2nd gen valve cover gaskets - discontinued!

Lots of random posts about this in other threads, but couldn't find a link to a site that carries them or how to repair them or anything.
What's the drill? No-can-find new ones. I'll be taking the covers off for valve adjustments in the spring and don't want to end up gasketless - who knows when they were last removed, and one is already leaking oil.

you could always get them to ship it to one of your vfrd buddies and have the vfrd buddy ship it to you. If you want, I'll do it. It would come all the way to Louisiana first!

for side gaskets..
go to your local ato parts place.. get a big roll off gasket paper..
and some GREY permatext. is the same stuff as grey honda bond and yamabond..

get a SOFT hammer.. rubber is best..plastic will work.
from the 1 dollar store and a paper hole punch..

clean the face of the cover.. aka the mating surface..

put the 2 guide pins in .. roll out your gasket paper..
line up the cover..to one end..then TAP.. tap.. the ends with the pins.. ..look at the paper..it will have a marks of the pins.. use the hole punch to carefully pinch out the hole for the pin..

slide the paper into place on the cover..
then carefully TAP along the face.. both edges.. it will mark.. and possibly CUT the shape of the cover.

now..
keeping one pin in and carefully keeping the gasket lined up..
place on bench and take a bolt.. and tap it in every hole to mark the gasket. use a razor blade to cut the shape if needed. use the hole punch to cut the holes..

now that your gasket is formed.. smear it with permatext on one side.. just enough to cover the surface.. place sticky side to the case or part.. then smear the other side.. install and tighten down.. go riding! :fing02:

you can put grey permatext on the valve cover rubber gaskets..

or.. you can have them shipped to me and will be more than happy to forward them up to you..

I like the homemade gasket paper option. Especially since it's not an area of high pressure, sounds like it would work beautifully. But then again I haven't seen these gaskets or how thick they are etc...

And hey, DC sure is closer than Louisiana!

You can also fit the gaskets using gasket sealant on one side and grease on the other - will still seal nicely but becomes removable.

I have a place in Calais, Maine that I get stuff shipped to all the time. I actually have a VFRDness there right now and haven't had time to go get it yet. Only 1 hour from me. If you want you can get it shipped there and I can pick it up for you, then forward it.

Chazzviffer, you can probably get away with resealing the old gaskets. I am not sure if the gaskets are similar to my 1st gen, but I was able to reuse my gaskets.

The gaskets were rather thick and fit into a recess on the valve cover. Mine weren't flat like a headgasket, but the 2nd gen may be different. This groove prevents them from being overtightened, crushed and split. But I think mine have shrunk a bit and the rear valve cover had leaked oil.

Carefully working the gasket out of the recess, I cleaned and degreased the recess, and set the gasket in place with a thin smear of Permatex gasket goop (forget exactly which one, but it was oil resistant). Not too much cuz I didn't want excess coming out into oil system.

Then a great tip on this forum from someone I don't recall at the moment, was to get some shims to put under the four chrome valve cover bolts. The bolts only screw down so far, then bottom out. Bolts can be tight, but not enough force on the valve cover and gaskets. This is to apply a bit more pressure on the rubber grommets that sit under the bolt in the bolt hole recess of the valve cover (incase they have shrunk over the years). I only needed a shim or two, and it made all the difference.

I have ridded my first gen a fair bit since, and no leakage from the rear. :biggrin:
