ABS in a 5th Gen?

Okay - I'm not sure I even want to do this but what would it take (other than a decent amount of $s) to put ABS in my dear old 5th Gen? I'm ASSuming the best way would be to take 6th Gen ABS parts and fab/mod to a 5th Gen? Keep in mind that we don't have ABS 6th Gens in Oz - so I'd need ship whatever parts from elsewhere.

No posts about whether it's the right thing to do or not - let's just assume it's a good thing. Okay BLS?

I'm not sure how similar the front ends are on the bikes, IE if the 6th gen wheel w/ABS sensor would fit, or if you'd have to do a full fork swap. After that, the lines run "FAIRLY" similarly. Would take some tweaking to get the ABS module in there. Then you'd have to swap the rear rotor to get the sensor ring. Not sure if that'd just bolt up either.


I am absolutely certain you could do it. Probably not in a weekend though. I bet there are enough small differences between the two bikes, that it would be a multi-stage process, overcoming one minor (but critical) difference at a time.

I'm sure someone else can answer the questions about the swapability of the 5th-6th brakes.

Find someone who can hook you up with a 5th gen Japanese Police VFR - they had ABS.

Are the ABS calculations done in the main ECU? If they are you're out of luck. There would be lots of computer issues.

I don't think they would be. It wouldn't be logical. Honda would either need to make two different ECUs (which I have not heard of them doing for the 6th), or put overly advanced ECUs in 2/3rds of the VTECs they sent out.

I'm fairly certain the ABS module (computer/pump) works independently of the main ECU. I don't believe there is any correlation between our throttles and brakes.

That makes sense. However, It would still need power to the ABS module, and I do know you can't just plug an 05 ECU into an 06 wiring harness, so I doubt you'd be able to simply plug in a 6th gen ABS wiring harness.

Interesting, this might be doable...

Simplest method methinks would be to have a complete wrecked ABS bike on hand, harvest all the necessary parts, make the mods to the 5th gen and integrate the system, then sell the rest of the unneeded bits off.


It would be a TREMENDOUS undertaking, and at the end of the day, I think it'd be easier to shoehorn a 5th gen geardrive motor into a 6th gen chassis with ABS already onboard.


BTW, the 5th --> 6th engine swap has already been done 1x that I know of.

Judging by that pic, it has different length forks and a specialized triple.

Also, I wonder what those two black items are next to the dash panel but still behind the windscreen? Additional emergency lights?

You'll need a whole lot of donor parts from a 6th gen ABS model. Someone on here is parting one out now, you may be in luck.
You'll need rotors, calipers, sensing units, control modules, and have to figure out a way to hook it all up.

But with enough time and money...

In my mind I heard OB1 from Star Wars -> "Luke, Luke, don't be a halfwit, it would be a TREMENDOUS undertaking, buy a 7th Gen Luke, they're strange looking but at least they've got ABS ..."
But really, thx to everyone for your input, I'm not ready to give-up yet - might download a 6th Gen ABS shop manual and have a good look at the system. Long-long term project - maybe!!! :rolleyes:
