If one decided to bite the bullet and do an inverted fork install on a 6th Gen, what forks/clamps/etc - would you use? I'm looking for good forks obviously, but I want a set-up that is a fairly straight forward job - not a lot of custom machining.

Hi Pete

Sp1 triple, definitely not SP2 is bigger and wont fit. 929 or, I think, 954 upper if both gullarm like the lower then good to go.

From here it seems the world is your oyster. SP1 or SP2 forks. Even SRoyz did R1 (2004 ??)forks. The general consensus seems to be that the other inverted forks all seem to be too short for 5 and 6 Gens.

Brakes? 954 calipers with CBR 600 master for the blingy OEM gold look or if using SP1/2 then the relevant calipers and masters.

Dont forget a wheel! :wheel:

4Gens have used the full 929 front set up, triple ( upper and lower) forks, brakes and wheel.

VFRCapn has several pictures showing the difference between SP1 and SP2 forks and triples plus of course look for Robs write up for his front end. AB-OZ had a write up somewhere but is no longer available.

Mine "might" get done this winter  Im sure someone whos actually done it will be along soon http://www.vfrdiscus...tyle_emoticons/default/smile.gif

F4i forks would be a lot cheaper... just sayin'! :D

Most use the RC51 forks with '51 lower, + 929 or 954 upper. Helibars on top of the upper triple. Steering stop modification on the lower required. zroyz used R1 forks in CBR/RC triples + R1 wheel and had to make custom wheel and rotor spacers to line up the important parts.

SP1/SP2 - Please explain.

I guess what got me thinking about it was the pic Larry posted last week showing the tremendous difference in slider/fork tube overlap between conventional forks and inverted forks.

Seb: I figured if I were going to do a fork swap, I would want to go for inverted.

2000-01 RC-51= SP-1
2002-06 RC-51= SP-2

Earlier(SP-1) forks are longer than the SP-2's, making them closer to ideal for converting to our bikes. They're harder to find, however.

I got a set! But I'm using them at the moment.
Thanks for the tip, didn't know that difference. So, would I be better off getting SP2 forks for my SP1 and using those on the 5th Gen? :wheel:

The SP-2 forks were supposed to be technically superior, so if I already had a set of SP-1's I would change them out for the SP-2's and put the SP-1's on your VFR.

You might also find a good set of used Ohlins forks for your RC51 on Speedzilla.com as a replacement for the stock SP-1 set.

I have CBR929/954 upper AND lower triple clamps on my '99 VFR800 and they work just fine, so no need to spend extra time looking for an SP-1 lower for the conversion.

There is no machining necessary.
Unless you call using a dremel or side grinder to remove the steering stops on the lower triple "machining"

I've found a good RC-51 website and it seems like there is a lot of used stuff available.

There's a guy here in our classifieds selling both a SP1 & SP2 fork set. :wheel:

I was looking at 06/07 GSXR 600/750 forks,if I remember correctly they are 737 mm long which is pretty good and the lower tree looks to be very close to being usable as is and I'm pretty sure the lower bearing is the same. Just need to see if someone make a upper bearing with the gsxr ID & honda OD.
I was very impressed with them as a stock fork and they come stock with 1.0 kg springs(750) so it should be just about perfect on a VFR.
Unlike the RC51 stuff, these things are everywhere and cheap!

I have a set, but haven't got around to taking the project any further.
