So, some time ago I took on a task I have only been dreaming of for my beloved VFR. Short history, I had a SV650S before the VFR and had a M4 Carbon Fiber can on the bike. I loved the sound, it was deep and throaty but without being too loud. I kind of wanted the same thing for the VFR but I didn't really want to go with Leo Vince (even though their prices have dropped) and wanted the Stain Tune but without the price (and they didn't have Carbon Fiber). So I got to thinking about if I could fab up a way to put the M4's on the VFR. I ran the measurements, taking into account the stock luggage rack, which I use daily. A buddy of mine can weld, big bonus. I called up M4, they made a custom can, wrapped reverse, to match the can I already had for the SV so I had a matching set. And thus the fabrication began. At first I was all set to cut the cans down but in the end, with the stock luggage on the bike, it doesn't look to bad.

Mock-up with the mid-pipe that came with the M4

FYI, the exhaust system, minus the cans weighs in at 9lbs. lighter. The M4's weighed only 4lbs. so I netted a loss of 5lbs. on the total exhaust.
Here is the size difference in the M4 and the stock exhaust that had to be made up

Mocked up with nothing welded

Totally welded.

There is about 1/16"-1/8" clearance at the proper angle with the stock luggage rack. No rubbing, no touching all the way around. The cans stick out about 3" further than stock, but as I rarely take the side cases off, the lines flow rather nicely between the top case rack to the cans to the side cases.

Now the changes to the stock exhaust are permanent but the cans are now truely slip on. This means I don't need to dissassemble the entire rear end of the bike to take off the exhaust. This is so nice. There are probably smaller carbon cans on the market but the M4's were cheapest for the SV so I stuck with that, plus I already had one can and only needed to order the other, not too bad.
