Stator? R/R? Ugh!

Well, here goes. Please hold back on the comments to do a search...I've done that and read a lot. I just wanted to put this out there to get some help. Thanks guys...

My FI light has started coming on intermittently with an immediate loss of power and RPMs , lasting anywhere from a second or less to maybe 3-4 seconds and then just as suddenly power comes back and the FI light goes out. I haven't taken off the plastics yet and checked voltages. What do I check? Voltage at the battery with bike off, bike idling, and at 5000 rpm? I have the VFRness installed about 15k miles ago, and about 5k miles after that, bike died and I noticed my big white connector was melted together and wires burned (with a 30 amp fuse blown that day), so I cut out the connector and bad parts of the wires and reconnected everything with crimp on butt splices. Everything has been good until this week. Should I just replace the stator and the R/R at the same time to be safe? I have about 37k miles on the clock. Thanks for your input...

This is becoming a real annoyance for a lot of us. Definitely start with checking your voltages as mentioned. I'd definitely pull the tupperware and look for more melted stuff too. How old is your battery?

Strange that your FI light blinks...mine when the Stator was dying it did not blink. Did the FI light blink when the bike was stationery or in motion?

I posted because I have not read about the exact symptoms I'm having. The battery is nearly new, but with this problem it could already be damaged. My bike still runs most of the time, it's not a catastrophic failure yet. If it's such an annoyance remember that the next time you have a problem!

It cuts out when running and I've quit riding the bike because of it. Not a big deal when tooling along in a straight line, but a few times it's happened while I'm mid-turn and if I was pushing it, I could just run right off the road with a sudden loss of power.

First steps -
- get voltmeter and check battery while off.
- Do the same again at idle,
- Next with volt meter across the battery again, check voltage at 5000 rpm.

Go from there ----

Here the basic steps - its not hard.

I'm on your side...actually same boat. I'm talking about Honda's poor electrical engineering being the annoyance for all of us. My R/R just recently blew up as well as melting more wires....again. :fing02:

i had the exact symptoms with my supersport... it turned out to be a loosening ground. tightened up and no problems since. it was actually the ecu case ground.

electrical problems

i just did my stator on my vfr...

Sounds like the old burned up 30 amp fuse holder to me!

The big white connector usually melts because we've been disconnecting and reconnecting it repeatedly in order to check stator output when having charging system failure symptoms... this is because the female parts of the connector get opened up and no longer make a nice tight fit for their male counterparts... producing arcing/bad connections and thus heating up, sparking and melting...

Whenever you take a connector apart (the typical fast-on, fast-off connectors) you should crimp the female terminal so that when the male is inserted it does so under pressure/tightly.

I don't know how many times I've seen people swap their stators out only to find a few thousand km down the road that their big white connector melts...

If stator output readings and R/R behaviour at the battery terminals are normal, no need to get new ones... just be sure to improve your connections and keep those female bits tight

Have your battery load tested for good measure.

By the way.. there is a How-to on this site regarding how to interpret the flashed the FI light emits. Actually you can short the associated connector and pull all recorded FI failure codes up from the ECU...

It explains that one long flash = 10 and one short flash = 1... so BEEEEP BIP would be 10+1=11... BEEEEP BEEEEP BIP would be 10+10+1=21... look up the related code and you know what's going wrong. (Download the Honda Service Manual in the Files section), and do a search for the How-to.

Check all your grounding terminals and do the BYC fix (lots of ground wires go through this Big Yellow Connector)...

HS will likely be along shortly to give you the tongue-lashing you clearly deserve! :pissed: Just like I got a few months ago after my unfortunate R/R failure experience  My R/R failure thread - complete with HS bollocking!

Sorry man! I just am reacting I guess...I'm in the middle of moving and this is one problem I didn't need right now! It's weird that Honda got this so wrong. My ST1300 (and most folks) has absolutely NO electrical problems...
