Powder Coating rims. Unreasonable $.

Called today for quotes here in Jax, Fl about getting the rims to my 04 powder coated black. I was quoted a price of $100 a wheel. Didn't sound too unreasonable until he said I needed to remove the rim, tire, and bearings before dropping them off. The shop is respectable and was recommended by a few friends.

The market for custom paint/motorcycle shops here in Jax is small. My question to you all is this. Is the price unreasonable for the amount of work on my end? I can take the wheels off no problem, have before. But not tire removal and pressing the bearings out. Going to cost I'd guess $25-50+ a wheel to have that work done TWICE. Removal then mounting and balancing.

Not too far out of line, I think mine were a little over that but they had to have the old powder coating taken off.

I think it's pretty much a given that most places will want you to have removed all unnecessary parts before you bring them in.

The 2 guys I use around here for powdercoating cost $80-100 for BOTH wheels. I have a tire machine and balancer, so do that as a side business for people instead of them having to take them to a dealer.

I think that is a competitive price for what I have seen for PC jobs, I paid a bit less but I dont live in Florida and I had both wheels done, a swing arm and all the other hanging parts off my 98 all at once. I saved money by doing that too. Most shops have a website and you can shop around for better prices but keep in mind local saves you money on shipping.

$200 for powdercoating rims is not unreasonable. And yeah, everything has gotta come off first, bearings, seals, tires, brakes, everything.

MAKE SURE THEY KNOW TO COMPLETELY MASK OFF THE ROTOR MOUNTING POINTS, AND BEARING HOUSINGS, AND REAR WHEEL INNER HUB FLANGE!!

Otherwise you're going to be in for a bit$h of a time trying to remove it before remounting your important parts.

I took the wheels off, removed the rotors, but didn't have to take the tires off or press out the bearings. $300 (tax included) to "un-bork" both front and back wheels, and powder coat them at the LA shop of these guys:

Decent work, but they could have done more wet sanding to remove the orange peel effect.

The PC hub and swing arm look amazing. Thanks for pointing out that making one trip can save money. I'd definitely like to get the hub, rear/front pegs done as well. I did some more researching and found a shop that will do them for $80 a wheel.

Yes. I was told that they plug all holes and mask everything that shouldn't have PC on it. That was a concern of mine and I definitely did not want to fight getting parts back in.

Not knowing what it takes to do this, I'd like to know why the bearings need to be removed instead of being taped?

Because after applying the dry powder, they bake the rims at ~400 degrees for like 30-40 minutes or so, and the grease liquifies and runs out of the bearings, all over the freshly powdercoated surface. Also it melts the bearing seals.

I paid about $150 for my rear wheel delivered without the tire or valve stem, local Sacramento shop.

I for one would only take it to someone that knows motorcycles. this means they know where to tape and plug holes, also a alum. wheel should not get hotter than 350 from my research. most standard powders do not flow untill 450 at which point they then bake off at 400.

If i could get someone that knows that to powder my wheels for $100 a wheel i would jump all over it. I have done a few wheels myself and the time it takes to prep 1 wheel is outa this world.

the rear wheel on a 94 vfr i just did took about 4 hrs to just get it preped to be powdered, then about 1hr to get it fully powdered
