Hi irishjohn, welcome to the forum. I recently finished up some rehab on my '85 VF500F which I bought last fall. If I can be of help, please let me know. How about a pic??
Link to the VF500F Clymer maual. The Honda service manual is much better if you can find one, keep an eye on EBay..

I will get a photo posted soon. I bought the bike from a friend who owns a pawn shop. The VF500f was pawned, then sold and the seller was supposed to bring the title to the shop. Never happened and he has now disappeared. So, to get a title, I had to find a frame with good title and do a switch, in order to get the bike licensed. The frame should be here next week, I am in the process of pulling the bike apart. I'll have a frame with no title for sale if anyone wants one.

while it will take longer, you could do the 'abandoned motorcycle' claim. Might have to have the pawnshop do it, but it just involves filing a paper and twiddling your thumbs waiting for the title.
