vfr 800 running problem

has anybody experianced the following problem on the non-vtec vfr800 and more importantly found the route of the fault.

Bike will be running fine, but usually when it comes wet the temperature gauge will start to read lower and randomly go up and down. this will cause the bike to run poorly and eventually stop, after leaving the bike for a few minutes it will re-start and run fine for a time and then start to play up again in the same way.

I have found some reference to this problem on various forums but I can't come a cross a diagnoses, any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like an electrical fault in the wiring of the bike. Are you getting FI (also known as "MIL") codes codes on the FI light on the dashboard? It will flash in a particular sequence which tells you the number(s) which identify the faults it is detecting.

If only!!!! No Fi Faults, which basiclly means the cause of the problem is not going outside the voltage range that would give you an Fi Fault.

I suspect a fault in the loom which is where I will be heading first unless otherwise guided!

This may sound evil, but I'd consider disconnecting the ECT sensor and seeing how the engine runs. It would have to make a lot of assumptions and run in limp-home mode, but if it runs more reliably without it, that could be a neat way of tracing the problem.
