I just purchased an brand new (0 original miles) 2007 VFR 800 with the Red, white and Blue paint scheme.
Put about 400 miles on it so far,
and I'm getting a lot of abrasion wear on my front fairing just below the mirrors.
Also on the leading edges of the rear fairings.
By wear I mean the paint is being worn down to metal.
Anybody else have this issue?
I'm taking it back to the dealer at 600 miles and want to know how much I should yell at them.
The only places I've had paint wear on my Italian Red '04 VFR are where there's been stupidity on my part at play. Like leaving the rear seat bag's straps on the bike without the bag, so they wore on the paint as they hung to the sides of the seat. Or where I dropped it in a parking lot (ego bruising, that) and scratched the paint very slightly on one front fairing.
I've pretty much come to terms with the idea that in another eight years, if I still have this bike, I'll be repainting it to fix all the scrapes and scratches. And at that point, I plan on a color change as well!
Covers are the biggest culprit I've seen about wearing the paint off of the edges of body work. I have a good friend that has a 1978 Corvette, black and silver Indy pace car edition and the car only has 78 miles on it. Every sharp edge on the body work has paint worn down to the primer. It is just from moving the car around in his garage and having the cover chaffe the paint. I also had a cover for a new camaro I had years ago, same thing was happening to that. Covers, bras, and the like are worse for the paint than leaving them exposed. - and the "clear" bras? What a bunch of crap. First off you have the stupid line across the hood when they are new, then as they age they turn nasty shades of yellow and brown. I have a neighbor that had the super 3M stuff applied just 3 years ago to his Z-06 and it already turned colors on him. Now he just had to have it scraped off and was charged more than repainting the hood would cost. :mad:
You may or may not have a cover but as you can tell, I've seen some bad stuff come out of using them.
Just curious, do you happen to use a bike cover?? Please note, that some bike covers are abrasive enought that constant shifting on the bike from wind WILL put some wear on your paint on the high areas of the fairings, specially if you park the bike in a windy area with a cover on all day.
Paint just doesnt wear down that fast unless there is a defect or if you do ride conditions and in areas where you encounter a lot of sand in the wind.
VFR's are pretty tough in this respect, my girlie often scuffs the sides with her boots when jumping on and off but the marks just scrub clean.. The Triumph Sprint I had well.. that's another story but lets just say all you had to do is look at it and the paint would peel.

Yeah a cover in windy conditions will eventually sand down the contact points especially if the bikes' surface is dirty/dusty to begin with.
The seat cowl can rub the rear cowl as can the passenger handles at the mounting points. Those along with the lower V area right behind the front wheel are the only spots I've had paint come off either of my previous 6 gens.

No factory Honda paint has every had any paint issues, especially in 400 miles unless it's a rattle can repaint with watercolor. :laugh:
I was thinking the same thing with the paint "being worn down to metal".

I have met Kerry Livgren twice (writer of Dust in the Wind and Carry On, among others). He lives just south of Topeka. Talked with him at length the second time.
He is very cool. A great big, 'ol teddy bear. He flies a powered parachute around town. (which is how I came to meet him... through EAA)
He takes a huge amount of pride in the fact that several of his songs will live long beyond him. But he is still very humble and down to earth... except when he is above it in his powered chute.
He has lived the very good life... but found it wasn't for him. He is back to his roots now, where he is comfortable.
Last year when Kansas played with the Topeka Symphony, the auditorium was packed. And yes, there were a LOT of Kansans singing Dust in the Wind.

You don't post up a location, which can provide info about the environment you are in. As far as "wind abrasion" It would pretty much wear the front surfaces where pressure is high and since I have never seen "wind abrasion" on the 9 second drag bikes my buddy builds and runs, I'd say BS if I was a dealer and you came into my dealership. BTW, over 2000 miles on my RWB with no wind abrasion or wearing of the paint anywhere. Also, why no pics of your wind abraded paint? Glad to see you are leaving. In over 20 years of practice I had criminal defendant clients come up with more believable stories about why the guy clearly seen on the video tape was not them. Party on dude. :squid:
Unless you're flying the space shuttle, it isn't just the wind. I was on jets in the USAF for years and we came back home with full paint everytime. Something else is going on...

And in closing I'm at 11,600 and the only paint issues are from my dum ass on a slow speed drop.
So let's see some good pics of this "paint wind abrasion" already so we can give you our best opinions on it.
With such low miles on your bike, you had to have been riding through many bad desert sandstorms to get any wind and sand caused damage to your new bike's paint. remember, you have to go through the clearcoat first before you might even see some damage to the pigment layers,and that's a significant amount of wear. You can't blame people here for being skeptical, unless you might be able to back up your post with some good pics of the damage.
I only have 4300 miles on my bike and have some paint abrasion on the gas tank from not realizing I put the tank bag back down wrong after filling up with gas. Boy did that piss me off. Should I be mad at the Honda for this? I don't think so. It was my own damn fault.
If you ride behind me and I have a really bad case of gas, I guarantee that when I let a few go it will peel the paint off of your bike. Maybe he was riding behind me and didn't realize who I was or something.

+1 on wanting to see a pic of the bad paint. If the paint is coming off I think the bike should be seen by the dealer ASAP. I think that kind of paint loss could happen in a desert/windy region, but only after years. The headlight glass would also be pitted.
BTW, I have 33k on my '04 no issues with the paint, other than a couple minor scratches (one drop) and some rub marks on the tail section from bungees.

Hey Rough rider, it wasn't meant as a personal attack. We pride ourselves on keeping all the BS, flame wars, etc off this site - that includes calling someone stupid. The O.P. has all of two posts, and I highly doubt that comments like yours will get him to come back to the site.
We don't all have thick hides, so please try to only joke with people here after you've had a chance to meet them, or at least exchanged enough posts with them to understand if you're going to offend them or not.
I've never heard of the paint coming off, but, I've been surprised by some other problems people have had here, so I try to keep an open mind. Hopefully this guy's issue isn't what it looked like at first glance, but we'll all try to help him figure out the real issue if in case he does have something going on.
