A few people have said they see respounce from deer and other animals when they have the whistles mounted... I'm wondering about two things one How much crap/bugs/etc. would it take to stop the sound......... Also we're going down the road making whistle noises. Can they hear it or is it like load pipes, we don't hear them till the get to our rear 1/4 panel? Any Dear out there that can type?

Anyway I bought two sets, one for my VFR & Jeep.........

According to the Mythbusters, they do not.

Had 'em on my ST1100, but not for long. I could hear the whistle at highway speeds. Drove me nuts. I had some on a pickup a few years ago. I could not hear them. I was coming down a road with deer standing on the double yellow. They turned and looked at me, but made no attempt to get out of my way.

Apparently they work on Conedodger :laughing6-hehe:
Deer just say; "Hey! What's that whistlein'? Let's check it out !":3:

I have no faith in them. My friend was running them for a while, but that one deer still jumped right out in front of him at 60 mph. This was several years ago and his bones have healed, but he no longer runs the whistles.

This is what I found in the "Museum of Hoaxes"

The small plastic whistles, easily attached to car bumpers, hit the marketplace several years ago. Some are sold for as little as five dollars. They vary in design, but their claims are relatively the same. Their manufacturers promote them as "acoustic attention-getters", alleging deer would react to the whistle by remaining still. "There has been a lot of conjecture about whether the whistles work or don't work, and we are one of the first independent groups to scientifically test them," says Scheifele, director of bioacoustic research at the National Undersea Research Center at Avery Point and a researcher in the Department of Animal Science. He and his team tested six air-fed whistles in the laboratory and in the field. The study's goal was to determine the actual frequencies generated by the whistles and the intensity at which they are produced, compare that data to the hearing abilities of deer, and then take the animal's acoustic behavior into consideration. Following the directions on each package, the team mounted the devices onto a car's front bumper. Using a road closed to the public, they drove the car at speeds ranging from 30 to 45 miles per hour while recording sound and data.

"We tested them strictly from an acoustical point of view," explains Scheifele. He found that the whistles typically produce a signal either at a frequency of 3 kilohertz (kHz) or 12 kHz. Both, as it turns out, are problematic.

The hearing range of white-tailed deer, the most common species in the United States, is between 2 kHz and 6 kHz, so the animal is not capable of hearing the 12 kHz signal.

Although deer may be able to hear the 3 kHz signal, it is only 3 decibels louder than the road noise created by the car, so the signal is buried. Scheifele points out that the situation would be worse with additional traffic in the area or if the wind was blowing. "All in all, the air-fed whistles do not make sense to me acoustically, " states Scheifele.

Exactly! I mean, c'mon guys. Deer can hear your motor, your chain whirring, your tires...and maybe these silly whistles. But that doesn't mean they run the other way. After all, what does "the other way" mean to a deer?

And what if a bike or car is coming from the other direction and BOTH have whistles? :laughing6-hehe:

But I sure do wish I was $elling 'em to gullible people!

I guess what I should take away from all this, is not to ride any different than I would if I * didn't * have the whistles, and hope that it might add an extra sound..... But if I hear the thing, it's coming off........... This bell design has two whistles, and each one has a different pitch..........
#9
Maybe if the whistle sounds like the whistle of a mountain lion. Do mountain lions whistle?

Does your bike ever get up to 700mph+??? If not, then they will hear the sound before you come, but at a rising pitch.
Real question is, what is the effect of the whislte's sound on the critters. can the attract them instead of scaring them off?, or, might they make them freeze in place on the road too and wait for you to come say hi??

Motorcycle Consumer News did a test on several whistles a few years ago and came up with the same conclusions as are posted here...................they don't work.

Stock pipes make the biggest difference, far less animal issues, while I have had to make abrupt manuvers , ive also been able to pass deer without even disturbing and they were in a noiseless alert status. Where I should have scared them off.

This is an email I received from a retired State police chief (Bmw rider Friend out of Colorado). So I guess the research still continues........

I dropped $5 for mine after reading of a KS State Highway Department study.
They equipped all vehicles in one district with the plastic whistles.
During the test year deer crashes dropped by more than 90%.

Riding at better than 30 mph I have experienced flocks of birds coming toward me, then splitting suddenly into two groups to avoid me.

Deer have suddenly done a 180 to depart from my path. I don't remember that happening before. Usually they stop in the road and dance for me.

I can testify, further, than there are/must be deaf deer.

What is the air speed velocity of an unladen mountain lion whistle?

That would be a 123 mph (in the spread eagle position)........

Yep do like you do for cagers, ride like you're invisible. I have had good luck when seein' Bambi (both directly in front of me and on the side of the road) by laying on the horn, they move quick, you just gotta watch for them to actually cross the road directly in front of you while trying to run away!! Now that I've opened up my exhaust a bit, it's like an automatic horn, scares the crap outta them and they run away automatically :fing02:

We don't have many deer in So. Cal. I have maybe spotted deer twice over the past four years in the local San Bernardino mountains. Nonetheless, I am doubtful of the deer whistles and their effectiveness to chase away deer. on the humor side... On the other hand, there was the phenomenon of "whistle tips" in No. Cal a few years back.

