What alternatives are there to the stock shock on the '86-87 700/750?
It's only about 10.5" long whereas other monoshocks are about 12" long.
Can a different mount be fabbed up to fit a better shock to this model, has anyone done it?
Talk to Jamie Daugherty. Daugherty Motorsports. He's a member on here. He just modified a Fox Twin Clicker to fit my 86 VFR 750. The replacement is longer because he added another 3/4" at my request, which is adjustable.
Here is another solution than a fox shock. I also had Jamie do a shock for my 87 but I bought a f4i shock off ebay for $30 sent it to Jamie to work his magic.
This is a picture of the two side by side.

Sorry about the photo this was the old camera, she started taking purple photos.
Yep, I don't see any other way, it's gonna have to get such a shock. Guess I can't touch it till Springtime when a cruiser will actually sell around here....

Absolutely, I posted just before Daugherty replied to a PM.
The cost is prohibitive....at least right now.
I have high hopes for selling my Vmax this Spring, the funds will go a long way towards suspension and cosmetics on the VFR.
Is your Fox shock from some other bike? Or did you get it straight from the factory?
It's from some other bike. Jamie picked it out and modified for me. I chose the Fox cause I'm taking it to the track some and...maybe one day if I can afford it, I may even run it in a WERA vintage race or two. He has cheaper options, plus you can send him a shock to rebuild if you have one, like 87whitevfr said. Check out his website.
I did check out the website, been checking it out for weeks
Heck I've been watching donor shocks on Ebay for a while too.
Unlike you guys, I'm not trying to race the bike, I just want to keep from shaking my teeth out on potholes. I know James will send me towards suitable street-use shocks, when it's time....

Try the F3 rear shock also...Jamie used that one for my VFR...
