Ram stem mount on 6trh Gen

I'm trying to install my Ram stem mount on my 07 RWB. I noticed that the stem tube is much wider than the Ram mount. They show it with tighter fitting stem tubes and they cut the piece to fit. But it just wiggles in the tube on the VFR. So what should I do to ensure a tight fit? What did any of you guys use?

Seeing as that didn't work as planned, I installed the brake reservoir Ram mount for now. I'm going to use that one for my camera. I want to use the stem mount for my Zumo.

It's nothing special, but here's pics of the reservoir mount. I used my iPhone so I apologize if the quality isn't up to snuff.

BTW the spacers go between the mount and the reservoir cap. :rolleyes:

If the Stem Stand is loose it's not the Right one unless there's no O-rings on it! :unsure:

Thanks, BR. I'll admit I'm not that mechanically inclined. But I only found 1 size of the Ram stem mount, part # B-342U. I watched a YouTube video from GPS city showing the installation. There's shows the mount going about halfway down or less. It goes all the way on the VFR. Is there another one?

And thanks for the heads up on the spacers. I'll fix it tomorrow. :blush:

There's only one size that I know of. I had the same problem as you are having. I didn't use the spacers and bought stainless bolts to replace the stock bolts that were a bit larger than stock and smaller than the ones that came with your kit. It is very tight and has been on for a couple of thousand miles with no issues. Additionally I think it looks better w/o the spacers... Here's the best pic I have on it right now...

My stem mount fit very tight on my 5th Gen. I also have reservoir mounts on both reservoirs for my GPS and Sirius radio. I stopped using my stem mount because no matter how I positioned my equipment, it always blocked my gauges/idiot lights. I like to be able to see them at a glance and not have to look around or over my GPS or whatever to do so. Just my personal preference.

I got the stem mount done today and corrected the reservoir mount (thanks BR). It took a bit of muscle to get it tight, because the stem tube is so wide. But I got it nice and tight. Knife, I don't have that problem on the 6th gen as far as blocking gauges/lights.

I have the older style RAM Stem mount on my bike. It is friction fit and tightens with a hex screw that expands a big rubber grommet(????). I bought it when I had my 2002 VFR. It came in 2 sizes at the time I believe, 13mm and 19mm. The 19mm is the one that fits the steering stem hole on the 2002-2009 VFR800. I do not think they make this style anymore. If you need pictures let me know.

Stan, my mount is the same type, but they only come in one size now. It's tapered so it fits a variety of stems, but it took a lot of cranking to get it to fit tight on the fat tube of my VFR.

I guess it would have made more sense if I had mentioned that I have a rather tall tank bag, so I have to use the long RAM mount arm for my GPS, which then blocks my view of the gauges. That's why I use the reservoir mounts instead. Yours looks good, by the way!

Yeah, that makes sense now, Knife, with the large tank bag. I'm not a fan of large tank bags myself. I have a very small one I use sometimes just to carry stuff like my wallet, phone, keys. etc. Then I have a medium size one I used to use to bring a change of shoes to work in. But now that I have the hard bags (though not mounted yet) I don't think I'll be using the tank bag that much. Even if I do, I've got room to raise the Zumo by straightening out the arm. Right now it's flat, as you can see.

PS, with the Zumo, I don't need the extra satellite radio receiver, just the additional antenna. I have a subscription to Sirius, and I'll have check to see if that will work, now that XM and Sirius are one.

I'm ordering one of the RAM mounts and need to know what length everyone is using? The 1.75 seems to be the obvious choice?

Sorry Ripper, I haven't been on since I got out of work earlier. So I didn't see your post until now. To answer your question, the short one will yes. That's what I have in my pics. It came with the Zumo. And you can see that I've got it almost perfectly horizontal, with no vertical rise at all other than the mount. If you use a big tankbag, you might want a longer arm.

On the stem ram mount. I recommend NOT to use rubber plug and instead run a longer bolt all the way to the bottom with washers/nut for a more secure mount. I've had mine with the plug for years and the grip of the plug constantly changes. When the frame is cold, its tight to a certain point, but when the frame heats up, the rubber becomes loose. I have the plug expanded as far as it can go and I still get movement. I just don't put anything heavy on it. I use the front tank ram mount for the gps.

Gotcha, makes sense to run a solid mount through the whole stem.

I just installed one of these over the winter. It sucks! it's in their but it's tight and loose at the same time (won't fall out but wiggles). I've going to go to O'Reilly Auto Parts and get like a rubber expanding dust plug that's size to the hole and use that because the universal thing just doesn't work well at all. the other thing i thought was funny is they have a loop for a lock on the waterproof box but the stem that attaches it to the knob on the bike has a wing nut for tightening it into position, what would stop someone from just loosing that and taking the whole box? I did a Homer DOH! when I realized that. a side from all of that it's made from good materials, and I'd recommend them with caution.

Question, If one wanted to connect a power cable to a switched power source... Where would I want to do this?

I just connected mine directly to the battery. You just have to remember to turn the GPS off when you turn the bike off.
