I have searched a lot on this site for information on the VF1000R and have not seen anyone attempt any exhausts for this or at least not discuss it.
I have seen the build threads which are great, but not too much mention of the exhausts that they used.
Can the RC51 or VFR800 exhausts be used towards getting a suitable exhaust into the 85 VF1000R?
I can weld steel and aluminum. What are people using for these exhausts? What are the RC51 and VFR 800 exhausts made of?
Any insight that will shed some light on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
By the way I just picked up 2 VF1000R's that need restoring and I plan to update the wheels, suspension, etc...

I have a buddy who has a kR as well and he used VTR1000(SuperHawk) cans for his. Slight modification to make them fit. Very quiet and they looked good but they were heavy. I did a custom exhaust which is not for the faint of heart. Louder and in need of some precise jetting. The 51 cans could work but anything can be made to fit if you can make some mid pipes.
Is that you Dave? I meant to get back to you..
As for exhausts, both VF1000RS and Kel have made their own and you can search through their threads. The VFR800 wont work, not without major surgery to line things up. You may be able to use the slip-ons from a RC-51, but likely have to use different mid pipes as I think they have different IDs. I have CBR1100XX midpipes for now, but a local muffler shop can make the proper fitting mids for $100.
Good luck with the project - post some pics when you can!
When I had my VF1KR, I had a set of RC51 cans and mids to try on it. but sold it.
In looking at the connections, bends , etc, etc, I thought they would be close due to the curve and connector size.
My advise. Get a second hand set and try it. All youi have to do is hand the guy at the muffler shop a $20 and get him to expand/contract the connector to mate with the box on the KR. After that its make the hanger fit.
Might as well go with something a bit lighter/trick if you are going to mod it to fit. I've got a set of Yoshimura RS3's that may make it on a bike by mating to a NOS Supertrapp 2x2>1 full header system....or not.
I kind of like the newish carbon Akrapovic mufflers. Seems something like that would be a waste to connect to the stock collector box though.
When talking about headers, keep in mind that the V4 cannot use an equal length design. This is an often misunderstood concept, but the 90 phase offset of the front to rear cylinder banks will not allow equal lengths to work. Lots of theory there, the bottom line being a situation where you need to tune the header to match a particular rpm for peak operation. The effectiveness of the header will drop off progressively as you diverge from that rpm. That's why V4's always have a dip in the power in the midrange - unless you want to kill the top end power there isn't much you can do about it.
It was nice talking to you the other day, welcome to the site!

Yeah it's me. I was looking at your bike again today. I considered buying it because it seems like you have a lot of parts I would like. Especially that 86 headlight setup. I have 2 already so I am not sure that would wise.
Yes I am contemplating a full exhaust. I mentioned the RC51 since I figured I could get an aftermarket full system and then just bend and change what needed to be done.
After reading what Jamie said it seems like this would be far more complicated than I thought for me to attempt by myself. I know there are guys out there that make custom full systems and tune them. I may have to go in that direction.
The goal is to lighten up the bike some with the exhaust and make it sound a lot nicer. Both bikes have aftermarket cans on them. I would never consider using a newer model stock exhaust unless it was my only route.
I saw that guy's 4-1 Sudco and salivated. I want something like that.
I have some growing pains at my office with hiring staff so I don't know how much of a budget I have. Jamie already has a lot of my dollars spent so far. I am also worried about the carbs, cams, etc... I will have to wait and see what pops up there.
I am sitting on my hands right now since the finances aren't there for anything for about 2 months, but I am sure a few hundred will slip through my hands here and there.
Jamie I am sure you won't like this, but I am really leaning hard towards the 5" rear with a 180 on it. GMD computrac is gonna measure the alignment of the frame when I get a chance.

I belive a 5" with a 180 is pushing it, maybe a 170, or go to a 5.5".
You can get a DIY header kit made of bits and pieces and tack it together. Personally, I like Tom's mutant exhaust and will probably copy him.

I was looking into the pieces deal, but what Jamie said has me wondering if I would spend all that time and then hurt the performance. I need to spend some time researching it.
