Racing the RV4

It is two and a half year since I started this project, the bike is at last running perfect. It turned out to be a beauty, some Forum users have asked me about the modifications done, I have tried to answer , but I have to keep my big mouth shut because it is entering a competition for the best tuner/builder bike next year.

Jon added some build pics in his gallery about 6 weeks ago that no one has really seen yet. They don't "tell all" but you do get to some more of the goodies and design. I'd post them here but I don't know how.

The cockpit a starlane "XENON S" it works after a relatively long process of calibrations...

Exhaust two in one down two in one up, manufactured by B Baldes in Bavaria Germany, it 's only a prototype in stainless steel, to tell if it works or not , a titanium will be fitted at a later stage

If you look close enough you will see the minature waterpump, the missing alternator different layout for hoses which is going to replaced with aluminum pipes, the stock radiator which is also to be changed, The Brakes are #1 I haven't had a bike with that good brakes, I can brake 50 yards later than everybody else.

A pair of those exhaust cans as used under the tail, in raw titanium, would simply be The Business on a 6th gen.

Very impressive build! I'm a little envious of the work and attention to detail that has gone into this bike.

MR sets made the Aprilia.?? Which model might that be? Yes they look spot on and stronger than the Chinese items i have purchased for my race VFR.

Single throttle cable nothing special in reality.
One cable opens the throttle, the other physically closes it. Not relying on the carb. springs alone to close the throttle.
Its a safety thing. Ok for racing as you can pit in on the clutch if throttle jams open on the next lap. Not so good on the roads as you wont be pitting in 100 miles from home.
The Ducati 916 uses a single cable as standard, but it is much shorter and does not pass round the headstock so less travel to go wrong...
Im using an HRC quick action throttle on a single cable also on VFR.

308 lbs! That works out to about 140 kilograms!

And I'm not finished with the diet! the engine still has to lose about 5 kilos, the rest of the bolts and nuts has to be replaced with titanium, I hope for 135 kilos

umm only replace 4 bolts on the covers with Ti.. use aluminum on the rest.

Have you cut down the wiring harness to remove unnecessary wires?

I started to build the second engine, it's going to be big , 900cc with special pistons and conrods, bigger valves higher valve lift, different timing lightened crank and higher compression 13.4 :1, every screw in titanium, if it doesn't 150 bhp I'll be sore!

you cant torque aluminum bolts down very well. you CAN with TI, one on the time, bottom and sides.. use aluminum on the rest .. it will have 1/2 the weight of all TI bolts..
use aluminum an all light stressed spots. its both lighter and cheaper. :fing02:
when you add up the weight of all the itty bitty bolts holding stuff on the bike its a real shocker about how many pounds it adds up to.

and YES that is how you reduce weight. :biggrin:

I think he is considering Ti vs Al as a fastener material. Would agree AL may be ok in non-stressed areas, but Ti is better for more highly loaded areas. Just thinking out loud with my ME hat.......

It's a race bike, it doesn't have lights no rear fender, special made wiring harness, but oil and water added and it tipped the scale at 140 kg (308lb)

Titanium weight about half of the similar aluminum screw , by changing the al to titanium I'll save about 2-2,5 kg on the engine and 3 kg on the frame and exhaust

i honestly think you have that revered.. i have both in my hands right now.. the aluminum bolt is clearly lighter that the TI.. in fact , every bolt i am checking ..the aluminum is lighter..
are your ti bolts hollow or something? :comp13:
not trying to be a pain in the butt.. its just that after building racing bicycle for 10 years and weighing every gram that goes on the bike.. then doing the same for motorcycles.. i want to know where your getting your suppedupperr light ti bolts. :fing02:

are you going to ego trigger happy with the diegrinder?
i have seen so much light weight stuff its nuts.. slotted buckets'
carbon valve covers, swisscheesed clamps and hand controls..
every bit of excess metal shaved off the motor ..ect ect.

I weighted the screws and bolts, on my digital scale it came out everything the same 50-60 % less weight than alu. And I'm having a hell of a time, in oct 20th I'll be in Mugello Italy racing for fun! :beer:

alum. is techinically almost half as light, by volume.. I'm sure there are other factors to consider.

Alumnium has to be an alloy to work as screws and nuts....

Just going to add my $0.02 to the discussion for correctness... Atomic Weights are based on the weight of a certain number of atoms of an element (Avogadro's number = 6.0221415 × 1023) not the density, in this case the proportions are close.
Densities:
Al = 2.712 g/cc
Ti = 4.5 g/cc
Light alloy based on Al = 2.56 to 2.8 g/cc
Light alloy based on Mg = 1.76to 1.87 g/cc
Al+Bronze alloy = 7.7 to 8.7 g/cc
(Density info taken from http://www.engineeri...ities-d_50.html)

Based on this info I would say our most excellent RV4 racer friend is comparing Al/Bronze alloy fasteners to Ti fasteners and getting his 50 - 60% lighter. I don't know if it feasible, but using a light alloy based on Mg would give the ultimate in lightweight fasteners. These are probably soft as butter or have some other drawback... anybody know? I know pure Mg will burn bright & hot once you get it hot enough...

Interesting. I'm going to try to do some extensive lightening to my 5th gen, not as light as yours, but my goal is about 170-180kg in road legal form. Picked up an SP2 swing arm and rear wheel that looks like it won't be too difficult to fit, and seems to be quite a bit lighter than the SSSA and wheel.

170kg is definately possible, even 160 if you look for carbon fairing and tailpiece

Yeah, I don't think it will be too difficult. Would like to get there without taking too much weight out of the engine and keeping ride-ability and reliability intact.

What bikes do you race with? Or are you just doing track days on it? I ask because with Wera the class it fits in is the A Class (litre bikes). In order for a VFR to be competitive w/ modern litre bikes you would have to spend 4x what a litre bike costs. That is an awesome machine you have created, thanks for showing us.

the way i see it, if I can ride well enough to be in the top class, i'll spend the money for another bike to race that class (if i was going too). otherwise, i'd keep riding the RV4 and enjoy having a blast playing with everyone during track days.

your bike rocks!!!! i would love to do a track day bike, but alas, it'll have to wait for awhile.

Please take lots of photos - you doing something I would like to try -- that is grab a 2nd 5th gen and see how far I can get the weight down.

Once I get started on it I'll try to document it as well as I can. I picked up an 03 RC51 rolling chassis a couple of weeks ago, and I plan on using both the front and rear suspension on my 5th gen. Originally I wanted to try to put the 5th gen engine in the RC51 frame, but it would require removing way too much material from the frame to work.

I know a couple of people have put SP2 swing arms on superhawks, and 5th gen swing arms have gone on those bikes as well, so I'm sure it can be done. Sorry to jack your thread hondarv4, I'll shut up now!

I took apart the second engine, and calculated that it can easily loose about 12 kg without making it to fragile, so 73 -12 makes 61 kg's 140kg's - 12 makes in my book 128kg's and with 145-155 bhp that will blast some kilobikes away (I think)
