Im looking to buy another VFR, but not sure on which one to go with. These are the two im debating on.
2008 vfr800 non-abs new on showroom floor, with OTD price of $9600. Or 2008 vfr800 non-abs with 1600miles, no mods, and not a scratch. But the bike is out of warranty. OTD price $8500. I owned a 04 vfr800 and had some issues with it, so im kinda scared to buy a used bike without the warranty, and you never no how the other owner used or abused the bike, or broke the bike in properly. But then again, its a $1000 dollars off and that can buy alot of assessories for the bike. What would you do?
Well, its a horse a piece. Who doesn't love a brand spankin' new bike which you can break in, not like a used one where who knows what happens. But most VFRs are bullet proof anyways so maybe save the 1000 dollars and get a new staintune exhaust.

I would if I found one close enough. There's one in texas not to far from me, but its RWB and I just cant stand the color Scheme.
If I could get the used bike for 8k I fill like that would be a far price.
I don't know where you're located, but both of those prices are high compared to where I live. I'd see if you can talk the dealer down some more on the new one.

oklahoma. Ive contacted several dealerships and they all tell me that THEY pay $9400 for the bikes.
Look at craigs list Phoenix it would be worth the drive there are several here 6th gens couple at dealerships couple more individual sales. we have a '07 Red with 6700 miles for 7200 or an '05 Silver with Hard bags and 14,000 miles for 5,00 both are asking and I am sure that could be worked down. The bikes are solid and you can find great deals on used save the money and buy accessories.
I found an '03 with 3600 miles was able to get it for 5600 and it rides like a dream for the last 7000 miles.
Good luck

New bikes do give you more piece of mind but I still think a "gently" used bike is the best way to go. I've seen plenty of VFR's for sale by responsible older owners who mainly toured and did not abuse their machines. I've seen great deals on low mileage bikes with lots of extras such as windscreen upgrade, alarms, aftermarket seat, hardbags, etc. You can definately find good deals but you have to be willing to travel up to 500 miles to pick it up. Good luck with your search.

Doesn't really matter what they pay, it's what the market will bear. Times are tough right now for MC dealers. To get an idea of the asking price of new bikes, go to Cycletrader.com. Here's a search I did for new 2007 leftovers in Texas. It's a red non-abs one for $8577 located in Denton, Tx.

+1 on the post above. What a dealer paid for it has no real bearing on what I'm willing to pay. Just because he got screwed doesn't mean I should. As for the problem at hand, well, if I had the 8+k needed for a new bike like that I'd probably shell out the extra grand for the new one just because it's brand freaking new, but I'd definitely be doing some haggling. "I can spend $300 to drive a few hours south and save $1000 on the same bike" would definitely come out of my mouth once or twice though. OR, you could go with the used bike, and put the extra grand on the side for a while. Worried about bugs? Save the money for a few months to be used towards fixing whatever may go wrong with it, THEN worry about your exhaust. 6 months or so later, nothing wrong? You've got that grand, maybe even added interest if it's in the right account, to spend on whatever mods or add-ons you want.

I agree. My luck with buying used bikes has been very good. In the last 10 years I've purchased 7 used bikes. This included 3 VFRs. The average rider of a sport-touring bike such as the VFR or a touring bike like the ST1300/1100 is usually older and much more inclined to do the maintenance and take care of the bike. He's also less likely to flog the crap out of it.
As to going out of state to purchase bikes, I've done that twice. My current ST was purchased from a guy I knew via the internet who lives in Seattle. Flew up there on a cold February day with my gear in hand (including heated clothing) on a free SW Airlines flight (earned from flying on business) and rode it back to Houston. Prior to that one, I purchased another very low mileage ST at a VERY good price from a lawyer in North Carolina. I flew into Knoxville on a commercial airliner and he met me there in HIS plane to fly me to Asheville! Had a most enjoyable ride back. The route home included Deals Gap, rural Tennesee & the Natchez Trace.
My current 2000 VFR was picked up in Austin, TX in 2006. Six years old and that bike only had 6000 miles on it and was an absolute creampuff. Being that it was a VFR, I did the R/R check before handing over the money though.
Whatever you decide on, good luck.

Nothing a coupla cans of flat black wouldnt cure!
Do yourself a favor and follow the advice above. EDIT: Correction - advice of mick ;p
A bike is not like a car, which has a lot of things to go wrong. It's a pretty simple machine and really doesn't break all that much. This is especially true for Honda, which is known for its reliability. Some people would only buy new b/c that gives them the most satisfaction - I can dig that. You on the other hand are willing to buy used. It's just a matter of how used.
To give you an example, I bought my bike used with 12K miles for $4200 on eBay about 3 years ago. If you see it, you'll never know that it wasn't a one owner bike and I've never had any issues with it. This allowed me to get into the sport to begin with, b/c I couldn't afford to pay the "new" price. Now, even if I did, I don't think I want to pay more than twice as much to ride the same bike.
Add to that that fact that the typical demographic for a VFR is mostly old farts like the good folks on this forum     (OK, myself included  ) who treat their bikes pretty well, and you get the winning combination.
eBay is your friend.
Good luck.

Good point...and Denton is reasonably close to anywhere in Oklahoma.

I agree completely, but the "gently" used bike must come at a kicka$$ price. The deals are out there; I paid $6800 for a 2 year old VFR with 1400 miles on it several years ago. Since then, I've put 15K more on the odometer with no problems (except for an issue with some stupid little thing called a R/R)
I would never spend that much on a bike with no warranty.... no matter what. If you've got the money to spare, buy the new one, under warranty, or take a bus to get one at way less the price from someone trustworthy off here on VFRD and ride it home...
In my case I bought a 2003 VTEC VFR with 35,000 KM on the clock from one of my best mates who moved on to a ZX-10R. I paid what the dealers offered him to trade it in: 6,000 €. New they are going for 12,000 - 14,000 €. So I paid half price for a used bike which I know was looked after to the max (for this guy money is no obstacle and he spared nothing on upkeep and maintenance). If he had sold the bike on the secondhand market, he could have got 9,000 € for it at that time (just before the economic crash).
Since then I have smashed it into a guardrail and completely replaced the front end and other bits with secondhand parts in good condition, as well as having to replace the stator and R/R after it fried on me and I still haven't even spent 8,000 € in total (bike + repairs). SO I've still got 1,000 € up my sleeve before I'll have paid market price... and if I had those 1,000 € to spare I'd invest in some more goodies, such as a Laser exhaust system... I did all the work myself of course but the point I'm trying to get across is, if it doesn't have a warranty, I'd require a much bigger savings margen to cover possible unfortunate mishaps and such (ok, it's true, an accident like mine, i.e. hitting a guardrail, isn't covered by any warranty, but you get my drift, right?)

For that fact, there are plenty of folks, here, that would trade you panels.
