rebuilding a 5th gen viffer: a love story?

picked up a '99 VFR from a relative for a good price. she had been low sided by one of her ex-boyfriends and left to sit for a couple of years. 's ok, i have zip ties and i ain't skeered! this is a reposting from another general rider forum i am a member of here in the pnw. the good: corbin seat pc2 2 bros can tires look pretty fresh she RUNS!(and sounds frickin' brutal) the bad: left front rotor definatley bent not sure about the right possibly wonked front rim possible fork damage(initial visual seems ok) possible steering head damage(initial visual seems ok) front brake lever needs replacing left foot peg needs replacing right front signal seems to be gone. the ugly: need to bend the rear brake lever back into position replace or bend the the right passenger set back. pull the exhaust off the wheel right lower fairing is gonna need a s*** ton of paint and screen doors left lower fairing isnt as bad, but will need some love upper fairing is cracked pretty good fairing stays will need some massaging. gonna need a s*** ton of wire ties and pleanty of cheap beer to bring her back. http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/a6fe869b.jpg?t=1283530396 http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/95ad1571.jpg?t=1283731026 just kinda taking an inventory. http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/118d4e9a.jpg?t=1283731087 front fairings stripped. http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/b611f202.jpg?t=1283731135 def wonked. http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/3b29d999.jpg?t=1283731171 looks to have clearance betwixt the pipes and the swing arm. so it would appear the rear set took the brunt. http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/05b8e91f.jpg?t=1283731303 don't have a stand, but i have rafters and ratchet straps! the rim has a minor taco on the right side, but it would be a Bad Thing™ at speed! and oddly enough the left rotor is bent. i would have thought it would be the right side given the damage to the rim. makes me really wonder what the fuck he did to it. some where after i took all the plastics and wonked bits off, but before i pulled the rim, i needed to hear it run. unfortunately the iphone mic sucks and clips on the sound...a lot! http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt349/metricinch/viffer/485f6466.jpg?t=1284049355 idn't get much done last night. went Mary Shelley on the windscreen. and put the cockpit back together. edit: was asked to clean up the pg-13 language. please note that i did look in the hand book and didn't see a ruling on harsh language. i understand that this may be an un-written rule, but for us noobs, the powers that be might want to think about adding it as a written rule. keeps us from hurting any feelings, and keeps the mods from having to enforce nebulous guidelines. :)

How do you remove a broken easy out? Those this are very hard to drill out!!!

i gave up. perhaps another day when i am feeling ambitious i will get some small cobalt bits, some cutting oil, a sixer of modelo and give it another go!

yeah, in this case a grinder won't fit. i should have skipped the ezout and gone straight to drilling the whole damn thing out!

yeah, i am liking the look too, especially on the wind screen. lets you know she has been in the shit, and lived to tell the tale.

as for the riding, or lack there of, it is gonna be a complete 180 from my normal style of riding. my other bike is a KLR with just about every mod imaginable. so i am gonna have to remind myself that i can't hop curbs to go around busses and such. but it is killing me not being able to ride her, i just know she is gonna be a riot!

Use a Dremel with the pointy green stones. I broke a steel bolt off in a motor mount on the motor for my 83 restoration, then broke the ez-out off. Took a while(and a few bits), but I did get it out. :fing02:

I'm amused that your pooch found the need to sniff at your new project - let's hope the hind leg wasn't lifted after this shot was taken :blush:

Looks like a worthy project overall - you could spend all kinds of $s buying new or second-hand bits but I reckon the "Mary Shelley" rectifications are cool anyway :cool:

she sniffs everything, but since she isn't a dog, she doesn't pee on my stuff. this is exactly why i only own bitches. i tried a dog once, and he peed on everything, including my vaccum cleaner! :angry:

i bet i could spend a ton of coin on her, and she will probably end up having some spent on her, but it is going to be little bits at a time, and only after she is back on the road! yeah, i was thinking of doing some kind of epoxy type repair, but figured, naw, zip ties are easier!

When you do get her back to a riding state let me know & maybe we can get together, Yes the zip tie method is stronger than glueing/epoxy quicker too!
