Can you put a 190/50zr-17 tire on on vfr1200?

Ive been looking at a replacement rear tire for my vfr1200. I already have a bt-023 front that im happy with. But i can only seem to find the bt023 in 190/50zr-17. I dont even think they make a 190/55 in the bt023.

Thoughts??

It's doable, but you will either have to raise the rear or lower the front to quicken the steering again. The 190/50 is a shorter tire so it will lower the rear of the bike. Also, it will make your effective gearing shorter, so the bike would accelerate marginally faster. The tire will also have a slightly flatter profile on the rim. You may have to make up to a 10mm ? Change in chassis height to compensate. If you are tall, you should raise the back so you don't lose cornering clearance.

Did you check the tire sizing data on bridgestones website? Maybe they do make it and no one has it in stock? Might have to order it and wait?

It won't handle as well but it will fit. They're both designed to go on a 6 inch rim.

I live in the UK and I am taking delivery of a 1200F this coming week.

I've had BT023's on other bikesand been very pleased with them and when I saw that there was no BT023 option I sent an email to Bridgestone in the UK.

This was the response I received: -

"Thank you for your mail.

Yes, the 190/55-17 on the BT-023 is due with us by October, hopefully earlier.

It was due in July but, due to the tragic events in Japan, it has been delayed, but is on it's way."

So there is a reason it's not available but it will be soon.

That size will work fine. The second number is the apect ratio. Not a lot of diffirence between a 45, 50, 55. It doesnt mean that the sidewall is 45, 50 MM.

190/55 sidewall height = 104.5mm
190/50 sidewall height = 95mm

So the rear of the bike will be lowered by 9.5mm, which is not an inconsiderable amount.

My earlier 10mm guess was just a guess, as I was on my iphone and didn't want to dig that far with the tiny keyboard.


So yea, you definetly will need to raise the rear of the bike 10mm to return the chassis geometry to normal. And it still might steer a little slower due to the flatter profile.

I'm running a Pirelli angel ST 190/50. Not a huge difference in handling/gearing. Noticeable, but not bad. The Pirelli seems to have a more v shape profile than the Dunlop roadsmart.

Thanks guys. Think im gonna just go with a bt16 for now since they have my size. My front bt23 already has 3000 miles on it so both tires wear out just in time to pick up a set of bt23's.

Your right. My bad. I hate to give false info. I was thinking 5-6 mm diffirence. 10mm is substanytal in my book. Thanks for correcting my error.
