From all i've read (including other topics from VFRD) there are a few differences between the '99 model and the '00 model. The strange thing is that I have a '00 VFR (I've checked the VIN serial number on the frame and it's a Y, so it's a 2000 model for sure) but i have all the characteristics of the '99 model: manual cold start (choke), the mirrors, no VFR logo on the tachometer, the 3 pin connector of the stator to the R/R (which has also 3 pins on the '00 model, but has different shape). Does anyone know something about this? Are there differences between the models for America and the ones for Europe (btw, mine is from Europe)?
I'm asking this because I also want to change my clutch and I don't know how many disks to order, the '99 has 8+1 and the '00 has 7+1. I guess, unless i disassemble the clutch to count them, i will have to order 8+1 to be sure.
Hi aand welcome to VFRD!
Does your bike have a CAT equipped exhaust? I'm guessing no if it has the chock lever.
Not familure with any Euro specs, but it sounds like a 98-99 US spec model.

Check your engine serial number and see if it has a "Y"
If so, you know what your clutch will be. As for the other things you listed, those are definetly 98-99 attributes. Maybe someone rebuilt the bike before you bought it and assembled it from two different years? Have you had it since new?
There's a European owner's manual in the downloads section if it helps.
Lucky you!....you have the "choke" control and don't have the stupid Wax Idle unit to get fouled up...wish mine had that lever! : )
I think this is fairly common on Hondas as they change from one model year/update to the next...."use up the parts in the bin til their gone" kind of thing. Honda bikes from the 70s seem to have alot of this when it comes to carb parts and such from one year to the next.
Along the same lines..... my yellow 2000 VFR doesn't have the HISS anti theft key....I was under the impression that all the 2000 onward bikes had that....not mine.
My formerly puke yellow 2000 now back to black does not have the HSS system. It does have a big decal on the frame that starts with the number 2000 in big #'s. and then lists the VIN #.
HISS never came on any 5th gens anywhere in north America, regardless of year. Euro/aus/jdm only.
HECS predated the yr 2000 catcon in north America on the 5 th gen though. Not sure if it was only 99 or 98 also. But we did not get the acronym in 2000, just the catcon and no name.
Interesting. Mine's a 2001, has no HISS, and had a label saying "HECS" on the side coveres (long since removed). It's supposedly a UK model, which is why it's one of only two I know of in the blue colour ('normal' ones here are yellow for that year).

I've seen a Euro 98-99 with a cat. But didn't have the crossed front headers.
Probably the VIN code mentioned is the answer.

Good to know. I must have been reading info from another market then.

Actually No US spec VFR has the HISS system except maybe the new 1200!
Thank you all. This was my first post on this forum, and i wasn't expecting so many prompt answers. Thanks again.
Now back to the topic, I will have to check the engine serial number and the CAT exhaust. For sure i do not have HISS. Unfortunately I will be able to do this only in a week or so, because I'm out of town right now, without my VFR :(
Regarding the exhaust, i think that it is CAT equipped (because where the 4 pipes meet i have a small "box" which i suppose is the CAT), but I'm not sure. Maybe you can please tell me how can i know for sure if it's CAT equipped or not.
