the music to the road. Hard rock on the hiways, and the more mellow stuff when I'm cruising through a national park looking at all the cool stuff. It's really funny how it's seemed to sync up with the road I'm on. Obviously I'm in tune with my mp3. ;-)
I've ridden without music but now that I've got, I won't go back.

I didn't think I'd ever listen to tunes while riding but I'm going to try it soon. Got a nice iPod awhile back and finally started using it this weekend. Will listen to it during a couple short rides this week and see how it goes.

It doesn't have to be Metallica to get you in trouble. Classical music can do a number on you also. Try putting Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries on and cranking it and the VFR up all the way. As Robert Duval said in Apocalypse Now, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
On second thought, this is probably a really bad idea, unless you are looking for a dramatic way to check out of this life! Just don't take anyone else with you! :fing02:
I won't do it for two reasons: 1. My helmet is too damn loud with wind noise so I have to crank anything to here it.
2. The faster the beat the faster I ride.
I'd like to know what John Hopkins listens to before MotoGP race. You see him there in the pit garage, headphones on, jiggling away...
I'd imagine it's summat with a very fast tempo, to get him hyped up.

I've listened to some of it, and it sounds good, although the engineer was reputedly embarrassed by it, as the sound quality isn't the best (too much compression). There's an example on the Interdweeb somewhere of a remixed track, and it sounds SO much better than the original.
I found YEARS ago, when I was about 20-ish (so that's like....hmmm.... 127 years or so ago), that playing anything with a fast beat made me drive faster. In particular, I remember some Pay Benatar tunes that were good for driving the Fiat 132 I had at the time in an aggressive manner. And no, I don't just listen to MOR music - I like all sorts, from classical through to metal. But not country or folk music. (I don't have 6 fingers on each hand...)

Bottom line, there's no way I can stand my thoughts while riding so I need the music to keep me focused. Friday I was cruising through the Ozarks in the rain and I was listening to some new age song I have on my walkman. The trees were ablaze with fall coloring and for once I thoroughly enjoyed riding in the rain. Music just makes it all better.

I ride with music from time to time. It depends on the ride and the situation. There are times that it helps me focus, or set a rhythm, such as on the track. If I'm doing long Auto Bahn stints, music is a must, as I'll quickly get bored. There are other times when I'm just out for the ride and sounds, so no music.

That's kinda my story as well. If I'm slogging 200+ miles on the interstate, tunes keep me sane. If I'm slicing-and-dicing on the commute, I need every bit of situational awareness I can muster. Besides, I've got the mother of all quadraphonic symphonies going on right there below me. (And without that pesky gear whine, I can hear the good parts of the engine. :goofy: )
In the cage, I have noticed that listening to old-school Slayer gets me home about 20% quicker. :ph34r:

Ha!!! I do the same thing but switch between am/fm--music, talk shows (too cheap for SAT radio) and my MP3. I like a sound track to the memory. to be honest I here songs all the time that remind me of my meanderings all over the west coast and central states. I also enjoy a good story joke or being kept up to date on bbc news and many others. I did find a work around that would let you view movies on my zumo 550 but that is for when I am stopped. It is just so easy to feel he bike and enjoy he tunes or what ever. I understand why people make the choice not to but I am not pushing 9/10ths while traveling 1000 miles from home even when its good music. Now do not get me wrong we have had some very fun days around the reno area while there but that was not the same.

i just got the results from my last hearing test.. i am 98 % deaf...that song came out 15 years ago when i had some hearing left... i was ON one of the speakers when they had the MTV special ..i got a great veiw of the babes walking by for the song..and yes having a backstage pass does getyou attention from babes.

I listen to a very wide assortment of different styles of music, wide assortment, different stuff, all kinds, diverse, aww crap who am I kidding I hate Metallica! At least Pat Metheny never sold out, or sued 15 year olds for swapping an mp3!
Would it help my reputation if I told you I listened to Toni Morrison read her book Beloved on the way to Tmac last year? No I didnt think so, audio books, keep Kansas clean signs for miles and miles and miles of farmland your damned right I am listening to somthing.
Music is good when you are out on your own. Clip a little iPod shuffle or something in your jacket and let it go. On group rides (with all the other distractions and variables to pay attention to) it's not such a good idea in my mind. All this is predicated on how knowledgable you are in the riding of your group. Plus it's hard to talk at stoplights over Metallica!
