For a long time I have been envious of the 6th gen tail. I am seriously considering getting the whole back end off the frame and modding it to fit my 5th. I love the balanced look to the 6th gen rear end.
Anyway, I was thinking more about this mod this morning and I realised something. If I do this, couldn't I use the factory hard bags with factory mounting hardware? I mean if I have a complete 6th gen rear, the bags should just clip on, right?
What are the mounting points for the bags, or the brackets they clip on to? What I'm really asking is, do you need to keep the passenger peg brackets installed to use the hard bags?

I would just buy a 6th gen and drop a 5th gen motor into it. That has to be a whole lot easier :warranty:
I have purchased a 6th gen rear sub frame and am strongly leaning toward doing this as well. My primary reason was for the factory hard bags and the better looking rear end.

The passanger foot rest has an arm that sticks off of it that the frame for the bags mounts too. That frame also connects under the grab rails and behind the license plate.
If everything from the driver back was 6th gen, it should work, but mounting the whole 6th gen rear end will be the hard part.

Yes: you need the passenger peg brackets for the factory hard bags. I had to put them back on when my bags arrived.

Why do you think mounting the subframe will be so difficult? I think I can fab up 4 adapters out of wood and send them out to be machined out of stainless or aluminum. Might have to lengthen the battery cables, or some other nits and frits. No big deal. The only thing I am worried about is the seat. I don't know what the 6th gen seat will look like up against the 5th gen tank. Worst case senario I'll use the very front few inches from the 5th gen seat pan and the remainder of the 6th gen. Maybe send it to sargent to be done up. I haven't gotten that far, I was just curious about the bags.

Thanks. I think you can grind down the whole thing hanging down except for the arm part with the hole in it. I don't want any passengers, and I really dig the clean look.

If you're ditching the passenger pegs, you might want to make sure you get the rear seat cowl. You'll have to have the grab bars left on though, unless you think of something really clever.

Yeah I def. want the cowl. I forgot you 6th gen. guys use the grab rails with the cowl. What does the bike look like without the bags installed but with all the brackets? I bet with the cowl on and the shaved peg holders it still looks good. Those wingrack things for the fifth gen are so big and have bars going all over the place.
I have to source a used tail section. I'm going to paint the bike, so I just need a straight subframe, decent plastic and a good clear light. I can pick up a 6th gen sargent and maybe KK's fender kit. MIGHT, even plurge on the twin staintunes. I know they must cost a fortune beacuse the single 5th is like 500....
Should probably get the bags first so I can paint them too... Anybody know if the bags are the same with the same hardware brackets from 02-08?
btw, dutch, that looks real good what you did. Let me ask you, did you paint your pegs, and exhaust shield with that speckled black color? I thought all the 6th gens had frame gray pegs, is the Asphalt color scheme different besides the plastics?

Count me OUT! on that one. My absolute fear of high places would make it "no fun for me"!! A person could fall off that road. LOL - at least thats what my brain tells me. If it was in the trees well thats different. :rolleyes:

The brackets are simple black round bar, you can see them, but they don't stick out. And the cowl looks fine with the grab rails.. THe grab rail is nice, I use it all the time to turn sideways and grab one to strech.
Only picture I have of the bike with out the bags and the cowl on. But you can just see them over the muffler
