I've Got An 8 Spoke Wheel Coming... ...what To Do...?

Well, this is one of those things that you just never seem to have the money for, especially because it's not necessary...

...but there are some things you just have to have...

So thanks to a member on this board, I have this coming to me (and I'll be broke for a month):

The bend in my current rim provides no vibration or ill effects; it's been 20,000 miles since I hit that pothole... But I'm using it as justification; besides, my birthday is just around the corner... :cool:

...and I did just turn 30,000 miles the other day...

...anyway...

I found a somewhat local powdercoating company and will probably have it coated black while leaving a deeper portion of the lip left polished.

The coater said black would cost about $75. That's not bad.

I'll probably run it uncoated for a couple weeks until I decide what to do.

The front wheel will be redone to match the rear eventually.

Post up your wheels, I have a blank slate here, what are your suggestions?

If you guys don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your 8 spokers? At first I didn't like them as much as the stockers, but I do now.

Her name is Roxy... Good pup.

I never really considered fixing the bent rim, as it never really bothered me. But it is probably an easy fix, as it's just the lip on the right side that's bent. I was pretty well leaned over around a nice right hander when that hole appeared.

I paid $325 shipped. Figure another $100 to make it look like I want. Maybe I'll clean up and sell the old rim to try to get a return on my little project here...

Two recently sold on eBay for $250-$325

You can't go wrong with either shade of the oem Gold, especially on Red.

I had a red dobe, Murphy Brown!

I have had mc wheel in PA ( I think) straighten wheels for me before. They do a great job, looks like they have a $100 rim special...might be worth it! If you have two rims, you can have a snow tire put on one for winter! :goofy:

I paid about $200 but that was 4-5 years ago, plus $150 or so to pc the original gold to black.

Most gold wheel colors look to "blingy" for me. Honda's choice is closer to a bronze or sand tone and I like it on the RCBVFR:

I'll post up a pic of mine tomorrow when I pick it up from the powder coater. I paid 65 per wheel and he did the prep work.

Maybe I did...

Been looking for some time myself and ran across one on eBay and after 6 weeks of drama with the seller I finally received mine for $191.77.

I am thinking though I am just going to paint it gloss black to match the front on my 4th gen. It was good enough for the stock wheel :)

Nope, the 4th Gen is the only SSSA with the 5 inch rim. The 3rd (8-spoker), 5th, & 6th all have the 5.5 inch wheel.

The bronze color looks good to me. I'm thinking about buying an 8-spoke rear wheel someday, but I'm doing suspension mods first, then maybe new after-market exhaust cans. :)

Is there any performance advantage or is it strictly a bling thing?

The 8-spoke "feels" lighter, but I just put them on my bathroom scales (which reads in 1/2 pound increments) and they both display 13.5.

It's a 4th gen. VFR whose rear came off a 6th gen. VFR and whose front and sides came off a CBR.

It doesn't get any better than a 8 spoke white powdercoat wheel on a RWB Anniversary Edition

Member Toe Cutter from VFRW boards has turned his RWB into a thing of beauty by replacing the stock wheel with a white 3rd Gen wheel. I'm seriously considering this on my own bike since I have an extra 8 spoke from my 93 parts bike. Here is a pic of Toe Cutter's bike.

AKA the RCBVFR. Since this pic, it also has RC51 front end suspension and a severly rashed left side. :( Soon to be fixed tho'. :fing02:

Foto, were those forks from the VTR? Do you have a thread write up on the original conversion? (I know a guy looking to upgrade his 4th gen front end.)

No, those pictured are F4i (forks, triples, clip ons, fender) utilizing VFR wheel and rotors. Brakes are gixxer1000 but F4i can be used, of course.

Local guy in NC fixes bent wheels for $75 a wheel. I've seen his work and couldnt tell where it was repaired.

I think I paid about that for mine I got in the spring. It is at the straightener at the moment, and then I want to colorize it. Thinking about a copper look.

