Hi everyone.
Yesterday i went to take my seat of my 2001 VFR and the seat never detached from the locking mechanism (Does that make sense?). I put the key in the helmet lock and turned it. Then pulled down on the tab behind it like always but nothing this time.
SO my question is, how do i fix this? I'm supposed to leave for Cali in less than 2 weeks and need this fixed ASAP!

Try giving the passenger area of the seat a push down while actuating the release lever.
Mine (Sargent two-piece seat) doesn't noticably release, but it does come off when I pull it up. And it does lock when I put it back on, but I have to give it a smack to do so.
you may have to yank on the latch pretty hard. Mine on my 90 model came loose, so you had to make a really concerted effort of pressing down on the seat and yanking hard on the latch.
The 98 did the same thing just recently. I had to tighten the bolt to keep the mechanism from moving - when it moves, the catch is not released, hence the yank...quick jerk and the catch should release. Just keep trying. Then when you get it, tighten up the bolt.
The 5th gen has a little nipple on the mechanism to keep it located in the proper orientation, and mine seems to have broken, so I tightened the bolt, and drilled down through the subframe plate that the mechanism attaches to, and into the mechanism where the nipple was. Then used a small sheet metal screw to fasten the mechanism in the correct orientation (it's just a small spring loaded catch that must stay crosswise to the fore/aft sub frame for it to function).

From looking at it more today, i think the metal cable (ref. #2) is no longer connected to something. The lever behind the helmet lock just drops to the bottom of its travel when i turn the key and open the helmet lock.
Does anyone know how easy it will be to get this apart and fixed? And where do i start? Do i just remove the cowl? Sorry, i'm just getting a little nervous with this happening so close to my departure date.
I'm thinking that a very long pair of Hemostats that you can slide under the seat to pull directly on the latch....HF has them.......
NO Problem! this happened to me earlier this year. What you have to do is lift your seat by hand so that you can get at the rear plastics bolts remove them as well as the other ones holding it then slide the rear plastic back so that you can unplug the rear lights then with the rear section off and out of the way you can now see the seat locking mechanism and pull the lock remove the seat and fix the cable.
