Thought I would share some details on this since I know a few are looking to fab their own. I bought another VF1000R just for the exhaust, and heres what I have. It is a 'Hole Shot' and I assume Dale Walker marketed it but I heard it was made by Sudco/Hindle, can anyone confirm? Its a little beat up, but I was going to replace the mid pipe and muffler with a Yoshimura or Akrapovic. So - Tear down was easy, the headers have flanges that bolt into the head and springs hold the front pipes in place. The rear uses the factory down tubes, without clamps or gaskets at the new header. there is a falnge that bolts to the left side of the engine for support, but this one was aluminum and was broken. I believe its stainless, and I am thinking a media blast cleaning to remove the build up and corrision, just worried about blasting a hole in the piping...

The biggest hurdle at the moment is removing the stocker off mine - one flange is unbolted but I cannot get it off! It seams the stud has seized to the collar :pissed:

Have you tried a torch? The rear pipes look a good bit shorter than the front ones.

Yes, Dales exhaust were made by Sudco.

Jaime's looking for a pattern for the VF1KR.

Like Larry said, hindle/holeshot/Sudco. Same thing. They aren't stainless though. Nickel plated mild steel.

That explains a lot - OK, media blasting it is. Anyone have a recommendation for refinishing?

Yep.... No stainless in Hindle pipes of that era ..... Know Lang quite well, still trying to talk him into building some pipes .... Not much luck without volume involved. :pissed:

Mine will be done in black ceramic powder coat. I'll leave the Akrapovic midpipe in stainless.

The nickel plating will have to be removed. Take it to a chrome shop and have them dip and strip it. They know exactly how to do that. I think a nitric acid bath is what they use.

Then, when it's all shiny clean, have it Jet-Hot coated.

Or have it chromed while it's already in the chrome shop?

if the surface is already pitted from external corrosion, then the chrome will show every pit and look like crap.

Chrome also blues with heat, and looks like crap.

At least Nickel turns a nice gold hue when heated past a certain point, and looks better then bluing.

BUT, nickel will also show every pit.

Jet-Hot is considerably thicker than electroplating, and will "hide" any surface imperfections better.

But chrome will blind anyone that tries to get close enough to see the pits! :laughing6-hehe:

The ceramic coating I did went on pretty easy and with a big enough oven, you can do it yourself.

I used the chrome but it doesn't look like real chrome, which is a good thing. You can't polish it that good without a tumbler. I polished mine to a nice nickle finish, shiny but not blingy. They have other finishes. Check them out here.

If you want to prevent chrome pipes from turning blue, spray a ton of high temp white engine paint inside each headder. It has worked for me for years.

This is on the F, right? Did you make a new mid pipe? And do you have a sound/ video clip of the exhaust note?

Your exhaust looks great Kel, but I don't have an oven to do that. I think black header kote after its cleaned up.

Thanks Larry, but I've had a Hindle 4-1 on my 1000's since back in the day when you could still buy one. In fact, I also designed my own 4-1 header about 8 years ago that I feel has some improvements over the Hindle systems. The problem: not enough volume in V4 exhausts to be able to produce them at a reasonable price.

Something else to note is that the first SUDCO exhausts were not Hindle's. SUDCO made their own for a short while then realized it was too expensive and decided to partner with Hindle to private label their headers. SUDCO never really sold very many anyway so it's unlikely to come across one these days.

On the F yes. I used the Akra midpipe but I did modify the collector on the header to mate with the Akrapovic midpipe.

Here`s a video with it on a VF1000R before I swapped it to the F:

ok, so these are the Sudco/Hindle's NOT the original Sudco's then, I'm assuming. And FWIW, the V&H 4x2's I originally put on the VF had better power I thought... at least until they rotted apart (grrr)

Yep, that's the private-labeled-Hindle version of the SUDCO. The 4-2's have better midrange but not as much up top, so it's not surprising that it 'fealt' better. There are trade offs to everything!

Quick updates - finally got the header cleaned up and used high temp header paint to finish it. I had to make a new bracket but it bolted up nice...
I'll update the rest under the bike build -
