Installed new Battery, new R/R, New Stator.

turn key on get 13.5 and it starts dropping down to 12.4
start bike at idol get 14.5 and climbing to 15
take it up to 5000rpm and get 14.7 and it climbs to 15.3

Wait a week due to life

turn key on get 12.1
at idol get 15.2
at 5000rpm get 15.1 dropped to 15.0

So what the hell is wrong here it can't be the stator so I am left with rr or battery or what else could it be. The battery is a interstate, the R/R and Stator came from Tightwad. All fuses look good. I am beyond frustrated!

Honda service manual says over 15.5v is overcharging.

Sounds like everything is working fine to me.

You didn't mention if you keep the battery on a tender or maintainer - it will lose some its charge each day - as much as 1%, so after a week a 12v reading would not be unusual having seen 13 the week before.  The book sez 13.0v is a full charge. I keep everything on a Battery Tender - even my truck that I don't drive often.  They have really served me well.   If you're unsure whether the battery they sold you is good, have it load tested to see if the CCA's  are in spec.  Also, good P/M is to follow the ground cable from the battery over the connection to the chassis.  Remove and check that the connection is clean.  It's a bit of a PITA on a 5th gen, but if you reach through from the left side I found it's a bit easier to R/R the bolt.   Lots of guys would be thrilled to have those numbers . . .

I am back from a 30min ride. My shoulder is screamin at me but here are my new readings.

At idol it was reading 14.8

at 5000rpm it read 15.1

turned it off waited 5 min turned the key one and it read 13.6

I am just worried by it not staying consistent in the readings. Tightwad has also suggested that the stinger voltmeter may not be giving a true reading and to get a actual meter and re test.

Thanks guys

I do not keep it on a tender unless I am not going to ride it for a long time like winter. However this is a new battery.

I keep mine on a tender any time it is parked in my garage even if it is just for a few hours.  I have gotten ridiculous battery life by doing this on too many batteries for it not to be worth it.

And Tightwad's suggestion is very valid.  Use a true multimeter across the battery terminals as you never know what is loading your bike's voltmeter in the system.   :fing02:

Why do you need consistant readings, charge should be higher if the battery needs it , lower if it doesnt ,  but your readings seem to be in spec in a riding mode 14.5 to 15 , thats strong charging ,  Doesnt seem like an issue and normal to me.

OK Thanks guys. I will button it up tonight and call it good. Just with all the 5 gen electrical issues I am/was a tad Freaked!!! by the readings.

Now all I need is to get my shoulder healed up enough to ride.

Buddy you totally have a ground issue. 15v will eventually take out the battery and the regulator. When the reg can't see a good ground it thinks it's undercharging and raises the voltage. Try a bypass from the reg to the battery to confirm.  My Gen5 varies at idle but above that it stays right at 14.0v I know it's an old thread but it might still be an issue.

I say put the ol' shoulder on the battery tender. It may help... I think Squamish may be right...  but I know nothing, so don't take my word for it.
