its how to time!!
first in series of writes ups! grab your tools and fill up your coffee pot!!

on my way home to maryland from RI.. i picked up dennis's bike.. so i had 2 VFRs in my astro! :bliss:
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00381.jpg
this bike has an exhaust stud busted and i will be doing a write up on that tomorrow..
in anycase..
depairng the vfr750.. why? why not? you remove 4 lbs of junk.. in this case,.. rusted out junk.

the body and tank are removed to to do all the stuff at once.. that includes a valve check , new stock pipes/stud removal , repainting of the side covers, the R/R grounding i keep yammering about

i put the bike on the lift and raised the rear up high enough to get to everything and be able to remove the pipes.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00392.jpg

first... remove the 2 thick tubes in front of the airbox and replace with rubber caps .. red in lower pic
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00418.jpg
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00434.jpg
trace the tube down to the pair unit.. and unbolt it from the frame. ..the left side bolt is also a motor mount bolt. so put it back in! :fing02:
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00417.jpg
trace the thin rubber tube up to the intake on the motor and pull it off the brass fitting.. remove the brass fitting and replace with a screw taken from the pair unit. do the back 2 brass fittings while your at it.
you CAN leave the fittings and put on caps. but rubber dries out.. this is a long term fix.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00421.jpghttp://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00422.jpghttp://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00429.jpg
trace the chrome tubes around the motor and remove the 2 10mm bolts holding each in place.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00414.jpghttp://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00416-1.jpg
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00415.jpg
some people use billet block off plats.. but this is a fast and free(if you have a welder)
cut the tubes off the flange end and weld up the hole :idea3:
paint black with high temp paint and reinstall! presto! you have depaired your bike and remove lots of crap!
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00424.jpg
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00431.jpg

all this..
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/gll429/IMG00423.jpg

replaced with this little bit!!!

Good work, but you might want to put that brass nipple under the carb boot back in - isn't that one of the connection points for the carb sync tool?

A 1000R AND a VFR750 in the back of the van? I bet the Astro was ready to :wheel: :goofy:

After depairing my bikes I have intalled brass nipples in those ports and some vacum line and two tees (connect the front and back left and the front and back right together) so that I can fog the motor nice and easy for those long winters.

Nice writeup. Please excuse my lack of knowledge here, but what exactly is the purpose of the pair unit in the first place? If it's not necessary, why's it there to begin with?

Isn't it better to do that via the spark plug holes, since some of the intake vales could be closed? Or do you kill the spark and turn the motor over while spraying?

It introduces fresh air to the exhaust port, to help burn off any unburnt gases and fuel in the exhaust. Purely an emissions thing.

the reason i remove the brass port.. the heat from the motor dries out the rubber caps.. this bike had both rear caps turn to dust in my hands.
the tech can always install them in 1 min to sync the carbs.

as for the astro. it had a 4.3 V6 it wants to :wheel: anyway.

Thanks Sebspeed. So it sounds like burning off any unburnt gases and fuel in the exhaust would be a good thing. If so, how's it helping matters to remove it?

By removing it, you remove the weight of the parts, some popping noise on deceleration, and provide a "cleaner" reading for sensors during dyno runs. Outside of that, it's a personal taste thing.

kill the spark and turn the motor over. There is something wonderful about the smell of fogger in the spring.
