various questions

Hi everyone, new to this forum, joined to ask a few questions. I`ve owned a `96` vfr750 (60,000 miles) for about 9 months now and it`s developed a few niggley problems.

1. at about 7,500 rpm i get a strange engine vibration which goes at about 8,250 rpm
2. random tapping noise on idle, which goes as soon as i release the clutch
3. at 6,000 rpm if i accelerate hard the clutch slips for a few seconds then bites n the bike takes off like a rocket. clutch doesn`t slip any other time
4. no temp gauge reading, when the engine gets hot the fan cuts in no problems and shuts down again so don`t think it`s the thermostat

gonna give the bike a big service in a couple of weeks so would like to do all this at the same time as chain/sprockets, carb balance, plugs n oil etc so any tips/pointers would be very welcome.

Random noise is probably clutch basket bearing(mine's done it for 50k ...at least)
Vibration is probably down to carbs needing synched (easy job....the second time)
temp gauge or wiring must be faulty ...if the fan seems to operate correctly
Clutch slip....dunno
But fully synth oil killed my clutch(it did...dont bother trying to persuade me otherwise)
Someone else will be along in a min to tell you your r/r is fecked :-)

my '95 has the same noise & has for years/100k+ km?, too lazy to fix it. if you're fussy it's probably the aforementioned bearing so should you decide to replace clutch discs (slipping) that would be an appropriate time to follow through on the brg issue. I would try running a non-synth content oil for a few thousand km before getting into the clutch, my preference is any decent brand 15-40 diesel-type. there's a small sender screwed into the rad or thermostat housing (can't exactly recall which), could be your temp guage isn't getting a msg from that due to it(or the wire to the guage) being faulty. have a look for loose engine mount bolts somewhere re:vibration

2) Just the clutch making a bit of a noise. No big issue.

4) Sounds like there's something wrong with your gauge. Check the wiring for it. I'd want to get that fixed. Otherwise, how will you know if your cooling system decides to take a dump.

3) You're going to have to explain what you are doing to get this. Are you going from a stop? Are you moving already and downshifting?


And no idea why bob would think that there's anything wrong with the R/r.
