FIRST YEAR BIKE FEARS

JUST NEED TO GET THE VFR PROS FEED BACK ON WHAT IF ANY FEARS U MAY HAVE HAD BUYING A NEW MODEL BIKE IN ITS FIRST YEAR OFF PRODUCTION I'VE GOT THE FEVER FOR THIS BIKE AND I'M REAL CLOSE TO PULLING THE TRIGGER ...ONE OF THE THINGS I LIKE BEST ABOUT MY TRUMPET IS THAT FOR THE MOST PART I CAN NEVER REALLY GET CAUGHT IN A BAD GEAR ..TONS OF TORQUE ...ANYWAY JUST LOOKING FOR SOME FEEDBACK,BE IT POSITVIVE OR NEGATIVE ABOUT THE NEW VFR HONDA HAS OUT ..THANKS IN ADVANCE PS DID ANY OF U GUYS BUY A SERVICE CONTRACT ? THAT SAYS ALOT IF U DID OR DID'NT IMHO..

I did not buy a service contract with my VFR1200F but, I am a vintage Honda motorcycle mechanic that learns quick on my new bikes.
The VFR1200F is an amazing motorcycle that will bring you many miles of fun.

I have no problem with just buying a bike and enjoying it. You shouldn't have a "New Model Phobia" about the VFR12 because it's a Honda and you get a 3 year warranty.

As for the torque - I know what you mean about the shove from the ST, but the VFR has got bags more oomph than the Trumpet in most gears and at any revs.

No I didn't buy a service contract - it's not a huge saving over the 3 years and I'd rather have the money in my bank, earning interest, than in the dealer's pocket.
The service deal was designed for people who worry about compicated V-Four engines costing a lot to maintain. As an example, my VFR first service was �105, whereas my KTM cost me �225.....
No really, it's not going to be expensive to maintain.

I am a 18 year honda auto tech. So I have seen all the new models and the problems they may have.

IMO, honda doesnt release prodeuct until it is ready. They dont get in a major hurry to release a bike, car with known problems. Most new year models dont have many problems at all, maybe a small thing here or there but not a piece of crap like some other makes.

I have owned a first year acura legend, prelude, integra, and accord, known of these had any "major" problems. The prelude got an alternater and the legend had a rattle fixed, thats about it.

I have a first year gl500 and it's a freaking bullet proof anvil.

I dont really like extended warranties or service contracts on hondas. I dont think they are good value unless somethin extreme happens. Aftermarket warranties really suck.

Extended warranties in general can not be beneficial to you by definition.
It is simple really.
Companies sell extended warranties to consumers in order to make money.
No other reason.
Now, if they're making money, guess who is losing.

Companies that don't earn a profit don't stay in business. If every company didn't make any money, WE lose. Profit is not a profane word.

Freedom is a great word. Freedom to buy, what we want, and where we want, and unfortunately, even when we don't have the money. Companies sell extended warranties because there is a demand for them. Nobody has ever been forced to buy one any more than anyone has been forced to buy a VFR or a mug of beer. :warranty: :biggrin:

it is done and she is in the garage ...damm rain and work ...just got it yesterday.. and yes rice i did go with the warranty @ $522.00 for 5 years total coverage,includes hondas 1 year comes out to bout $130.55 a year ...i'll take that deal any day ...and i know ..proof is in the photos ..i am in major pain right now ...working and not riding my new sweetheart ..... :angry:

I thought that bike came with 3 year warranty? is it aftermarket or direct Honda , if finance the cost will be closer to $1000 to break even.

I bought a warranty, but nobody would accept it, other the original dealer of purchase , Yeh its good Nationwide , but nobody will accept it. Too hard to get paid.

I did have a stator replaced at 56,000 mile , total of $586 I had a zero deductable warrnty, that didnt stop Honda from wanting $220 ... So we had a strong discussion going, then they lowered the price to $130. I started walking the chain of command at that point. I said you sold me the warranty , if the insurance company didnt pay the full bill, go back to them.

No more of that

Honda warranties are three years in the UK, but only one year in the USA. However I have a high level of confidence in Honda either way. Also, I *ride* my bikes enough that if they're defective, I am sure I could find that out within one year.

I rode a 98 for 124k miles and it was rock solid - first year model too, now I own the veefalo and its got over 6k on it now - more probably havent looked at the odo. I am saying it is more likely that another make is going to have significant problems than a Honda, and they have been pretty good at addressing the issues they do have. A few electrical problem in the 6th gen models - under charging stator and wire harness recalls. I looked at the wire harness on this new bike and its been beefed up alot, the connectors to the rectifier regulator are a total redesign - and its fitted in a well cooled spot in the wheel well of the rear tire, its a mosfet design too.

I would of been more concerned about a warranty on a Trumpet than a Honda. Just ride the wheels of that thing and enjoy - I love my 5th gen :fing02:

7k+ miles on mine, so far zero issues. I did buy the warranty....only cuz it was pretty cheap compared to the bike lol. 5 years peace of mind, yea im gonna rack up as many miles as possible :-)

I wouls never buy one ona bike thats less than $10k

there u go ..i'm with u ..abs, shaft drive, throttle by wire etc etc high tech bike and i know honda mechanics r probably like the maytag man but its like any other insurance ...i'm not going to cancel my regular insurance because i think i'm the safest driver on the road .."shit happens" and @ $133 per year and only changing my pymt $12 for three years @ honda's low rate of 1.99% ...and thats 5 years worth of coverage and yes it covers damm near everything ...exculsionary policy ...now if i could just get from behind this desk and get on top of me new darlin life would b in order .. :fing02:

Despite what many may think, Honda has had its share of reliability issues - cracking frames on Goldwings, multiple rectifier failures on several models, excessive oil burning on first-year 08 CBR 1000's etc.

I almost never buy a first-year anything until it has had its teething issues sorted out. And this VFR will not be an exception.

I must be one lucky consumer of Honda motorcycles. Other than taking an st1300 in because of mice chewing through a wiring harness......and for normal tire changes, I have never taken a bike back with problems...and I have had a bunch of them over the last 35 yrs. Hopefully I'll continue my streak with this one.

I bought the first year 6th gen VFR(2002) and it's been awesome. I've beat it for the last 77,000 miles with no issues to mention!

Yes, 1st year problems do come up with any brand bike including Hondas. Remember the stator problems with the 6th gen, and as far as I'm concerned the 4th and 3rd gens were burning up RRs since the first ones rolled out of Hammamatsu, and didn't the 5th gen have rear subframe cracking problems (or was that the 6th gen) and the mysterious dash melting thing? That's just how vehicles are, not everything can be caught in pre-production testing. So don't worry about it too much or you'll end up not buynig or riding any brand new bike for good.

I know you didnt specifically ask about the DCT version but a racer/ test rider for American Honda was relating a story of his first ride on a DCT Honda...3 years ago on a retrofitted CBR XX Blackbird. :blink:

He has been trashing that transmission for 3 years and countless miles. Many of the American Honda guys at the Santa Barbera model intro were telling "sea stories" (as we sailors call them) of having to flog CBRs aroung the test track in excess of 140 mph for 24-36 hours straight because Honda thought there may have been a issue that slipped through on a vendor part or some such nonsense...I don't recall the details because I was just spinning the wheels in my mind trying to figure out how to wrangle my dream job in a down global economy. :beer:

So to answer your initial question, I would not hesistate to buy a first year model Honda motorcycle as much as I would to buy a new iPhone...or many other technologies...

now post up some pics and quit whining about not being able to ride her yet. :goofy:
