Why is the luggage so much smaller??

You'd think you'd get MORE luggage capacity with a bigger motor, no?

VFR800 side bags: 35 liter cap.
VFR800 top case: 45 liter cap

VFR1200 side bag: 29 liter
VFR1200 top case: 31 liter

Does the smaller side bags give the bike a narrower profile than the 6-gens?

Is the small tank not metal now as well?

Odd about the capacity on the 7th gen. But the K1300S has small bags! Maybe the new tour/ST version of the VFR will have bigger bags that you can also bolt on????

Those 6th gen OEM bags are one strong reason to buy one. The number one plus of the 6th over the 5th gen in my opinion.

I have softbags at about 20 liters each on my 5th gen. More room is nice but ALSO as one universal rule states.....junk expands to the room available. And I always carry too much stuff too. And I have no room left on my Wing either...crap!!!!!!

I believe the 30 L size of the bags on the 1200 is pretty normal, and as 6th gen. owner's we have higher than normal expectations, taking for granted how awesome it is to have large hardbags.

They do not do much for me.........a K1200S buddy could not get his helmet inside so he did not buy them. But literature says you can?

My wife's XXS Quantum 2 probably fits... bet mine won't though! :rolleyes: Thanks for the sizing info, didn't know they were that small.

It's inflation.... the more you pay the less you get!!!

Well, it already weighs "weigh" too much; fitting bigger panniers will further add, I guess.

Well there is the point that this is the Sport touring bike the 1200F model, not the rumored Touring 1200T. So I guess slightly smaller bags were planned. Makes me wonder what are the sizes of the FJR and c14 bags??

They certainly were a big selling point for the 6th gen, but they were not available when I bought my 5th gen. Also the Givi PLX cases were not available either at that time so it kind of drove me to get the 5th gen and givi's

It is interesting that Honda shifted the size back towards most of the other oem hard bag volumes and away from the aftermarket Givi case volumes.
I wonder if that was supposed to keep the weight down and maintain is sport status?

What do you guys take on trips? I did a 14 day cross country trip on my K12S this summer using the BMW standard side bags and a Givi 46L topcase and had zero complaints on the amount of shit I was hauling around (even had necessities like laptop, camera(s), tools, any type of charger you could dream of for batteries, laptop, cell, iPod, heated gloves and jacket, tent, sleeping bag, air matress, ...). What is it that you folks need more space for exactly?

On a side note, I may sell my K12S and LIKE the BMW expandable bags so much that I was trying to see how much work would be involved to make them fit my 5th gen VFR as I saw on this site done by another member some time back.

Woops, caught someone out in a touchy mood! I already explained that I like being able to stow my helmet in the cavernous Honda side bag - whether I'm packed to the gills on a trip or not. What the heck do some of those GS guys need the ridiculously huge aluminum boxes for? I dunno, but I don't make fun of them...

Glad you chimed in here actually, I would like to know if an XL full face helmet fits in your BMW side bags. Mine's a tight fit in the VFR bag due to the inner shell shape.

I'm thinking that you read me wrong if you found me to be attacking. Honestly I rarely care what anybody feels as it relates to my opinion, I was rather seeking comment on what the hell you guys do with more space. I suppose when I go road-tripping with my son 2 up a bit more space would be nice, but overall I don't feel short changed.

As far as the helmet in a bag, I'm not sure as the largest that I have is a large and I never tried to stow it. Normally if I go with the bags on I'm on a trip and they are otherwise occupied. Funny thing is that before buying the K-S I thought that they looked goofy and small I must admit. After having them I was hoping that Honda would release something similar (eg small but expandable) for the VFR1200 as I figure to own the bike someday and like that the bags can remain small unless you require more space.

Garden of the Gods is AWESOME. My cousin (5G VFR rider) and I hit it as well on our trip. Below are a few pics from our trip, the pics would have maybe been cooler had I taken my VFR, but I have no regrets taking the K-S when we finally were forced onto some boring riding areas (crossing Nevada to CA comes to mind here).

More space grabbers for me: I just added a chair to the list :rolleyes: On my summer tours I am now taking a cooling vest and a cooler to go with it. Plus all the electronics crap.

Seems like I always bring camping gear now which requires a lot of space as you know. I have reduced my camping packing size a bit of late with new gear. But still not a lot of cooking stuff. Anyways I am envious of all those hard bags...no matter how small.

So where is the pic of a 5th gen with the 1200/1300S bags? Are those the same bags as the BMW 800ST too?

I am not really sure what bags that the F800ST uses. If they are the grey expandable bags I would say yes they are the same as BMW is typically good with reuse.

Well that would work for me. Rather have the 6 gen bags but I have a 5th gen.

According to the thread he uses standard Givi racks with some mods.

FJR bags are roughly the same size as the VFR 800's bags...My brother has an FJR and they are very similar.

I do not have first-hand experience with these particular beemer saddlebags, but IIRC the grey sections are actually a reinforced/backed fabric.

In other words, I believe that they are not rigid panels, so I don't think that it would be possible to paint them.

Hopefully someone else can confirm.

The black pieces can be removed for painting, but as others have said I'm not sure how well paint would work here. The lid itself has a "hard-ish" feel to it. Not hard like a typical solid plastic lid, but more like a hard plastic with 1/4" of some foam-like material, with the cloth gray cover stretched over. When the bags are expanded (see the pics above on the K12S from my trip) there is a lined cloth section exposed which seems to be great as far as water resistance goes but wouldn't take paint well I don't think.

If forced to change the colors I would look into possibly a dye solution for the bags maybe.