Monk, I have two of them tucked under the headlight on my VFR, been on there many years now. I have seen many deer, not one has yet jumped on the pillion seat with me. They MUST work. lol. They were free so I put them on bike.

I put a mirror in front of my bike so I could put the clearance check though the pace's, and installed under the light as well.......

I've been using them on all of my vehicles for about 5 years and live in and travel through an area lousy with deer. Since using them I've not had a deer cross in from of me. I 've seen them stop and watch me go by and then cross and I've seen them turn back into the bush. It can't be a coincidence. As far as maintenance- they come apart so you can clean the bug guts out of the holes that generate the sound. I hav'nt seen any mountain lions at all so maybe they work on them also!

NOTHING phases the deer in eastern Pennsylvania. Hell, they sleep right in my back yard and just casually look my way if I go outside. And I live in a densely populated area. They graze right alongside the turnpike no more than 30' from semis blasting by at 75 MPH, and never even twitch. Will deer whistles get their attention? I don't think so!
#25
Most of my riding is during the day on back roads with little to no traffic(everybodies working), so it's pretty quite other than natures sounds and my VFR..... It might make a difference between noisy areas and quite areas?

That's how fast a person falls after 12 seconds of free fall(and that's the normal position a cat falls after it has enough time to stabilizes it's self). about everything of simular size will fall at 123 after reaching terminal if they stay in take position. A tight tuck can get you about 135mph, where as a head dive will bring you just over 200mph.............. No pic's though.....

Sweet... As part of the adult patrol in my oldest son's Boy Scout troop we are known as the Killer Rabbits and yes we all have patches on our shoulders of a white rabbit with bloody teeth! We get both laughs and funny looks at Scout functions.

Ohio deer are fun as well as all the others. I figure as 'aerodynamic' as my gear is, something has to be whistling between 2 and 6k to warn them off. I find my Stebel does wonders (of the ones I see...).

So....what does the whine of gear-driven cams do? Run them away or attract them to the middle of the road to wait for you to hit them?

BETTER? :lobby: WORSE?

This is what I have noticed.
A couple of years ago, I installed Micron cans on my bike. I did it as much to shave weight, as for the sound. It seems to me that the deer notice, and turn their heads, sooner than they did with with the stock cans.
To my ears, the sound changed from a hum of a vacuum cleaner, to a growl of a much lower pitch. The deer did notice. I have not had one try to run beside the bike since I changed pipes, they seem to clear off the road sides as I get closer.
Just my 2 cents.

The deer are so bad here in Western New York, that you can lay on your horn, and they just flip you off!! :pissed: LOL In my son's police force, they tried them and had just as many police/deer hits as before. I think they just gave up on the idea

It seems that most info is with you on this, I try to look for them here(Va) most of the time. When I lived in Colorado there were more areas that I could see off the road far enough to spot them if they were going to get in sprint's distance, but here we have heavy growth with-in 3 ft. of the side of the road...... I don't know what a deers standing start time is from 0 to 35, but from the ones I have seen they're quicker that motor powered vehicles.
#33
All I know is in a battle between a deer and a cycle the deer will most likely win. I don't like those odds!! Consequently, I do very little night riding around here!
#34
Just don't put them on backwards or the deer will chase you ;)

I got 47 years with 0.0 Deer strikes... so far so good but Northern
California is deer country and I think I'm way over due for my first
deer strike...

I ask myself what is the problem with deer??? are they stupid???
skitterish??? death wish??? I don't think so... because a study of all
living things shows an inherent will to live... so why do I fear hitting
one and ending both of our lives??? well it seems we all wish to do
the right thing but in a split second choose the wrong thing to do...
is it related to the size of the brain??? well we do have the biggest
brain but how many times have we witnessed a big brain racer fall on
the inside of a track and then run clear across to the other side of
the track for safety??? we clearly observe that this action is the
wrong thing to do... but to the racer it's the right thing to do... well
deer also make the wrong decision and may cross paths...

A study of Prey and Predators tell us that to avoid danger an animal
must employ the sense of sight... sound and smell... A Mountain Lion
might must beat a Deer's 3 defenses to eat... and they know that Deer
are not easy prey... quite the contrary... they are down right hard
to catch... what is working against the Mountain Lion and in the
Deer's favor is a keen sense of smell... unfortunately that's the one
danger a rider on a bike doesn't pose... we don't smell dangerous
enough for deer to steer clear and they end up doing the wrong thing
right in our path... I think if we smelled like Mountain Lions... I doubt
we'd ever see them again...

We could start a company selling those auto-matic-time-release air fresheners, but instead of perfume, put Mt.lion urine in the bottle so it sprays us and the bike....

Sure... but who is going to take the samples??? the last time I was near my friends pet Mt Lion Molly... I just called here kitty kitty kitty and she hissed and took a swipe at me...

We have so many deer that it takes a two-man crew to take care of them.
