So here's the story. I had a dimly flickering FI light a while back that eventually stopped. Then I was getting stalling at low speeds (like when you turn the handlebars lots). And now the bike won't start... The power comes on and the fuel does it's priming thing but there isn't enough juice to startthebike. Ifyouturn the handle bars back and forth you can see the power shorting and then come back on and you get the priming cycle starting again. So moving the handlebars causes a short and I think if it gets left shorted itcandrain the battery.
Ever seen it?
Easyfix?
Take it to honda?
There was a post here somewhere about the kill swichrelay getting corroded causing the fi lit dim flickering. Is someplace that handlebar turning would push or pull on something and get a short?
2001. Original rr. New battery
Thanks
Mike
The starter pulls a lot of current. I am assuming from your post that the starter is not turning the engine over. If this is correct, it is safe to say that a short circuit, solid enough to prevent the starter from turning, would be passing enough current to blow any fuse in its path.
My guess is there is an intermittently open wire that leads to a relay or switch that should activate the starter but is failing to do so. Short circuits usually take out the fuses that protect that circuit. If you don't have a blown fuse, you probably are not facing a short but more like a wire that is making and breaking with the turning of the handlebars.
New or not, you still have to check that battery to see if has enough voltage to turn the starter. Also be sure the safety switches in the kick stand, clutch (are you in gear?), kickstand and kill switch are ok.
The bike can start if I either let it sit for a while or swap to fresh batt. So the starter works. It's just that if it does short/stall it can hard/ impossible to get the starter to fire again. I get the rest of the electrics on and the fuel primed.

Starter relay is located in the front fairing behind the gauge cluster; check your fork lock-to-lock travel to make sure you're not pulling/pushing on some wires that can cause a short or stress a connector up there.
Honda agrees with you seb, they also said maybe bad corroded relay switch. I'm a newb at this can you give me a few baby steps and tools required to get to where you are talking about? Most I've removed from the bike is the bugs and the seat. :). Front fairings would be new to me.
And what are the voltages tha things should be. I might as well go in Ames with that knowledge.
Thanks a lot
down load the service manual on the files tab and you can fine the voltages in there
The 2 red wires from the iginition were both 90% broken at the 90 degree bend at the zip tie holding them to the ignition area. Cut, reconnected, and taped and I'm good to go.
