How Do I Not Do The Recall?

So after hearing all of the recall woes, I've decided against having the update done. I have checked the meldown areas, and so far everything looks ok. I would still like to beef up the problem areas as a preventative measure, but what do I need to do? Just the blue connector mod? There are several wire fixes, so I am not clear which one(s) address this problem. I am really not interested in installing the new harness myself either, as many who have had issues. I doesn't sound as if this new harness is much of an upgrade anyway.....

Tightwad put together a harness that bypasses many of the trouble areas calls it the 'VFRNess' - good kit check him out.

Just do it anyway, at the very least you'll have brand new wires to do your mods on...

I suspect that troyce is a lot like me.

I won't say that I have completely decided against it... But the thought of some 19 year old kid replacing my wiring doesn't inspire confidence.

What really turns me off is having all my soldered-in mods cut out or disabled or worse. I am sure that the recall would be taken care of... but that would leave me to duplicate my "banned!-esque" headlight mod, my stebel horn, aux fuse box, cigarette plug, veypor harness....


I may actually take the bike out of service this winter (a first for me, if I do) and read up on the posts regarding the problem and fix it myself. But first, I will try (again) to have the local dealer order me in a harness and I'll stamp the vin for them when I am done.

My charging system was working a lot better with the VFRNess, and my own mods before that, than after the recall. Now I am going to have to go through and do my modifications again. :dry:

I checked out his site - great stuff! I have contacted him about details and I am going to explore this option. It''ll give me something to do this winter.
He even had a plug and play for the blue connector mod.....

my woes were sorted by ripping apart the yellow block earth connector on the front left side and making a new earth to the frame..

It's been a full week now of winter riding with no problems

Just FYI, My bike still died even after doing the blue connector mod, adding the VFRness, and re doing some grounds. However, I am giving credit for the meltdown to the fact that when I bought the bike and did these mods it already had 11k miles on it so maybe the damage was already done.

I'm basically against the recall too. I just don't want my bike ripped apart and then thrown back together. If there was a dealer I could really trust not to do that to me, okay. Otherwise, I'm fixing it myself. I should also add that I'm not convinced that their changes are really going to do any good. Perhaps better, but still short of fixed.

FWIW, I just received my second notice of the recall late last week. I'm in the same boat as a lot of others. . . the dealer can't touch my bike. I did the 30 amp upgrade and will be doing the green wire thing soon. I'm just wondering how long the recall is good if I don't take it in and something experiences an epic fail. Don't these things expire after a few years?

Haven't done mine either! 65k no issues after the ground wire mod and do NOT trust any Dealer Not to screw up my bike.

These Recalls should be good for 5 years or so. :huh:

I too have elected to not do the recall. I have my VFRness installed, and the blue wire fix. I know my R/R is damaged already because my charging voltage is a bit low (but rock steady), but it seems to be contained for now. Better than when it was charging at 15.5 volts....

I was skeptical about my dealer's work too so I removed the tupperware and trucked my primary bike to the dealer. They still routed the harness the wrong way but it wasn't anything to put it in the right spot. My project bike didn't have any plastic or headlights on it when I took it in so all they did was plug in the new harness and drape it over the handlebars.
