1994 Steering Head Adjustment

Just back from getting some new tires installed on my '94. Service guy said that my steering head bearings need to be adjusted. I replaced the set in my old 1986 VF500 when they were notched, but these are just a little sloppy on heavy breaking. I'd love to just torque it down appropriately without doing the replacement, that was a major PITA. Anyone know what size socket I need to fabricate the steering head tool?

Or even better, have a tool available for loan? :beer:

I just took/bought a piece of pipe (1 13/16" OD) and cut one end down leaving just two pins to slide into the castle nut, more than enough to torque to required number. I welded a large fender washer to the top and then welded a large nut to that so i could use a simple socket on it.

They're really not that bad to do - just a little time consuming.

Be careful....VFR steering heads have a track record of being over-tightened and made worse.

Or you can just use a hammer and a punch... that's what I did, worked great!

I ended up using a spanner for a shock.. worked like a champ... BUT I have tapered bearings installed, which apparently don't use near the torque numbers that the stock setup does..
