Replace D&D muffler w/ stock can on 2000 VFR w PCII?

I am planning on buying Lobster's 2000 VFR with a PCII and a D&D muffler on Saturday 10/22/11. Lobster says it sounds like a V-8. I am a stock muffler fan and am concerned it will be to loud for me.

If it is (I have not heard it yet):
- will there be complications with the PC II when replacing the D&D can with a stock can?
- Is a new map required?
- Can the PC II be removed easily if I want to eliminate all the associated technical issues?
- Anyone have a stock muffler in good condition to sell?

I have no knowledge of the Power Commanders and am an electrical moron (It's frickin' magic to me)!

I'd welcome any informed information.

Then there the question of:
"Am I crazy to want a 2nd 5th gen to replace my current 100,000 mile '01 in the distant future when she becomes worn out?"

I love the machines so much I never want to be without one. I plan to keep riding the '01 as well as the '00. The '01 will be my distance machine (I currently put 18000 miles per short Minnesota year on her)  and the '00 my city bike. I want to assure Lobster his machine will never fall into the hands of a squid.

So I am going to be the Devil's advocate here...

Have you tried the forth Gen VFR?
I have a Y2K VFR which replaced my '96 in 2000 when I totaled it.
In 96 when I bought my VFR750F, I thought it was the best bike I ever rode, especially coming from a CBR1000F.
I have had this idea to buy matching forth gens for my wife and I. Saturday, I bought my wife a '96 VFR750F with 15K miles.
The bike was perfect in every way. I test rode it Saturday before buying it and then Sunday after I replaced the fluids and tires installing a '98 wheel with a 180.
We rode all day and my wife loves the bike as much as she loved my original '96. I was on my Y2K. Monday I took out the '96 and did ablout 200 miles in the mountains.
The forth gen handles much better than my Y2K and the lean angle is better. The accelleration is not as good - the fuel injection is a huge difference.
But long story short, I am now shopping for my '96. They look just as sharp 15 years later as they did on the showroom floor. The cost for a decent low milage is 2500.00 -  2800.00




Now for your answer. The PCII should be fine.
I have the Two Bros Titanium Full System on mine. The factory FI was able to compensate just fine.

I agree with stock over D&D. Those cans absolutely sound like sh1t. I bought one cheap for my wife's 2002 YZF600F nine years ago. It sounded terrible.

I have owned a '90, a '97, and just got my '99 a month ago.  I can't speak about the handling yet, but I love the fuel injection over the 4th gen carbs.   Mine came with a PC II, and I put a new map in it that I downloaded from the Dynojet site.   If you want to bypassing it, it is a simple matter to unplug the bike's ECM connector from the Power Commander, and return the harness plug to it's original location after disconnecting the PC from the ECM (you can leave the PC where it is now).

Yes, I really like the VFR750F and have drooled over several a local bike nights. Congratulations to your wife for her new bike. For me, the fuel injection is important. I have never ridden any other VFR. The '01 was the only decent bike for sale locally when I was looking. Was not familiar with VFRs at all when I stumbled across mine. Research on this particular bike convinced me. Had there been any 3rd or 4th gen bikes for sale I may well have gone with one of those esp. after a test drive showed what you have realized. There are particular strengths of the earlier models.
Thanks for the advice on the PC II and support for stock can. There is a lot of enthusiasm for after-market exhausts on this site and feel in the minority favoring stock. I really do not want the attention of loud exhausts. You and your wife ride safe.

D&D cans are too loud for people who like noisy exhausts, much less people who prefer stockers.

I bought Lobsters beautiful machine on Sat. Rode it home from Roscoe Ill and it rides magnificent. It is very comfortable with the raised clip-ons and lowered pegs. Lobsters machined mirror extenders are also fabulous. The D&D does not seem much louder than my '01's stock can. However I do prefer the stock sound. So I am looking for a stock can. The D&D looks beautiful. Not a mark on it. Many thanks again Lobster!

Update: I'm keeping everything as is til spring. This machine performs much better than my stock '01.

This is my first experience with Pilot Power 2's (Lobster says 500 miles max on them). They are fabulous; much better handling  than the Dunlop RoadSmarts I've been using.

PPs are friggin awesome.  I have a set ready to go on my '99 after the currently installed Qualifiers are a bit more worn.  I run PP 2CTs on all of my bikes (except my dirtbike, for obvious reasons).

So, the D&D doesn't sound louder than your stock can?  Did you actually ride the bike home (with the motor running) or did you trailer it?  Or maybe you own the world's greatest earplugs!  LOL

I did ride it home! And the motor was running! And I do wear earplugs! They are rated at -28 db. But I am fairly deaf (and old).

To update you on my muffler situation, I've decided to replace the D&D with stock. The "putt-putt-putt" (my interpretation) in for crap. Ride safe pal!

HispanicSlammer gave me his D&D when he was done with it several years ago. Money was tight and I wanted something louder than stock. Eventually I just couldn't take it any more and bought a Micron from a local guy. The D&D was just too obnoxiously loud for me. The Micron is a nice level, but doesn't shake my neighbors windows at 7 am when I leave for work. If you find out the performance suffers when you put the stock muffler back on, there are other alternatives. :smile:

Hey wera803, thanks for your response. I'm having a tough time defining loud but I agree the D&D is definitely obnoxious. I have a couple of stock cans lined up to replace it.

Many times a pipe will need repacking. Which will quiet it down considerably.

Hi Lobie, my phone did show up. A woman called several contacts until one i.d. me. Found in the leaves on the other side of my block. I must have been comatose cause I do not remember being anywhere near there. Someone has agreed to buy the D&D for $100. Thanks for the advice. I am getting used to the sound but I will not miss it. Love your machine, it shows all your loving care. Ride safe pal.