What does Honda use? Paint?
I'm not sure what is on the wheel now, but it has been re-colored black.

Powder is the best way to go for wheels. It's electrostatically mated to the wheel, so it's very durable and resistant to wear and tear.

WTB- oem 5 spoke rear wheel cheap
I want to buy an extra rear wheel so I can run one soft tire I save and one hard tire I commute to work on.

Where is the best place to find the 8 spoke wheel, I LOVE IT!!!! the wheels from the VFR400 don't have the spots for the lug nuts. Which wheel am i really looking for here and does anyone currently manufacture them, or is it luck of the draw on finding an old one?

Indeed it is, check here and ebay. Run a search on here, you'll find plenty of info on which wheels fit which gens. Basically, gens 3, 5, and 6 use 5.5 inch wheels and gens 4 use 5 inch wheels, requiring a narrower tire.

very cool but why did they have to engrave or cast the arrows on the rim?? maybe just inside where the tire would hide the arrows......

I got mine for $250 on fleabay about a month ago... the guy had a buy it now price on it.
I like the gold color and am thinking about re powdercoating the 8 spoke in the gold and doing the front to match. I think it would look pretty sharp.

So, I have a beautiful original 1993 VFR Fridge. I also just got an Asphalt 2004 VFR800A.

I was trying to get an undertail or high-mount exhaust for my '93 to show off the gorgeous 8-spoker. never got there, and have a large Two Brothers C5 carbon muffler on there, right now. Looks OK.

My plan was to sell the '93, since the '04 should be more modern, newer, yadda yadda. but, I am having serious doubts about the look of the rear wheel on the Gen 6 and if the '04 is "good enough" to make me really get rid of the 1993 that still holds up well in comparison.

If the '93 rear wheel and the '04 are the same width, i feel very inclined to swap them both, and have the 5-spoker '04 wheel powdercoated white for the '93 to go to sale, and keep the 8-spoker, maybe going to a charcoal grey like the wheels on my Volvo 850R for the 2004 VFR.

I'd just say screw it and send ME the 8 spoke for free! You don't need it and if asked nicely I may even cover the shipping!!!

I powder coated mine black. Haven't put a tire on it yet. Waiting for the stock rims tire to wear out. Looks great on my garage wall. 8 spoke is slightly heavier that the orig. 5th and 6th gen rear wheel. Not sure the exact wts. It is definately a looks thing. It's purty-er.

I found a powdercoater that is right next to my normal bike shop. the shop will pop the tires off the wheels for $5 per and replace for $10, off the bike. good by me.

It will be $90/hr to sandblast the OEM rims. Can we confirm that as delivered it is paint on the wheels and not factory powdercoat?

Application of color, including the materials, will be $100 per wheel. So, for $400 I should be able to swap wheels between my bikes, and have nice new finishes on both.

I wonder if I could buy a 1990-93 8-spoker for less than that and have it coated? Then I'd have a spare wheel, as well. Hmm, considerations.

I also love the look of the 8-spoker. I suppose if Honda produced them it might make them less cool, but since they stopped making the VFR800 it doesn't matter.

Hmm, I've been drooling over a stock wheel for a long time now.

My 8-spoker just doesn't do it for me the way the 5 spoke does.













I wonder if I can have the 8 spoke melted down and recast as a 5 spoke wheel?

Yes.

The 8-spoker has hub cutouts to let it clear exposed nuts on the inside of the cush drive (holding the brake rotor on). It mates up with the Gen 6 swingarm just fine, as it is flush in those areas.

The reverse is not true. A Gen 6 rear wheel needs to be ground down to clear those bolts, or the bolts need to be replaced, if fitting a later wheel to a Gen 3 bike.

I had the 8-spoker from my '93 on my Gen 6 for a week, to see how I liked it. I moved the original 8-spoker back to the older bike, because the '93 was unrideable until I machined the 2004's wheel down,which I didn't do.
