It was a good day

Today was a good day. i finally wrapped up polishing my back wheel. it was a bitch, mainly because i didnt really have any clue how to go about doing it. i was told different things by everyone i talked to. everything ranging from, "just pull the paint off with aircraft stripper and it will be polished underneath" to "wet sand it with 80 grit and that will make it polished"... lol what a joke. :goofy:
well after many weekends of lackluster results, today turned out great!:biggrin:
i also spotted a pretty tight cbr600rr, probably an 04, give or take a year. bike looked cool, but the owner either did not know how to speak english, or was a d-bag... lol

The CBR is an 03 I believe. IIRC they went to radial mounted front brakes in 04...

Takes all of 5 minutes and removing 4 bolts and it cleans the look up a ton IMHO!!!

i will probably just keep polishing it... once you get it to this stage, polishing it is just as easy as cleaning it. :biggrin:

kinda thinkin about it, but then the center stand would be useless. if i had a lot of spare time and a garage i would ditch the center stand and passenger pegs, and pick up a set of wheel stands, but as a daily driver it would make maintainance a bitch...

your bike does look really good without the pegs. you never ride with passengers?

And BTW that 6th gen looks SWEEEEETTT without the passenger peg assemblies. I've never seen that before....it looks very ducati-ish...I dig it! :fing02: :fing02:

yeah the thing about the pegs is i have the 2 bros with the dummy can.
the left can is a dummy and it is held on by the left peg...
maybe ill pull them off tomorrow, take some pics, and see what you guys think.
but theres always the question about how to put the bike up on the center stand with out the passenger pegs... :comp13:

How would removing the passenger footpeg assemblies render the centerstand useless? I can easily get my bike on the centerstand without them or passenger grab handles.

I agree that not having a centerstand would make maintenance a little more difficult (unless you've got wheelstands, of course.)

I still use my center stand all the time. I just grab on the the bracket on the sub frame that the passenger pegs attach to when I put mine on the center stand. :fing02:

it was simple as this... (simple lol)
remove powder coat with air craft coating remover
remove die casting ridges with 120 grit sanding sponges
remove 12o grit scratches with 320 grit sanding sponges
wet sand with 400 grit wet sand paper
wet sand with 600 grit wet sand paper
800 grit wet sand paper
1000 grit wet sand paper
1500 grit wet sand paper
2000 grit wet sand paper

at this point the wheel still looks only okay

then i hit it with some heavy duty turtle wax rubbing compound
then turtle wax polishing compound

at this point the wheel is looking pretty damn good

finally i brought the pain...
meguiar's mag & aluminum polish

at this point you say to your self wtf is the point of chrome? lol

im sure that there are other ways that work better and faster.
you could probably skip a few steps.
i would be interested in hearing from those that have polished successfully, what steps they used...

my bike is a little harder to get on and off the center stand than most, because i have lowered it an inch.
im thinking about raising it back up, being that im more comfortable on her now...
and ive heard with a sargent seat you sit it little lower. $300 question...

What I did was to get an extra set of rear peg hangers and cut the bottom part of the off, just below the bolt holes. Then I painted them flat black. That still gives you a place to grab for the center stand plus you can still use the hard luggage hardware. There is a picture in my gallery. If you double click the pic you can get a closer look at the setup.

thats a good idea. maybe i could do that and polish it instead...
so its possible to put the bike on the center stand with just your foot and the handle bars?
i could get a sargent seat, raise the bike, and ditch the foot pegs... hmmm
