I am thinking of putting a set of Renthal moto bars on my second 1998 VFR. I have seen others making changes on fork swaps but so far I have seen nothing on making the conversion on the stock fork triples. I really have no desire to chamge more than I need. Best case just the conversion riser and a bar would be ideal. Of course I understand some cables may need to be changed but, if it was not needed, great.
Tell me what I have not thought of yet. Tell me how can I do this with the least amount of impact to my wallet and my bike. Heck I may wish to change it back some day. What parts do I need? What has to be replace, what does not?
What are you thoughts?
I've machined the upper triples and mounted risers directly to them for guys before. It's worked very well. There is actually a good selection of riser parts available too. I've found it best to get the handle bar you want to use first and line it up. That will allow you to figure out what height riser you need. Normally the fork tops are the biggest issue. Keep in mind fairing clearance from lock to lock as well.
Don't forget that your throttle cables and brake lines might not (read: probably not) be long enough. That would likely be the biggest cost impact of making a change like this.

Although I did have to draw machanical parts in my school days and I believe i could draw something close to what I need, I am in no way set up to machine parts at this time.
I would believe that the factory triple could be drilled but I do not know if the triple could handle the stresses.
I also believe a new upper could be made to fit the fork tops with risers built in to the drawing. But again I am not up for such a task.
I am not looking for lots of rise, then again if I have to lengthen cables then that would be the time to add more while I can.
Where are you finding the riser parts you are speaking of?
LSL makes a kit complete with new triple, hardware, longer lines, and your choice of bar for about $400.
You can buy a set of risers between $30-60, a bar between $40-$130, and you'd have to sort out your own lines if you piece it together as well. Look up some of FotoMoto's posts on how he did his.
Drilling the stock triple isn't a big deal if you have a good eye and know how to measure. The stock triple is up to the task, I'd recommend using a large washer on the bottom to spread the load out a bit.

If you are specfic and can make a good drawing for them they can cheaply machine it for you. As for the throttle cables and brake/clutch lines if its anything like the 4th Gen you have
some room to play with. I got a set of helibars for my 95 from a bike salvage yard here in Az and they are 1 1/4" higher and 1 1/2" further back. The biggest problem I had for fitting the helibars
was the throttle cable. I had to disconnect it from the plastic sleeve and reroute it through the fork and steering stem and after that it was fine.
I had a set of Renthal superbike bars on my old 5th gen. Drilled the top triple for the risers, there are two casting/flash circles on the underside of the triple that are perfect to use as a reference for drilling. Never had a problem with mine, rise was minimal, but the pull back and angle were a lot less. Actually, my friend whom I sold the bike to is reverting back to the stock clip ons, if you're interested in purchasing his stuff I can put you in contact with him. PM me for his info.

Bar risers are not very complicated at all. Just a single 1/2" bolt is all they use (yes, most have Imperial threads). Just mark the spots where you want them and drill the holes in the upper clamp with a drill press. Voila!

I would want them drilled right through, with nuts and washers on the underside as opposed to drilling and threading the upper triple to accept the bolts.

he didnt say anything about tapping the upper tree.. he said the risers have 1/2 bolts with imperial threads.. have you seen how THIN the top clamp is??? any threads would pull out in 2 seconds.
personally.. i flip the top clamp.. and tighten it down.. ..insert aluminum plates to to weld down.. THEN drill it out. :fing02:

Is that because of the softer alloy and the issues that can come along with that? I think I can see where you are headed there.

I see your point also. I have someone with a TIG nearby, we can do that. And even if there was material what would be the spec on setting my wrech before I over tighten?
I think I like the idea of steel bolts with steel washers etc... In fact I may get some Titanium...Yes, I like :biggrin:

Agreed -- I'd like to do something like that myself, but I can't stomach $400 for a kit.

All of the risers I've installed for guys use a bolt that comes up from the bottom. A simple through hole is all you need!
I tlooks like I can find a Riser for 50 - 100 bucks that look sturdy enough and a bar for around 60 bucks. This does not sound too bad.
Has anyone does this mod on 5th gen that can recall what else had to be changed? What was the rise before other things had to be changed out? I really am not looking for too much rise. I am thinking if the rise is 3/4 to 1 inch with a set back of the same or less I should be ok with a light sweep and rise in the bar. I hope to not rise more than 2 inch total with 1 - 1 1/2 inch set back.

from what I remember, with low rise and low pull-back, at least one of these conversions has happened without the cables being changed. Try it first and see.
Heres a 125 dollar example of what will get you 3/4 rise and your choice of the other dimensions
