Question For Those Who've Installed K&n Air Filter On 6th Gen.

After 25k miles I finally changed my air filter. I installed a K&N unit, but I have a question.

For those of you who have also installed a K&N, were you able to get the airbox lid to seat against the airbox base, or was the filter sandwiched between these two parts?

I was unable to get the airbox parts to mate, but it seems that with the K&N, that's the way it's supposed to be, as it appears to be sealed using the rubber frame of the air filter as a gasket/o ring.

...and for the record, my old filter was TRASHED, and I can actually feel a difference in the the way the bike runs; crisper it seems.

Yeah, I couldn't get mine completely closed either. I removed the old gasket that was in there, so the K&N fit into the now-vacant seal groove... but it's too tall to screw the lid all the way down. I've had it on there for over 20k and haven't noticed any ill effects.

Ha! Great timing. I just swapped out my filthy K&N (which I'll get around to cleaning eventually) for a BMC on Sunday. When I opened the airbox I didn't notice any gap (the gasket was still in there). After installing the BMC, there is just a smidge of bright red which can be seen on the side. I said F it since I had to install the front and tail cowls and it was getting colder, darker and windier (I don't have a garage). Figured I'd ask the fine folks here...

Anyone have similar experience with a BMC?

I installed a BMC on mine and can see some red around the seal. The only ill effect I have found is the flapper valve is more pronounced. I plan on a "fix" for that soon.

Muff

Come to think about it, should I remove the factory seal from the box?

Remove the stock gasket from the top and the bottom of the air box.

Roger that! By the way, who's Roger? Noticed the same thing but she didn't blow up yet, must be ok! Hope it's only flowing air.

On a 6th gen and a K&N there will be a gap between the top and bottom even with the old seal removed. This is normal. We have had this discussion and they are all the same. The K&N seal is just thicker. No worries, it seals great.

You know it was supposed to be changed around 12,000 , you went double the interval

In my area, seems 15,000 works , I just replace one with 16 thousand, with an old one with only 12 on it. I got a chain to buy so da filter gotta wait

I found the same thing when I did my K&N swap. I've since modded the stock filter frame with UNI foam & am going to try that out soon!

+1. Take off both OEM gaskets and the K&N will fit just fine. I just cleaned and recharged my K&N Saturday afternoon. Since I ride enough that I'd have to replace the OEM air filter annually, the K&N will practically pay for itself over a few years. :fing02:

BTW, I kept my old gaskets even tho I'll probably never need them again.

What a timely post.
I installed a K&N 10 days ago. Mine fit the same as yours did.(with a small gap) I tighten it down as best I could and let it go.

Now, for the effect of the new filter. Dam*it man
. In the cool air of spring it feels like I just added 10hp's. It pulls like a tractor and just wants to keep goin'.
I don't know if it is all from the K&N or due in part from me loosing 35 lbs since Jan 15th.

As BR says with each 7 lbs you gain 1HP.
So it does feel like I've gained 10HP's

I did the same thing...old filter out & K&N in. Tighten the screws and ride on. I totally noticed a change in hp/torque. I didn't know if it was because of the new air filter, or the new plugs I put in, or both...but it runs better than ever now. Don't sweat the small stuff like the gap...it'll work fine.
